The Morcombes recalled the chilling moment they knew in their gut that they had seen their son’s murderer.

Mr Morcombe said it was during the 2011 inquest sittings in Brisbane when P7 appeared to give evidence.

“When he (Cowan) walked into the inquest on April 1, we knew … It was bizarre. He had not said a word, but we knew it was him. I think everyone in the room did. We just knew he’s a done deal.’’

Mr Morcombe said Cowan had stood out because of his “disgraceful history’’.

When I first saw the photo of Cowan I was amazed at how ordinary he looked. Did anyone see the interview with him from 1999 where he claimed to be a reformed Christian man? The interview was conducted on the streets of Brisbane a few years after he had been released from prison. You could say he was a good-looking man. Totally deceptive appearance in that he seemed to be so charming and almost charismatic on the outside, with a quite endearing smile to boot. So disturbing to realise the sickness he had hid behind the facade. Of course, I feel very guilty for thinking this, but I still feel as though it's important to address how deceptive appearances can be. It also doesn't change the fact that he's an absolutely inhuman predator.

Yes, I saw that interview. It's such a prime example of the façade that a paedophile can have.

They don't typically look like the 'dirty old man' in a raincoat - they are all sorts of people. Whilst Cowan obviously wasn't, they are often 'respectable' people in responsible positions such as teachers, music teachers, sports teachers....anything with access to children.

And in my experience, they are often very engaging - particularly with children. They use that charm to groom and lure children. And that's partly why it's all so confusing for the victim - the person seems 'nice' or 'trustworthy' and is often 'likeable'.

That interview is such an important document IMO. You can see what a convincing liar he is.

And don't feel bad for thinking he's attractive!! In that interview he is!! The drug ravaged face evidently kicked in a bit later. He's well fed in the interview, so his face is fuller. Also, people seem to be able to do all sorts of things to their bodies without signs of it on the face until they hit their forties, I've noticed. Then it shows up. JMO.

The information in that article about Cowan's past is SO alarming. What becomes clear, is that he is completely indiscriminate in terms of his sexual partners - he abuses girls, boys, has sex with adult women and THEN is going to toilet blocks to have sex with adult men!!:facepalm:

He is seriously deranged. He's just a total sexual deviant who is led by his ****!!! :scared:

There's no way he would have just stopped offending IMO when he's been doing it since he was a child. He would be totally addicted to it..........and he'd hardly have some crisis of conscience - because he doesn't have a conscience :facepalm:

I agree about BC's appearance in the old video footage (that was from an SBS programme called Vox Pop or something like that - the roving interviewer was very skilled at getting people to talk about themselves). BC was engaging and good looking - he was so earnest about how his life had been turned around! I think we also have to remember it was dated 1999, and very few of us look the same as we did back then. That the soft, fullness of youth gradually fades (unless you are tubby like me, but even so it kind of "drops" into jowls and bags!) All beside the point I know, as no doubt his appearance has been changed by years of drug use and smoking.

I watched the recent 7:30 Report segment linked earlier, featuring recordings from the undercover operation that was BC's undoing (well done Australian police!) and was struck by how desperate he was to be accepted by this supposed gang of crooks. I know it was probably hugely about him wanting the pay offs they were promising, but he himself mentioned something about the mateship and feeling of belonging that they offered. Probably all still part of his ability to act in a way that furthers his own agenda, but it also smacks of a certain neediness.
I don't believe for a minute that BC's version of Daniel's death is quite accurate. I think it was a sanitised version because he wouldn't have wanted to admit the horrible truth to those supposed tough guys. IMO his history shows how violent and heartless he could be in those circumstances, and I think he knew that after so long, evidence to prove what actually happened would be long gone.

It's a bit concerning that the police have now had their whole plan exposed to the public in how they went about getting his confession as I think this might compromise them next time.
I am so pleased it is over and that we never see this happen again but I have a sneaking suspicion that he has done this many more times than we will ever know about.

You're right on the money there. It was a pathetic need to be accepted into some sort of underbelly which probably appealed to Cowan what with his sick and depraved interests. Even his own aunt said that he was "internally a boy, inside a man's body, desperate for acceptance and attention". What kind of acceptance did he want?! He must have a totally different concept of it, because very few people accept or respect criminals. The only attention he got was plain notoriety.

Having said this, I don't sympathise with his actions at all, I think the guy is just an awful person, but members of the general public who jabber on about their detailed wishes for a violent end for Cowan are simply no good. Instead, let Cowan suffer by sitting in prison for the rest of his life, reflecting on what a failure he has become and what damage he has caused not only the Morcombe's, but his own family: his mother, his father, his three brothers, his ex wife and their three boys. Death is such an easy, quick way out and it should not be applicable for Cowan. I'd like to hear from Cowan's family. Perhaps this Sunday's 60 Minutes special will feature an interview with them. I already know that his ex girlfriend is being interviewed.

I know.:facepalm: I don't believe that he didn't kill between the 7 year old boy and Daniel. He left that boy for dead!! It's such an awful thought though. But yes, I hope LE are looking at every missing child case in all of those places he lived over the years.

[Cowan's 1987 crime against the 5 year old boy was a violent sexual assault and attempted murder]... Cowan served just 14 months of a two-year sentence".

Five years later, Cowan was once again before the courts for an even worse *attack on a six-year-old boy in Darwin in 1993..."The evidence against Cowan in the 1993 Darwin case was more compelling, with his young victim&#8217;s injuries revealing an assault much worse than what he *confessed to"...Justice Mildren acknowledged Cowan&#8217;s &#8220;ability to lie&#8221; ...(Psychologist) Mr Mals queried whether Cowan was genuinely remorseful"...More serious charges, including attempted murder, were dropped before the case went to court".
The violence of Cowan's sex attacks escalated each offence.

Can you believe this Judgement? IMO it is this 'culture within the judiciary' which Hetty Johnston, Bravehearts, is trying to educate. Thankfully, 25 years on, we are more enlightened about the devastating impact of sexual assault.
