One detail of his confession that seems odd is how he said he burnt her swimsuit. But she was said to exit the showerhouse naked, before he or whoever scooped her up in a towel and took her away. So how did he get her swimsuit? I guess it's possible that she carried it with her when she walked out naked, but is that likely?

WHY is this the first time the location described in the POI's alleged confession is being searched? Why hasn't it been searched over all these years?
The accused took police to the location on the corner of Brokers and Balgownie Road 15 months later, but it had undergone residential development and so he could not be certain. He could only describe walking through a tubular gate, cattle guard and a trail.

Police then interviewed the property owner who contradicted what the accused described about the land. Police wanted material evidence to back up the confession, and I assume that evidence would need to be compelling and consistent in order to acquire a search warrant.

It's such a shame that the accused was considered unreliable at the time (possibly due to his age and socio-economic status, no adult present), and those exact same factors are now why he cannot be put on trial today.

If Cheryl has been found, I'm hoping this will bring closure to her family.

Rick may start to finally heal.

The "area of interest" flagged in a volunteer-led search for the body of a British girl who vanished in Australia 55 years ago has turned out to be a false alarm, New South Wales Police said.

A volunteer team who used cadaver detection dogs in search of Cheryl Grimmer had hoped their finding would be a breakthrough in the case which has remained a mystery since she disappeared in 1970, when she was three.

But bones that were found in the area belong to an animal, police said in response to the BBC's queries, adding that the search had "concluded".
