Judge Atkinson has allowed a camera to be in the courtroom for the Cowan sentencing. No word as to when sentencing will be. #Morcombe

Kate Kyriacou ‏@KateKyriacou 6m
@MolksTVTalk No she hasn't. She will hear that application this morning.

M*O*L*K ‏@MolksTVTalk 4m
@KateKyriacou My apologies - I thought I heard a reporter say that the application had been heard/approved.

M*O*L*K ‏@MolksTVTalk 26s
It seems the application to have a camera in court is still to be heard (I thought I heard it had been heard and approved(!)). #Morcombe

Thank you for posting this video Marly.

Every WSer should watch it - it's such a lucid example of what good liars these guys are. Cowan is being interviewed for a tv show, discussing his life, and he is absolutely charming. He's clean, clean-cut, attractive and Mr Nice. That is SO alarming to watch!!!

Equally alarming to me is that it is the judge who ultimately decides whether the odds are high that a sex offender will reoffend. Judges aren't trained in mental health. I know they receive the psych reports to help them decide - but the judge in his Darwin case decided to give him the "benefit of the doubt". What the hell??!!

Because he was willing to undergo a Sex Offender Treatment programme. Those programmes are BS in my opinion. Just look at the recidivism rate. Of course he'd be willing to do it - he's a liar and would have lied his way through treatment, as they all do.

Very alarming in all ways!!!:scared:

Beautifully said!! Agree wholeheartedly, Isis!
BBM - judges seem ignorant of the recidivism rates - or they choose the rights on a perpetrator over potential future victims. I find this abhorrent. There needs to be more done to make judges, particularly those responsible for bail applications and parole hearings, accountable.

Hi and many thanks to you Isisrising for taking the time to provide such an informative and detailed reply. I already believed these monsters could not be re-habilitated and your explanation backs this up. It is hard to understand why some people who are abused and suffering because of it go on to do the same to another person. I wonder if Cowan would still be sexually attracted to children if he he had not been abused himself. Obviously the fact Cowan was abused does not excuse what he has done to Daniel and other children and I hope the judge does not take any pity on him because of this.

Hi :seeya: I just want to say that treating sex offenders is not my specialty - my experience is with the victims of paedophiles.

I am now in private practice with adults, but the bulk of my work prior to this was with children and adolescents in the welfare sector. I did not have one client who hadn't been sexually abused, unfortunately

I just wanted to clarify that. Everything I've stated is MOO. A psychologist who actually works with sex offenders may have a far more sympathetic opinion toward them......

I just looked up some studies regarding Sex Offender Treatment Programme efficacy and there are a lot of grey areas in the data due to small sample sizes and - in what I see as a major flaw - the fact that they only count recidivism as occurring if the abuser formally re-enters the criminal justice system. So all of those paedophiles reoffending without getting caught are not counted in the recidivism rates! Dodgy IMO. But even with that flaw, the recidivism rates are not promising.

These guys are cunning. And so many victims are loathe to come forward. But it's impossible to measure those re-offenders who don't get caught again, obviously :banghead:

Hi gregjrichards :seeya:

It is indeed a complex situation with these people. Basically, if someone is sexually abusing children there is a high probability that they have been sexually abused themselves. The often target children who are the age they were when the abuse started - but this is not always the case.

Cowan seems to be very indiscriminate with his targets - he has abused a child as young as 4, one MSM report stated, and then he's gone for Daniel who is a young teen. That is more unusual - as is the fact that he does not try to form emotional relationships with them - there is no grooming phase. He just snatches them for one-off encounters. One of the psych reports for Cowan comments on that.

In terms of the relationships with women - I don't know as I haven't assessed him. I assume that his primary sexual attraction is to male children. But he is able to have sex with adult women - I assume that is in order to fulfil his daily sexual needs. He sounds like an individual who is driven by his sexual drive IMO. And as the MSM reports are showing, his sexual relationships with the women were warped. It wouldn't surprise me if he was fantasising about children whilst having sex with women....(sorry, I know that's graphic ).

It's really hard to fathom, I know. He's acting compulsively out of a deep pathology, basically. JMO

I think I read something last night that suggested Cowan liked to 'relive' his deviance with his adult female partner/s? I think the sexual relations with women were less about intimacy and more about a physical outlet for his sexual frustration, as well as an opportunity to engage in fantasies about what he had already done to young boys, and what he maybe wished to do to other young boys. Makes me sick thinking about it. His partners are victims here too - imagine knowing you had been intimate with a man like that. Horrifying.

Oh, I know  For a woman to be attracted to a man like him, all has not been well in her childhood.

I feel for them - you're right Strangeworld. They are his victims too - deeply wounded women who subconsciously seek out an abusive partner to reinforce their low opinion of themselves. I really think they shouldn't have published his wife's photo. Deeply unfair to her.
