I hope this leads to the closing this case and being able to give her family answers

We don't know what happened or why she left the trail. Suggesting she should have known better without knowing the relevant information is victim blaming.
This explains what happened

So, it's looking more likely to be some kind of accident/misadventure?

This is the latest Rob Parsons video with new evidence showing Celine’s phone was most likely dropped and lost by her just before it got dark and she’s had to choose between backtracking and looking for her phone, or using the last bit of daylight to try to find her way to the main track and her car. She’s chosen the latter and not made it out.
Thanks, that's an awfully long video - can you provide a time stamp or summary?

Answering my own question:

"...local legend Tony Hage found the phone after “more than 20 trips into the field [many of them solo]”. Tony located Celine’s mobile phone less than 100 metres from her last known GPS point,” Parsons wrote.

“This proves the theory that Celine lost her phone shortly after recording her final location and provides clear direction on the path she was heading.”

Other reports reveal how it was a matter of him glancing in the right direction at the right moment. When people are walking a difficult trail, they can't also maintain a 180 degree view of the ground under shrubs, etc.

I wish them luck in finding her remains.

Tasmania Police to formally join renewed search for missing Belgian tourist Celine Cremer

What's next?

Tasmania Police says it will now formally join the search, with trained search and rescue officers and SES volunteers on the ground when weather conditions allow the search to continue.

The search was postponed on Sunday because of bad weather, but Tasmania Police inspector Andrew Hanson said police search and rescue personnel and trained volunteers would be added when it resumed.

Police believe Ms Cremer left walking track, became lost

The working theory for police, he said, was that Ms Cremer had likely gone off track to take a straight line to the Philosopher Falls car park when it was getting dark.

"I know that sunset on that day was at 4:57pm and in winter in those weather conditions, and particularly in that canopy, it would have almost seemed like night-time had fallen at that 4 o'clock mark," he said.

"Our theory is that Celine has either accidentally veered from that track or has made a decision to follow a more direct route from her position back to the Philosopher Falls car park

He said a tracking app on her phone indicated the shortcut.

"She's reached a high point on a hill where the phone has spoken to the satellites and we're able to retrieve some data.

"That data stops at that point so our theory is Celine then continued on that pathway down the hill where the coverage wasn't as good … and it's our belief she's either lost or dropped her mobile phone, couldn't find it in the dark and has made a decision to continue on that straight line towards her car and unfortunately become lost."

Inspector Hanson said police would join but not lead the search, and that they would likely help search the line from where the phone was found back to the car park.

I hate headlines like this (but it’s the DM, so it’s to be expected)… Field searches are very difficult and it’s extremely easy to overlook something. A fingertip search in these kind of conditions is not feasible in the initial part of searching when there’s still hope for rescue or even quick recovery. Private search teams have been out there tens of times before they located the phone… so how exactly is it “embarrassing” for the police force?
Sorry, rant over.

I agree. Where I live, police rarely seach for missing people in the bush - they turn it over to search and rescue, because they're not trained for those conditions.

Of course, the British audience of the DM probably can't imagine a place like this trail. And, IMO, the DM will choose to try to enrage rather than educate, every time

Ms Cremer went missing from the north-west Tasmanian track more than two years ago.

Private investigator Ken Gamble has been leading the private search, and tells Leon Compton on Tasmania Mornings he believes her remains are close to where her phone was found on Saturday.

"So I'm very hopeful that today or tomorrow that we will locate her remains."

He explains how the search will work and which areas the team will focus on.

Celine Cremer search in Tasmanian bushland uncovers water bottle, garbage bag

Searchers have found a water bottle and a garbage bag that may have been used as a poncho in the Tasmanian bushland where Belgian tourist Celine Cremer went missing more than two years ago

Mr Gamble said the plan was to pause the search after today while police examined the phone and other items.

"We've done four full days of searching so my team is pretty exhausted," he said.

"It makes sense that we might postpone it until better weather."

Tasmania police has confirmed the items will be forensically tested.

A couple of questions about the water bottle and garbage bag that were found today:

1. I saw a comment on Facebook by a random person claiming that Celine’s backpack was found inside her car, suggesting she wouldn’t have taken many items with her on the walk. I can’t find any news source over the past 2+ years of reporting that confirms this claim. Does anyone know if this is true?

2. Rob Parsons posted on Facebook today that the brand of water bottle (Ossa) was sold at the restaurant Celine worked at (Lure Wine Bar). But from what I can tell, the restaurant she worked at was at Coles Bay on the East coast, a long way from this region where she disappeared. What are the chances she would be carrying a glass water bottle from her restaurant while travelling around Philosopher Falls? (It could still be hers though, perhaps she just bought it at a local shop.)

Any thoughts?

I think forensic testing of the water bottle and garbage bag will be crucial. I wonder if her DNA could possibly survive on these items for 2+ years?

It would make sense that even if you left most of your belongings in the car, you would still have taken your drink bottle with you.

Most backpackers bring a small fold-up daypack to take for a walk, to carry water, snack, etc.

A plastic bag strikes me as something you might carry in your small pack. But, if you were wearing it against wet, why would you take it off before you got back to your car?

Has it been specified the bottle was glass? At any rate, many concientous tourists try to avoid waste by refilling one bottle.

My concern is, if lost, she might have gone a long way off track, in no particular direction.
