Carly McBride murder trial: Sayle Kenneth Newson intends to appeal against jury's guilty verdict

Newson's solicitor Mark Ramsland filed a notice of intention to appeal to the Court of Criminal Appeal on June 25, a day after Newson was found guilty by a jury of murdering Ms McBride at Muswellbrook on September 30, 2014.

The notice of intention to appeal is just the first step in the appeal process and must be filed within 28 days of the conviction.

Newson's lawyers do not yet have to specify the grounds of the appeal and have six months to file the actual appeal before the matter is listed for hearing in the Court of Criminal Appeal.

Carly McBride’s killer hospitalised after attack in Cessnock jail
Sayle Kenneth Newson, the man found guilty of murdering mother-of-two Carly McBride, has been attacked by other inmates in jail to apparently “avenge” the Aboriginal woman’s death.

Just four days after Sayle Kenneth Newson was found guilty of murdering mother-of-two Carly McBride — nearly seven years after she went missing — he was bashed by three men n the maximum security Shortland Correctional Centre in the Hunter Valley.

It is understood two of the men involved in the attack were Indigenous and the attack is thought to be retaliation.

Newson sustained a broken jaw and eye socket along with other extensive head and internal injuries, forcing the Muay Thai boxer to undergo surgery in hospital.

I have read the thread, I don't understand what you mean by reporting his reputation? Is it his reputation or lifestyle?

Fair enough on the personal side of things; I guess?! But, I didn't ask for his real name or address.

The media in this region of Australia, were absolutely flogging the narrative they were being provided by the NSW Police (this is no secret). I've followed this case for a very long time (amongst others), and the only media in Australia that came close to reporting both sides, was the ABC.

I've also lived in the Hunter Region and I'm Australian.

I guess I didn't realise that this thread was largely about discussing and commenting on media posts/articles, I thought it would be more than that.

Extreme force was used to extensively fracture her skull while another severe blow was delivered to her back using his fists, feet or a blunt force object, or a combination of all, the judge determined.

JAMES Anthony Cunneen, accused of assisting a mate cover up the killing of Carly McBride in 2014, not only denies helping dump the 31-year-old's body in bushland outside Scone and lying to police but disputes she was murdered, a jury has heard.

He outlined the issues in the trial and told the jury Mr Cunneen disputed claims he had any knowledge Ms McBride had been killed, assisted in dumping her body or provided a false alibi for Mr Newson.

He also disputed the prosecution case that he took backroads from Muswellbrook to Scone to avoid detection while dumping Ms McBride's body, that his friendship with Mr Newson extended to the point he would help him cover up a murder or that he did anything to "thwart" the police investigation.

THE jury deciding the fate of James Anthony Cunneen, who is accused of helping to dump the body of murdered mother Carly McBride in 2014, have begun deliberating over their verdict after nearly six weeks of evidence.

"I lost out big time," the text reads. "I gave everything I had to help someone to get out of a bad situation. He's a good mate but that's not why I did it. I did it because if the tables were turned I know that he would be the only person that I know that would do it for someone else in his position. It's hard to find genuine straight up people anymore around here."

District Court Judge Phillip Mahony told the jury on Tuesday the text message was only relevant if they decided that Mr Cunneen did in fact write it, and that he was admitting to some of what the crown alleges against him.
In Mr Cunneen's defence, barrister Robert Cavanagh said the text message had nothing to do with Ms McBride and was to do with money.
