'As bad as it gets': Boy, 5, dies after brutal stabbing in Sydney home

A five-year-old boy has died after being stabbed during a domestic dispute at Carlingford, in Sydney's north-west, described by police as a "horrible, brutal crime".

Police said the boy lived with his father and grandmother at the house in Carlingford.

His father, 36, has been arrested and police are expected to lay charges.

After the boy was stabbed, the grandmother, aged in her 60s, took him to safety in a nearby street and called triple zero, police said.

Shades of Luke Batty.

Maybe shades of Cy Walsh, excepting HE was concerned about his own mental health and had sought help it seems.
Sad ....

The accused killer had visited a Sydney hospital last week concerned about his mental health only to be turned away and later allegedly murdered his son in bed, The Daily Telegraph reported.

In the last few months the father was treated at two different mental health units.

The 36-year-old mechanic by trade reportedly told police he thought his young son was 'the devil' when he allegedly attacked him after the five-year-old's mother left for work on Friday morning.

The 36-year-old, who recently took time off work, was turned away from a mental health facility because there were no beds, 9News reported.............

'There is a lot more to this,' the child's grandfather said.

When the father appeared through video link, he seemed confused, asking: 'Where am I?'.

I am nearly over these men killing their children and claiming mental illness. Maybe if they stay off the drugs, they could avoid that mental illness that causes them to think that little children are the devil.

Can't disagree with you Jen.

Just awful all around. My heart goes out to the poor child (rest in peace) and family. I hope justice is swift and measured. The statistics for male committed family violence in Australia are ridiculous.

Not just Australia. All over the world.

People can't just claim mental illness, it has to be diagnosed by a psychiatrist. Drugs are not always the cause of mental illness, it can also be difficult for people with mental illness to get the right type of medication and dosage, much is trial and error from what I've heard and observed. Is there any indication that illegal drugs were involved in this tragedy?

I agree.
Drugs are not always the cause, but often are used to self medicate. Not always.
Walsh had no drugs in his system when he thought his father the devil.

This family tried to get help for their son. They were turned away - no beds.
That is a bloody disgrace - no bloody beds.

Poor little fella. Thinking of the family what a difficult time for them.
imo

  • The heartbroken mother, also a nurse, said the system let her small family down
The wife of a man accused of stabbing his five-year-old son to death as he lay in his bed has declared she 'still loves' him despite the tragedy.........
The heartbroken mother said her husband of many years 'was a sick man' and was 'not himself', revealing she still loved him despite the charges he faces....

She said her son's father had tried to get medical help up to four times in the week leading up to the alleged stabbing, but was turned away or given more medicine.
On Wednesday, he reportedly tried to voluntarily check himself into the mental health ward at Hornsby Hospital but was turned away because there were no beds.
His wife hit out at the public health care system, questioning why her alleged requests for assistance dealing with his mental stability were rejected.
'There was no bed for my partner ... yet there's money for space in the hospital morgue for a five-year-old's body?' she said.

A nurse working at Hornsby Hospital claimed the father tried voluntarily checking himself in on the same day four people were stabbed at a birthday party in Asquith.
The hospital was under 'immense stress' as they were reportedly dealing with a separate stabbing incident two days before the fatal attack on the five-year-old boy.
'I can tell you that there were just no beds and no staff to care for him,' a mental health nurse at the hospital told the Hornsby Advocate..........

'He is a product of a broken system and we have to live with the pain for the rest of our lives,' the friend said.

She still loves him.......

"I still love my partner. He's a sick man, he's not himself right now, it's the drugs. We've been together for years. I need to be there to support him when no one has," the woman, who cannot be identified, told the Daily Telegraph.

The father first tried to get help at a mental health facility in Castle Hill but instead had his medication doubled, according to 9 News.

He then went to another facility in Hornsby and asked for help but was told there weren't any spare beds. On a third attempt, he returned to the same Castle Hill facility where he was again turned away and given more medication.

Finally, the day before he allegedly stabbed his son to death, the father was waiting on a mental health team to visit the family's home — but they never showed up.

Geez - don't know what to think.

I think that I am a bit too jaded from working in hospitals and doctor's surgeries for almost fifty years to give an objective opinion about these 'mentally ill' men who create havoc, mostly caused by their own choices.

I can tell you what went wrong with this father. He got into even low level drugs in his teen years. There is an age where young male brains are disturbed by even mj. I have seen lots of psychosis from very young men smoking, the otherwise harmless pot.

Do you have a source for your statement that what’s wrong with the 36 year old man is that he got into low level drugs as a teenager?

It's bloody awful he did seek help multiple times, and was turned away. Tragic all around. You can't just increase the dosage of psychotropic drugs in the hope it makes the problem go away? That's like Psyc 101.

I agree with bears10, do you have a source for this? I'm pretty sure when his wife says "it's the drugs" she means the medication that was given to him by the hospitals he saw. ie psych meds.

I am pretty sure that that is not what she means. Fifty years as an RN has given me some insight into this.
