Brett Peter Cowan guilty of murder of Daniel Morcombe
SARAH ELKS THE AUSTRALIAN MARCH 13, 2014 2:19PM

MORE than a decade after Daniel Morcombe vanished, Brett Peter Cowan has been found guilty of the schoolboy’s murder.

The six-man, six-woman jury took less than eight hours to find the 44-year-old, who is also known as Shaddo N-unyah Hunter, guilty beyond reasonable doubt of murder, indecent dealing with a child, and interfering with a corpse...

The true extent of Cowan's shocking criminal history can now be revealed, and one of his convictions has a striking similarity to Daniel's case.

The second youngest of four brothers, Cowan had a relatively normal upbringing, despite being bullied at school.

By the time he was 18, he had preyed on up to 30 children.

Many of them were targeted at a local swimming pool in fleeting encounters in order to avoid detection.

His first conviction for child sexual offences was for an attack on a seven-year-old boy in Queensland in 1987.

Daniel Morcombe trial: What the jury wasn’t told about Brett Cowan

HE twice went to jail for snatch and rape attacks on young boys, lost count of how many other children he’d abused and carried out violent and depraved sexual fantasies on the women he dated.

This was the side of predator Brett Peter Cowan the jury deciding his fate could not be told.

The Courier-Mail can now reveal Cowan’s sadistic past, including that he began abusing children from the age of nine and once told police he’d been sexually active since the age of eight.

BRETT COWAN GUILTY OF MURDERING DANIEL MORCOMBE

The 44-year-old former tow truck driver and father-of-three was today convicted of Australia’s highest profile child abduction case when a jury found him guilty of murdering Sunshine Coast teenager Daniel Morcombe.

Brett Peter Cowan abducted and killed Daniel Morcombe. He had a history of deviant behaviour and had been jailed twice for abusing children Source: Supplied
The 13-year-old vanished while waiting for a bus under the Kiel Mountain Rd overpass near Woombye on December 7, 2003.

Cowan was arrested eight years later following a sophisticated undercover sting that ended with him leading them to Daniel’s remains.

It can now be revealed that Cowan:

TOOK a seven-year-old boy from a playgroup and molested him in a toilet block, putting his hands around the boy’s throat when the distraught child threatened to tell his mother;

LEFT a second child, aged six, with horrific and life-threatening injuries after raping him in Darwin;

ADMITTED to abusing up to 30 children while a child himself by luring them into the change rooms of a local swimming pool;

SEXUALLY assaulted children in the lead-up to Daniel’s disappearance in a series of incidents not reported to police;

FORCED a girlfriend into a bizarre and violent kidnap and rape role play years after killing Daniel; and

SUBJECTED partners to violent sex acts, including repeatedly choking one into unconsciousness.

I'd we can't house these crims BUILD MORE GAOLS!

I'm thinking of Tom Maher and Jill Maher's parents right now.

Unnecessary deaths of innocent people because our justice system Can't get it right!

DO SOMETHING NOW TO KEEP THEM AWAY FROM OUR INNOCENT CITIZENS.

What a sickening individual he is. So glad he is now removed from society away from our streets and our kids.

In my opinion I believe he acted alone and that jackway was not involved. The blue car as reported by witnesses was irrelevant to this crime. If I am wrong I really hope they both turn on each other in prison and jackway gets the appropriate punishment he deserves for his role in Daniel's abduction.

Around dusk on a Thursday night in September 1993, Brett Cowan, then aged 24, approached the boy and asked him if he wanted to go for a walk to see an old car wreck abandoned in the bush not so far away

About an hour later, the boy, naked and filthy now, stumbled through the dark back into the BP Palms service area. Northern Territory Supreme Court documents reveal he was dazed and distressed.

In intensive care at Royal Darwin Hospital the extent of his injuries became apparent
