Daniel Morcombe murder trial continues FEBRUARY 12, 2014 2:54PM

DNA from a bone found in Sunshine Coast bushland matched that of Daniel Morcombe’s mother and two brothers, a court has been told...
"...“The mitochondrial DNA profile from the bone sample was a hundred per cent matched to Denise Morcombe and to Denise’s other sons Dean and Bradley Morcombe but the mitochondrial sequence from the bone did not match Bruce Morcombe, the father of Daniel Morcombe,” Dr. Jeremy Austin, University of Adelaide researcher....

To the untrained eye they would have appeared no different to rocks buried in the dirt or branches sitting among the leaf litter.

But the small items found on the site of an old sand mine in the Sunshine Coast hinterland were of the upmost importance - these were the bones of missing schoolboy Daniel Morcombe.

On their hands and knees, shoulder to shoulder, State Emergency Service volunteers crawled through bushland searching for Daniel's remains.

Day four of the Daniel Morcombe trial is underway. We're hearing from DNA expert Catherine McGovern.

Kate Kyriacou ‏@KateKyriacou 6h
The partial profile "could have originated" from Daniel Morcombe, based on DNA she took from his toothbrush.

Kate Kyriacou ‏@KateKyriacou 6h
Dr McGovern was unable to get a DNA profile from one bone but got a partial profile from the other. #morcombe

Kate Kyriacou ‏@KateKyriacou 6h
Det is telling how he hid at the crime scene as Brett Cowan drove in with two undercover officers. They filmed as he was arrested. #morcombe

Kate Kyriacou ‏@KateKyriacou 6h
Sgt MacGregor used a "reference skeleton" at the scene to determine whether items found during the dig were human bones. #morcombe

Kate Kyriacou ‏@KateKyriacou 6h
Sgt MacGregor says the bones belonged to someone aged 9.5 to 14 years. They would have been about 127cm to 135cm tall. #morcombe

Kate Kyriacou ‏@KateKyriacou 6h
Sgt MacGregor said the bones had been "in the elements" for at least five years. #morcombe

Evidence given from many searchers who found various human bones.

Kate Kyriacou ‏@KateKyriacou 2h
Prof Olley also gave advice on how far items would have moved if they were thrown into Coochin Creek. #morcombe

Kate Kyriacou ‏@KateKyriacou 2h
Prof Olley was asked to advise police on the "likely redistribution of human remains as a result of flood activity". #morcombe

Kate Kyriacou ‏@KateKyriacou 2h
Next up is Jon Olley, Professor of Water Science and one of the many experts called to crime scene to provide police with advice. #morcombe

Police brought 3 bone segments to Mr Wood and asked him to determine whether they were human. He said they belonged to a child. #morcombe

Kate Kyriacou ‏@KateKyriacou 1h
Giving evidence now is Walter Wood, a retired forensic osteologist. A bone expert. #morcombe

Kate Kyriacou ‏@KateKyriacou 1h
Sen Const Huth took swabs from the inside of the white Pajero to attempt to find a DNA profile. None was found. #morcombe

Kate Kyriacou ‏@KateKyriacou 1h
Sen Const Ashley Huth, police officer and scientist, is telling the court about an examination he did on a Mitsubishi Pajero. #morcombe

Kate Kyriacou ‏@KateKyriacou 1h
Sen Const Huth performed similar tests on a mechanical mulcher. Nothing relevant was found. #morcombe

Kate Kyriacou ‏@KateKyriacou 1h
And that's day four finished. The Daniel Morcombe trial will resume on Monday.

It is a miracle they found any at all - IIRC that area had flooded badly.

More kudos to Qld police! Amazing efforts, almost heroic.

It's just incredible!

I'm not a religious person but I see the hand of God in this case.

To find those tiny fragments of bone after 8 years of floods and critters is no led than miraculous.

The Morcombes themselves say they knew Daniel was deceased when his Christening candle kept going out - three were lit (one for each son) and Daniels would extinguish itself every time they lit it.

So incredibly sad.

There is an excellent doco on this case, I can't link on this tablet but if you look for "Tears for Daniel" on YouTube you will find it.

There is something extraordinary about Daniel and his family.

The entire country is emotionally involved.

Beware - tissues required. :(

All those folks in orange are from the SES (State Emergency Service) and they are trained volunteers.

Unpaid and unselfish folks who fight fires for the rest of us, and now they've found Daniel.

This case, Daniel's...is the first I follow here at WS.
Discussion and opinion here is minimal. Idk why, exactly.
I have revisited the thread (esp. the coronial inquest) to refresh my thinking of things...and better position myself as if sitting as a juror...absorbing testimony and evidence.
I have lots of questions. :floorlaugh:
Just a few here...with failed Google attempts for answers...
Wth? Why is there NO Sex Offender Registry in Australia?
Wth? Why is it Cowan's sketched trial images of his wicked eyes are obscured?
http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/que...murder-trial-the-exhibits-20140214-32q5f.html
Why are Daniel's school shoes of importance in the exhibits of evidence?

Daniel Morcombe murder trial day five rolling coverage
IT IS day five of the trial of Brett Peter Cowan, 44, who stands accused of the murder of Sunshine Coast teenager Daniel Morcombe.
Within this article lies the importance of Daniel's school shoes.
10.20am: The 34th witness in the trial is podiatrist Paul Bennett, who studies the science, motions and movements of the human foot.

He said he was asked to conduct a comparison analysis on three pairs of shoes by police in Queensland in August 2011.

``Effectively the kinds of comparisons you are looking for are consistencies in the way footwear might wear out,’’ he said.

He said he looked for wear patterns to form a picture of how an individual would move.

Dr Bennett said he examined a right Globe-brand skate shoe.

``Effectively using the Bata reference grid it would belong to a person roughly 12 to 15, possibly older,’’ he said.

He said he also examined a left Globe-brand skate shoe.

Dr Bennett said he was also provided with a pair of black school shoes and brown size 7 skate shoes as a reference point.

He said the wear patterns and an ``asymmetrical finding’’ were consistent across all the shoes.

``There are locations with inside the footwear that correlate with the mechanism that has caused this particular set of wear patterns,’’ he said.

He said the shoes matched.
