Bombshell development after Audrey Griffin's body was discovered in a creek one month ago in Erina, NSW Central Coast

  • Triathlete's body recovered from a creek in March
  • Police initially declared death 'not suspicious'
  • Man, 53, arrested and charged on Monday
The partially-submerged body of Audrey Griffin, 19, was found in Erina Creek on the NSW Central Coast on March 24, a day after she was last seen leaving a nearby pub following a night out with friends.

Her death wasn't deemed as suspicious at the time as a preliminary autopsy had initially suggested that Ms Griffin had drowned.

Following further inquiries, police arrested a man, 53, in the inner-Sydney suburb of Surry Hills on Monday.

He was charged with murder and 11 unrelated domestic violence matters.

'Police will allege the man had a physical altercation with the victim,' a police statement read.

The man was refused bail to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday.

The breakthrough emerged just days after police released an image of a man they wished to speak to in relation to Ms Griffin's death.

RIP Audrey :(

Police are now seeking the public’s help to identify a man seen near the water where the popular teenager was found in a Central Coast creek on March 23.

Griffin’s body was found partially submerged in Erina Creek near The Entrance Rd in Erina about 3.45pm, the same day she was reported missing after a night out with friends.

“We are not implicating that this man was somehow involved in the incident, we have no indication of that”, said detective acting inspector Samantha Richards.

“We’re simply hoping he might have some information to help us piece together what has happened.”

Man charged with murder of 19yo Audrey Griffin who was found dead in Erina Creek

A 53-year-old man was arrested in Sydney's inner city on Monday and charged with Ms Griffin's murder, along with 11 unrelated domestic violence offences.

Police will allege Adrian Torrens had an altercation with Ms Griffin.

He spent the night behind bars and faced the Downing Centre Local Court today.

Mr Torrens did not apply for bail, which was formally refused.

Adrian Torrens, 53, charged with the alleged murder of much-loved 19-year-old ironwoman Audrey Griffin

Court documents obtained by 7NEWS.com.au reveal police will allege Griffin was murdered between 3am and 3.15am on March 23.

The alleged murder charge was adjourned to the same court on June 20.

Audrey Griffin, 19, was found dead in Erina Creek, on the NSW Central Coast, on the afternoon of March 24, after she had spent the previous night celebrating with friends at a Gosford pub.

She was preparing to begin a 10-week officer training course in April with the Royal Australian Navy and visited the Central Coast - where she grew up - to see her grandparents and invite her friends to a farewell party in Sydney the next weekend.

The teenager's mother, Kathleen Kirby, said the pair exchanged messages while she was in Gosford in which she told her she was proud of her and loved her very much.

She said her daughter was a fit, intelligent and beautiful young woman who 'had the world at her feet'.

Ms Kirby revealed to Daily Mail Australia she was already dealing with another painful family matter as her father was on his deathbed.
Ms Griffin had left the Gosford Hotel about 2am and walked towards her father's house after unsuccessfully trying to get an Uber.

Ms Kirby - who raised her daughter after she separated from Audrey's father - said she'd spoken to her friends while walking and told them she was trying to hail a taxi.

She said it appeared she took the longer route home along the water, rather than cutting through the centre of Gosford, because it would be easier find a cab

Paraphrased:

Adrian Torrens had a physical altercation with 19-year-old Audrey Griffin in which she screamed and attempted to fight him off leaving his DNA transferring to her fingernail.

Torrens then struck her on the left side of her face, which either knocked her unconscious and caused her to drown, or that he deliberately held her under water.

The case became a murder investigation only after witnesses recognised Torrens in the image.

Audrey's last known movements was Punt Bridge in Erina.

Audrey had sent two SnapChat videos to a friend, which showed her walking home and linked her location on SnapMaps – a live map where a user’s location can be seen in real time by contacts.

Audrey had earlier parted ways with her Ex boyfriend after having drinks with him & a friend at a pub & stated she was going to get an uber back to Terrigal

Audrey's phone pinged at 2.43am near Pateman Rd, Erina, where her body was later found.

Audrey was reported @ 3:45pm by friends after failing to be able to contact her the next morning

Her friend she was staying with went & who reported her missing, went to her last known location and discovered her handbag dumped in bushland

Police than found her & deemed she had drowned.

Audrey had a number of scratches to her upper arms and a mark to the left side of her face that could have been a blunt force injury, but no defensive injuries.

An unnamed witness who live near the border of Erina Creek told police about 3am on March 23 that she heard a high pitched scream which lasted about a minute, but dismissed it as a fox.

Torrens was arrested as he left a Surry Hills home, and charged with Ms Griffin’s murder and a number of domestic violence offences against his former partner.

Torrens is represented by high profile criminal lawyer Bashaar Elkheir from Cordoba Legal

Poor Audrey her last moments must have been terrifying

I'm surprised that the police just accepted Audrey's death as drowning ( there have been lots on SM for weeks saying that it was not )

I get the feeling that the police sometimes release an initial finding while they're still gathering evidence. Perhaps it's in order to avoid any possible suspects fleeing.

This particular suspect appears to have left the area on his on accord, although it's possible that he fled after his image was released.
It's great that he was IDed.

Absolutely devastating! It hits very close as this happened in my local area and I also have teenage children.

It’s so awful to read that a local resident heard screams but did not react as it was dismissed as a fox. I had not heard about this detail before.

The local community is very shaken by this murder, especially since it wasn’t picked up by the media for days and the police called it “not suspicious “ (to be fair, maybe it was strategic).

'Police will allege the man had a physical altercation with the victim,' a police statement read.
This is also causing a lot of upset and it’s unclear why this wording was used. An altercation implies both parties were involved and started fighting. She was going about her own business and was assaulted by this social outcast. He is also being charged with 11 counts of domestic violence (unrelated to the murder) and shouldn’t have been able to walk the streets freely.

There is something wrong with violence against women in Australia, it’s the 23rd death this year, with a woman dying as a result of criminal actions of a man against her.

According to this article, he is due to face court in May for the 11 unrelated domestic violence charges, accused of breaching apprehended violence order 10 times

I don’t think there will be a great deal of sympathy for his death, however I feel
It’s relevant to make a few points (that I would only bother making on this forum of generally learned people). This case is tragic for SO many reasons. Aside from the fact that a completely innocent young girl has lost her life, my heart also broke when I saw that the alleged perpetrator was an Aboriginal man.
First Nations (indigenous) peoples of Australia make up only 3.5-4% of the total population but are significantly overrepresented in Australian prisons (around 35%). Our country has an appealing history of Indigenous deaths in custody. Aboriginal people live 10 years less on average than the general population, largely due to significant disadvantages in respect to social determinants, systemic racism, and intergenerational trauma. In the article, the alleged murdered says he had been up for 4-5 days so most likely on meth.
Further, this man had committed many previous domestic violence offences and consistently breached court-ordered AVOs…I’ve also seen reference to him being charged for previous offences including theft and larceny. Why was he allowed to just cruise around in normal society after exhibited repeated criminal behaviour, and particularly menacing and harassing behaviour towards women?
This confluence of factors is an absolute travesty and an indictment on much broader societal issues.
I am in NO WAY excusing this man’s behaviour. He took an innocent young life and probably permanently ruined many others. The whole thing is just so awful
