September 05, 2013

THE judge who today set the trial date for Daniel Morcombe's accused killer has expressed concern at the role of social media in prejudicing the trial.
Brett Peter Cowan has been accused of kidnapping and murdering the Sunshine Coast teenager on December 7, 2003.

He will face trial from February 10, the Supreme Court has determined

The trial is expected to take six weeks.

Potential jurors could be questioned in an attempt to eliminate any who may be prejudiced by pre-trial publicity.

The strategy was used during jury selection in the trial of former Bundaberg surgeon Jayant Patel.

The barrister said he intended to submit evidence of pre-trial publicity to the court in relation to an application to have the trial stopped.

A STRANGER danger talk given by Daniel Morcombe's parents has helped a girl escape an alleged abductor and provide police with a detailed description that led to his arrest.

Bruce and Denise Morcombe, whose 13-year-old son was allegedly abducted and killed by Brett Peter Cowan in Queensland, gave a stranger danger talk at Rosebery Primary School two weeks ago in the Northern Territory.

10 years later, the life and death of Daniel Morcombe

December 06, 2013

DANIEL Morcombe, 13, went missing while waiting for a bus in 2003. It was almost eight years before his remains were found. Next year, a man will face trial charged with his murder.

In that time his name would become synonymous with the community's efforts to protect children from harm. This is how his story unfolded.

I can't believe it's been 10 years. I haven't kept up with the case since he was found, but I pray that he didn't suffer and that he died quickly. It's such a horrible thing to wish for someone, isn't it? But the alternative is so much worse.

I wish most of all that he was still here with his family.

I don't think he died swiftly. His mother wasn't fortified with the anger of a swift murder. IMO the charges were a long time in coming (thank you QPS and NSWPS),

From his funeral from the song by Elton Jon 'Daniel my Brother'.

Why do people do crazy stuff? It was not Daniels fault and I hope his Mum has peace.

I read this entire thread the other night and it made me sick to my stomach. Where's the humanity?! The capacity that humans have to do unspeakable things onto others......it just makes me feel all floppy and tingly. I just cant even imagine the sheer trauma the Morcombes continue to feel day in and day out knowing what happened to their son.

I just read his entire thread too. I remember seeing his picture years ago and thinking what an extremely handsome, sweet looking boy he was. It makes me weak in the knees to even think about what that poor child went through. My heart goes out to his parents.

I've just read the entire thread as well. I was aware of Daniel's case, having watched a documentary about it several years ago, but I didn't know his remains had been found and that anyone had been arrested.

Such a tragic tale, with all the "what if"s it throws up. I watch a lot of documentaries about plane crashes and they often comment on how it's always a chain of events rather than one factor which causes the crash, and I think many missing cases are the same.

BBM You too? I'm terrified of flying but have flown a lot, and so to further torture myself I always watch documentaries of plane crashes.

Yeah, it's like a weird fascination I have. I also hate flying and can't get on a plane without first having several valium to calm my nerves, yet I find myself drawn to Air Crash Investigation (I believe it's called Mayday in the US), Seconds From Disaster and other documentaries detailing the causes.

I thought understanding a bit more about it would help my phobia.. but really, it hasn't at all. Now I'm just certain that every unusual bit of mid-flight noise is a loose screw, or engine failure. (Maybe it's me that has the screw loose..)

Actually, another way in which plane crashes are similar to missing/abduction cases is that they often result in changes to the law or procedures to prevent a reccurence.

The trial is expected to draw massive public interest, with one court booked for the hearing and a second "overflow court'' to allow a live stream of proceedings

BRUCE and Denise Morcombe will relive the horror of their son Daniel's 2003 disappearance when they are called from a pool of more than 100 potential witnesses for a murder trial next month.

The Courier-Mail can reveal they are expected to be first to take the stand among dozens of forensic, DNA and other scientific *experts who were instrumental in locating the Sunshine Coast teen's remains in thick bushland adjacent to a macadamia farm in 2011.

I really hope that this trial gives Daniels family the answers they need after all these years. Every time i see his picture or that of his mum and dad it takes me back to when it first happened. It almost seems like yesterday but it isn't.
