I did think about the possibility of unmarked wells/mines in the area, but came to the conclusion that there wouldn't have been many since I couldn't find it mentioned anywhere, until now. Since it has been said by a local, that means there must be at least a few in the area, is there any way to find out how many unmarked things there are? (The fact that they are unmarked makes me think that there isn't a way, but I am not very good at finding information that I am looking for, only for other people..)
