Thousands of kilometres from Australia, Michael Grimmer has spent years reviewing the case of his cousin, Cheryl Grimmer, who disappeared in 1970.

"I got to become aware of who was in my family and my cousins in Australia," said the geneticist based in the United Kingdom.

"I came across this story about Cheryl. I realised she was the daughter of my uncle Vince.

"It was just horrific."
