Australia - Gas explosion rocks Ravenshoe cafe after crash, many hurt

An out-of-control utility vehicle has crashed into the Serves You Right cafe in Ravenshoe, Queensland causing a massive gas explosion from stored canisters. 20 victims have been airlifted, many with critical burns including two firefighters, the driver and elderly cafe patrons.

60-year-old driver Brian Scutt, who is a kidney transplant recipient, is one of the critical and is in an induced coma. His son James has said it was 'clearly an accident'. CCTV footage of patrons fleeing the cafe before the explosion has been released. It's thought Scutt may have had 'a medical episode'.

Three people are in induced comas. All the victims have burns and one of the critical is the cafe owners' daughter. They had just left for a European holiday and are on their way back now, I guess.

The cafe had been packed, mostly with pensioners having lunch with firefighters who had just given them a fire safety lesson.

Witness Edgar Grigg said people ran from the cafe on fire.

Sadly, the cafe manager Nicole Nyholt has died from her injuries. Her parents and daughter managed to get back from their holiday in Europe, in time to be with her. Her son and husband were also at her bedside.

Seven people remain in critical condition with burns.
