Stabbed detective John Breda facing a new enemy after Maroubra pub incident
The Sydney Morning Herald

January 29 2018 - 6:25PM

‘Critically injured detective John Breda briefly opened his eyes, smiled and squeezed his wife's hand on Monday before being placed back under heavy sedation as infection becomes the decorated investigator's new enemy.

As the mental state of his attacker Nick Newman, himself shot dead by two police officers after the attack in the Maroubra pub on Friday, was being placed under the microscope, family and friends of Detective Sergeant Breda were becoming "cautiously optimistic" about his condition.

After receiving dozens of blood transfusions and undergoing several lengthy operations, Detective Sergeant Breda remained in a serious but stable condition with surgeons so concerned about infection they placed the officer back under heavy sedation, intubating him to assist in his slow recovery.

Police sources also reported how Detective Sergeant Breda remained conscious after being stabbed to help guide two pubgoers to keep pressure on his wounds as they waited for paramedics.

"If it wasn't for their actions in keeping that pressure, and the fact the paramedics got there so quickly, we would be looking at an entirely different story," the source said.‘

JANUARY 30, 2018 2:02pm

‘The NSW senior detective critically injured by an accused sex offender in Sydney pub on Australia Day is talking and ready for rehab, says the state's top cop.

"It was a great relief for me as commissioner to talk to John," Police Commissioner Mick Fuller said outside St Vincent's Hospital on Tuesday afternoon after checking in on Detective Sergeant John Breda.’

‘"Some four days ago he was stabbed and in a critical condition and thanks to John's fitness, John's tenacity, thanks to the hospital staff - the doctors, the nurses - John is talking and preparing for his rehab session this afternoon," said Mr Fuller.

"John, as humble as ever, asked me to thank all those who have put out their thoughts and prayers for John and his family, which is indicative of the sort of guy that John is.

"I'm sure people across NSW and Australia will be pleased to hear the progress John has made in such a short amount of time."’

NSW cops roll up sleeves for injured Breda
news.com.au/AAP
Greta Stonehouse
JANUARY 31, 2018 12:16pm

‘As NSW senior police detective John Breda recovers in a Sydney hospital from a violent Australia Day stabbing, his police colleagues have rolled up their sleeves as part of a new blood drive campaign.

The senior detective was taken to St Vincent's Hospital on Friday afternoon in a critical condition where he underwent emergency surgery and needed up to 30 blood transfusions.’

‘On Wednesday, members of the NSW Police Force and the NSW Police Association donated blood in Sydney as part of Bleed4Blue, a new campaign to highlight the need for blood donations following last week's incident.

Acting Commissioner Dave Hudson challenged each state in Australia to get on board during February.

"We are already part of an annual emergency services blood challenge and we thought this would be a great way to remind people about the importance of donating blood," Acting Commissioner Hudson said in a statement.’

‘In Australia, roughly nine million Australians are eligible to give blood, but only about 500,000 actively donate.

With one in three Australians needing blood some time in their life, the Blood Service is looking for an extra 2000 blood donors from New South Wales.’

Saving Detective Breda: surgery team who brought officer back from death
The Sydney Morning Herald
By Lucy Cormack
24 March 2018 — 1:09 pm

‘Injury designed to kill

“It was an injury designed to kill,” Dr Granger said of the wound inflicted with a 15-centimetre combat blade.

“It had gone through the side of him, through the kidney, through the liver, through his diaphragm and up into his lungs. The entire blade had been inserted to the hilt.”

An average adult male of Detective Sergeant Breda’s stature has five to six litres of blood circulating in his body. Over the course of the next six hours, the 45-year-old would lose his entire blood count three times; sending up to 15 litres of blood gurgling down the drain.

Ask any of the doctors present that day how many people helped save the life of Detective Sergeant Breda and they will struggle to give the exact number.

There were the paramedics who were first to reach him at the pub and brought him to St Vincent’s emergency department.

There was the department’s public holiday skeleton staff who stabilised and transferred him to the operating theatre, while he remained conscious, in just under 20 minutes.

All this was before the arrival of four surgeons, two anaesthetists, their nurses and registrars, the hospital’s blood bank and the haematology department.

There also were the breathless porters who ran units of blood to the theatre in a desperate effort to keep pace with the rapid blood loss.’
