Yet another person missing whilst bushwalking and with little media coverage and few details... This time Tasmania...

As the search for a missing Launceston bushwalker wraps up today, Tasmania Police is calling for two people to come forward to potentially shed light on the case.

The search for 66 year old Bruce Fairfax in the Duckhole Lake Track area at Strathblane is continuing, but has been significantly scaled down and will likely be formally suspended later today.

I know this is not about Dr John Foster and I can't seem to find any updates about him, but this is the latest article about Bruce Fairfax still lost but not forgotten... it's a touching tribute... his wife and family left a note and a tent up for him just on the off chance he does return...

The wife of missing bushwalker Bruce Fairfax has posted a heartfelt goodbye and recalled their last trek together, as friends and colleagues of the former teacher share their memories of him.

Louise Fairfax, an avid bushwalker, was with 66 year old Mr Fairfax on the day he failed to meet up with her after they set out on the 2 kilometre trail to Duckhole Lake, near Strathblane, in Tasmania's south on Saturday October 14.

I know..... sad... and so quiet, lonely and he seems almost forgotten amid the throng of everyday life...

This is the last news link I can find about John Foster and I don't see it posted here so... dated 19th October...


Mrs Forster is anxious for answers amid fears her husband, a keen walker, may have become disoriented in the bush.

“It’s the not knowing that’s the hardest part,” she said.

There has been no sign of Prof Forster and, without witnesses or footage of him behind the wheel of his car, police are only assuming it was he who drove it to the park.

Mrs Forster said she had not been to the reservoir with her husband in the past and he was not known to be familiar with the area.

“The lack of CCTV is problematic in that we don’t even know that he was driving the vehicle,” she said.

“We’ve got so little information to go on.”

I know. I've seen nothing for weeks from media. Uni still lists him on faculty. No Facebook search page from family, either. Strange!

Maybe they uncovered something after the search? That is one of the maddening things about these cases. I get invested in the people and their families, I get intrigued by the "vanished into plain air" angle, I get plain curious (ok, nosy) about the secrets/psychological aspects/family dynamics, and then I don't hear another word about them, especially if they are found safe and sound. Of course, I am thrilled for them, but at the same time I can't stand not knowing WHY they disappeared. I need a different hobby, probably! Anyway, I do hope he is found, either way.

I don’t believe so, and so tragic. Also terrible reflection on media and ourselves, that hardly any press beyond the first few days of search. Others disappear at the hands of others and their loss is devastating. When bushwalkers / runners disappear it is not felt so dramatically. (!?) But a loss is a loss and a death is a death. As a runner and bushwalker, ha and academic, I really empathise with this disappearance. Slipped of a cliff, broken a leg, snakebite, all out of range are potential killers for anyone. Given he was a fit and savvy chap, more of a mystery. Really hope the family has news one day soon, for closure.

What happened to this man? Has the family posted anything on social media for the past two years? Did the police do an inquiry? I'm surprised that no one from his university seems to have made any comment or that the university newspaper didn't do an article. My dad is an older professor who walks, so, for some reason, I check back on this case...sad!

Was the lake ever searched? It’s a reasonable sized lake, with a very deep dam wall area. I’ve been to the area quite often.
There’s a rough track that goes towards the back of Eltham but apart from that a lot of it has fences being old Melb Water grounds, and there isn’t really a link to other large parks or forests, it’s surrounded by farmland and open scrub
