A major investigation is underway after a body was found on a walking track in South Australia.

The grim discovery was made by a member of the public along the South Alma walking track, off Mount Alma Rd at Inman Valley, south of Adelaide, about 5.30pm on Friday.

SA Police say person whose body was found at Inman Valley was likely murdered

SA Police say initial investigations suggest a person whose body has been found in bushland south of Adelaide was murdered.

They have declared the death a major crime.

The body was discovered by a bushwalker who was looking at wildlife in the area at about 5:30pm on Friday.

Detective Inspector Andrew Macrae said the body was found down an embankment off the side of a track off Mount Alma Road at Inman Valley on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

He said initial investigations suggested the person was murdered and then left at the scene several years ago.

Inspector Macrae said forensic testing would be conducted in an attempt to determine the potential identity of the victim.

He said one of the lines of inquiry will include looking at a potential link to Operation Southern.

Local police, Major Crime detectives and forensics officers have attended the scene.

SA Police say person whose body was found at Inman Valley was likely murdered

Inspector Macrae said forensic testing would be conducted in an attempt to determine the potential identity of the victim.

"I'm confident it won't take too long … so I'm expecting that will hopefully take within a few days," he said.

The detective said one of the lines of inquiry would include looking at a potential link to Taskforce Southern — an investigation into the alleged southern suburbs drug-related murders of Trevor King, Robert Atkins and Jeff Mundy.

"Just because of the geography, it's one of the considerations we will be looking at," Inspector MacRae said.

Only one person has been charged over one of the murders — that of Mr Atkins.

Mr Mundy's body has never been found.

Police examine possible drug syndicate link after ‘decomposed’ body found in bushland in Inman Valley, South Australia

One line of inquiry will examine whether the case has any connection to Taskforce Southern, which is investigating the alleged drug‑related murders of Trevor King, Robert Atkins and Jeff Mundy in Adelaide’s southern suburbs.

Mundy was last seen in 2020 at Seaford, about 40km from Inman Valley where the decomposed body was found.

The remains of Atkins were found in 2023, in a well at an abandoned rural property in the state’s Mid North.

King was found dead in waters off West Lakes in January 2020.
