Childhood cancer campaigner Erin Griffin has died in Adelaide, an hour after the start of Childhood Cancer Awareness month, Sept 1st. Her mother says she bravely hung on until it started.
'A 14-year-old girl who campaigned to raise awareness about childhood cancer has died after making history through her participation in a gene therapy trial.'
'Erin Griffin died at the Children's Hospital in Adelaide with her parents, brother and grandmother by her side.'
In 2013, Erin received a Children's Week Award for her advocacy work in raising childhood cancer awareness. She was born in Scotland but moved to Australia when she was six years old.
She was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an incurable brain cancer, on February 18, 2012 and was only the second child in the world to take part in the gene therapy trial at a Sydney hospital. Erin had travelled to the US, and UK to highlight childhood cancer. She even met with Congress.
'On Facebook, a spokesman for The Truth 365 documentary about childhood cancer said: "Her mum Amanda says she knew that Erin was holding on until September 1 because her mission in life was to spread international awareness of childhood cancer," he said.'
