Lin family killings: trauma so severe police thought gun had been used, Robert Xie trial hears

May 15, 2014 - 5:42PM

Two police officers who responded to a triple-0 call at the Lin family home have described how they discovered the five severely traumatised bodies surrounded by blood spatter.

Sergeant Lachlan Kirby told the NSW Supreme Court that the injuries to the victims’ faces were so extensive that "I thought a shotgun had been used".

Giving evidence in the murder trial of Lian Bin "Robert" Xie on Thursday, Sergeant Kirby recalled how upon his arrival at the North Epping home, Kathy Lin told him, "I think my brother is dead inside".

Dog barked for hours: neighbour

The court also heard evidence from neighbour Tracey Jones, who woke up on the night the Lins were allegedly murdered to attend to her daughter.

Ms Jones said she got up at midnight and again at 3am.

She said she heard a dog barking a lot that night and thought it was unusual.

"It was like incessant constant barking... It went on for hours," she said.

The witness said she also heard a "loud" vehicle with what may have been a "faulty muffler" drive away from the area at great speed some time during the night.

"I was woken when our outside sensor light was triggered," Mrs Stephens said in her statement.
"A couple of seconds later I heard Asian voices whispering. It was ... as if the light had scared and worried them.
"I heard the footsteps quickening ... I didn't get out of bed to see who the people were."

I'm new to this thread as I'm pretty much on the Oscar Pistorius threads every minute of the day and night. This is such a shocking crime and really creeps me out because this happened just several houses away from my parents' home in Boundary Road, North Epping. Min Lin had served my Mum and Dad in his newsagency on an almost daily basis and they were so distraught when it happened. They've passed away now so I'm so glad they won't get to read of the horrors that took place there. It's bad enough that the adults were killed in such a way, but the two children????? How can any normal person do a thing like that. It defies belief.

Min Lin’s father tells court there was no tension at family dinner on eve of brutal North Epping murders

May 20, 2014

ON the night before the brutal Lin family murders, several of the relatives shared a “nice and normal” meal with the man accused of bashing them to death only hours later.

The jury in the Supreme Court murder trial of Robert Xie has today heard evidence from his father-in-law, Yan Fei Lin, the dad of Xie's wife Kathy and slain newsagent Min Lin.

Mr Lin Sr recalled his last conversation with his grandson Henry was while he fixed a pair of the 12-year-old's favourite sneakers.

I don't even want to give her a skerrick of attention  but.....I wouldn't be surprised if she's there to keep up her public profile, lest we all forget about her now that the trial of her own murderous swine guy is over.

She knows this is a huge public trial - and I bet you when asked she'll say it's because she's writing a screenplay.....like she announced at the Git's trial. Yeah sure......:floorlaugh:

Whatever the reason, it's totally weird :scared:

Not to mention she'll ask for a good fee for giving a further interview.

Case against Xie driven by a 'ruthless' criminal, court hears

As Witness A informed on Xie, during some 200 conversations with police, he began to understand what they "needed" and "wanted".
Not one of the conversations regarding buying a hammer, the sedation of his wife or his alleged motivation ("loss of face"), were recorded.

"At the end of the day the police case, it will be submitted ... was being run by Witness A. He fills in the gaps."

This is a huge number of conversations to have with the police. It's extremely common for prisoners to become police informants, obviously with a view to having their sentences reduced. However, it can be extremely dangerous for them to become one. It's equally common for them to lie and the police know this only too well. I have to point out that informants are hated by fellow criminals, particularly those that are serving time, so everything is done to keep this fact a secret. They can literally be putting their lives on the line by helping the police.

The fact that in this case there some 200 conversations speaks [read shouts] volumes. It's irrelevant that A has been in and out prison and may be a known liar. The police would have started investigating every piece of information he passed on and it would have become apparent very quickly if he was talking rubbish. As the investigation took some two years, they were obviously learning a lot from Witness A.

I'm uncertain as to why Witness A wasn't fitted with a body wire so I can only surmise that whatever information he was passing on was of an extremely useful nature from the outset. If they've had adjacent cells for some time, they could have very casual conversations without A seeming to pump Xie for information and make him suspicious.

It's always useful for the prosecution to have a motive but it isn't essential. Forensics can be huge.

Two hours!!! To think anyone should have to suffer with such dreadful injuries for that long just makes me feel sick, and very, very angry.

I thought Xie testified that he sedated his wife. If so, how could she have rung 000 and said "Someone is going to die". Do we know what time the call to 000 was made and what time the police arrived? This sounds strange to me. Maybe I've missed something. I note Xie's wife hasn't been charged with anything.

MONTHS after the five Lin family members were murdered in their Sydney home, their accused killer Robert Xie allegedly told his father-in-law: "I hate you all to death".

"Robert was really angry, jumped up and shouted 'Why do you think there are two families now. I hate you all to death'," Mr Lin recalled.

In this argument, Mr Lin said Xie "got really angry" and questioned why he would not give any of the inheritance to his wife and Mr Lin's daughter Kathy.
At this point, Mr Lin said he and his wife Feng Qing Zhu reacted, saying: "We are not dead yet. How can you fight over the assets with us".

So, after the murder of the Lin family, Robert Xei's plan was to take over the news agency. Good motive.

Also, after the murder of the Lin family, the surviving 15-year old daughter, who was out of the country at the time of the murders, went to live with Robert Xei. She now supports his innocence. His interest in the daughter...Another good motive?
