Balaclava Rapist attacks

December 15, 1979: A 30-year-old Tugun woman is bundled into the boot of her car at gunpoint and driven to the Gold Coast Hinterland where she is raped.

December 25, 1979: The masked man ambushes a Cabarita couple in their parked car. The woman is indecently assaulted after the attacker restrains her partner’s hands by winding up the car windows.

December 28, 1979: A man and woman are bombarded at their isolated farmhouse at Cudgen. The woman, ordered to tape her partner’s hands, is raped while the man is forced to watch.

January 25, 1980: A married Burleigh Heads couple are confronted in their home. The woman is forced to bind her husband’s hands but says she is pregnant. The rapist relents and leaves.

February 2, 1980: The rapist targets Jeff Parkinson and his date at Tweed. The woman flees but Parkinson is shot dead.

October 31, 1980: A Gold Coast woman is threatened at gunpoint and raped in her Burleigh Waters unit. Her attacker, in a balaclava, flees on a motorbike.

-------------

Police believed he rode a motorcycle and was a factory worker or tradesman.

Described by victims as 177cm tall, between 20 and 27, of athletic build, with dark brown hair, bushy eyebrows and blue eyes, the man always hid his face with a balaclava.

Victims all reported a chemical smell on his clothing and said despite the disgraceful activity, he was a polite rapist who apologised to the women.

“All the victims described him exactly the same, he was well spoken with a soft voice,” he said. “But everything he did was the opposite. It was cold-blooded and evil.”

A special taskforce was set up at Tweed Heads but the Balaclava Killer would attack only once one more time before disappearing forever.

December 8, 1980: A police dummy displayed on the Gold Coast dressed as the Tweed Heads murderer and rapist the Balaclava Killer who was active between 1976 to early 1980s.

The lead investigator said he had no doubt the killer/rapist was in jail for other crimes, statistically could be true, but maybe, just wishful thinking, imo.
This perp would be in his earlier sixties today, still out there, waiting to be caught!

Looking back: Crimes that shocked Tweed

1. The Balaclava Killer

IT BEGAN with a string of rapes, more often than not committed while the victim's male companion watched in horror.

Then it escalated to murder. And not even a $50,000 reward could help police solve the mystery of the masked man who terrorised the Tweed and Gold Coast in 1979 and 1980.

The Balaclava Killer started his spree with a string of rapes before his violence turned to cold-blooded murder.
On December 25, 1979, the masked man ambushed a Cabarita couple in their parked car.
The woman was indecently assaulted after the attacker restrained her partner's hands by winding up the car windows.
Three days later, a man and woman were attacked at their isolated farmhouse at Cudgen.
The woman, ordered to tape her partner's hands, was raped while again the man was forced to watch.

On February 2, 1980, the rapist targeted Jeff Parkinson, 33, who had been to Twin Towns with his girlfriend to celebrate their new relationship.
About 1.30am, Parkinson opened the passenger door for his girlfriend when the rapist jumped into the backseat with a rifle and demanded they drive to a secluded location at Cobaki Creek.
But Parkinson fought back, pouncing on the armed man which allowed his partner to flee and flag down a passing car.
Parkinson was then gunned down by three shots and the murderer disappeared.
A further three women were also raped on the Gold Coast, with police believing the killer was either a tradie or factory worker.
Every victim reported a chemical smell on his clothing.
Despite mass investigations, strong leads and a solid reward for information, no one was ever charged.

February 3, 1980: Murder scene at Tweed Heads West. Detectives from Lismore and Sydney examine the car that was found beside the body of victim Jeffrey Parkinson. The suspect became known as the Balaclava Killer.

Its hard to analyze any case without all of the actual case info .

Especially rape cases, where you have to find out what exactly occurred between the offender and the victim, what was said, what was done, what did he expect of the victim, etc..

That being said , forcing the victims partner to watch the assault , speaks toward a specific type of offender, but you need the above details to really hone in on what type of rapist you are dealing with .

In 2000, the Australian Police Journal published an article on Coulston regarding the forthcoming creation of the National Criminal Investigation DNA Database(NCIDD) and that the Queensland Police Service and the New South Wales Police Force were seeking to recover DNA samples from the "Balaclava Killer" and the "Sutherland Rapist" cases to compare with Coulston's DNA.[4] Coulston shared the same rare blood type of group A secretor with the "Balaclava Killer" and the "Sutherland Rapist".[4]

Looks like those who do have access to the files might think they are into something too.

Was this individual ever identified ? and was a cause of death ever listed ?
So far not identified, but it would be good to rule out Julian Golding.
Also there was a post mortem but it did not give any “cause of death”.

You never rule out anything till its ruled out, then you go and check it again.

Ruling out something in investigative terms, just means its on the back burner.

I have to apologize, i rarely follow international cases, because the laws and procedures are so different
