Australia Australia - Isla Bell,19, Brunswick, Victoria, 4 Oct 2024 *arrest*

From the previous article posted by StarryVeck:

A brief of evidence submitted to the court alleges Isla Bell was bashed to death in Marat Ganiev's apartment and her body was moved around Melbourne in a fridge.

I am speechless, and yes thank God they caught him just in time if all this is true

This article has a very thorough rundown of how they all converged, based on court documents. Her body ended up in a Dandenong tip after being placed in a residential bin by an unaware stranger :( It's just devastating, as someone familiar with all these suburbs it's really hitting close to home. What can I say but these men are utter pieces of trash and should be completely removed from civilised society for good.
Ye gods, they set in motion her body being carted from one side of Melbourne to the other. Middle aged men. What the?????? From St Kilda, Bentleigh East, Mulgrave, to Clayton, to Dandenong... madness , madness..

There is a lot of ground being covered in this murder, .. one from St Kilda east, one from Mulgrave, one from Hampton and the victim from Brunswick, and her body winds up in Dandenong.. 50 klms away.. it's not just the strange gap in the ages of the alleged killers and their victim, but the disparate distances ... how did they all wind up together?? what was this 19yr old doing with these middle aged men?? what connection did they have to each other? since none of them seem to have any connection to Dandenong, how did her body wind up there?

Mulgrave is right next to Dandenong, likely that...gentleman...frequented Dandenong a lot as it is a hub for the area. I am a local and despite not living in Dandenong spend a lot of time there for various reasons: delicious food, incredible market, Dandenong Show, huge library.

Still.. it's a long way from Brunswick.

These men were not the sharpest knives in the drawer.. Again, CCTV drops one bloke right in it,

The final hours of missing teen Isla Bell’s life have been captured on CCTV from the Melbourne apartment building of her alleged killer, according to court documents.

The documents released on Wednesday afternoon detail how the 19-year-old allegedly ended up at Marat Ganiev’s St Kilda East apartment on October 7.'''''

Good work by VICPOL, just as one was on his merry way back to Sofia, to disappear into the wilds, where, oddly, the murder rate is low, in comparison to other EU countries..

Not only Isla's final hours but also her murder according to this article from the ABC.

As a local I kept up to date with comments on her missing person posts on FB. From my understanding, her family knew who she was with, they made no mention of his name to the public due to concerns for her safety and also to protect her reputation had she been found alive. IMO poor Isla has fallen victim to exploitation from this older man and his associate, likely drug and sex related.

Logically, as a tenant of these apartments, you would think he would know what those things up on the eaves were, that they were CCTV cameras, probably activity activated.. but no. He stands in front of a camera and assaults her.

'''Ganiev’s building was surrounded by a CCTV system that covered the front door and window of the apartment, according to a Victoria police summary. Bell was seen entering the apartment for the last time on 5 October and was never seen to leave again, according to police.''''

I'm finding it quite sad the media attention this case is now getting and feeling bad for Islas family. I saw her missing posters around my town for a long time before I could create a post here with a msm attachment. Although it now seems she was already gone before the alarm was raised. IMO it must be hard to see the attention now when they were so desperately trying to get face out there and trying to find her with very little media attention then. Sorry hope this makes sense my brain is done functioning for the day

You make perfect sense. I have also been following this case after seeing social media posts about a month ago, and was pretty shocked by how little MSM attention it was getting, especially compared to some other cases. Now her poor family have to deal with not only learning the horrific details of what happened to her, but having that information splashed everywhere (sometimes with disgusting headlines) and most likely the defence teams will be dragging Isla's name through the mud. She was a beautiful, caring 19-year-old with her whole life ahead of her, and I hope they know that so many people will be holding her in their hearts.

How is this man not a flight risk?????

ETA: "Lawrence said it was a serious example of the charge of assisting an offender, which could attract a maximum jail term of 20 years, but acknowledged any trial would be at least a year away. He noted Yaffe had prior convictions for committing an indictable offence while on bail, and failing to appear but had the strong support of his adult son."

Despicable. Absolutely despicable.

Unbelievable. A suspect with an extensive criminal history, including violent crimes, with money and means to escape overseas, is given bail. How many times do magistrates have to let this country down?? Do women's lives mean so little??

I don't fancy myself a "lock em up and throw away the key" type, but I was truly shocked by the granting of bail in this case. Seems I was not the only one!

Interesting points (according to me lol) from the article:
  • Police will allege CCTV recorded a fight through a gap in Ganiev’s apartment window about 12.43am on 7 October and he was then accused of cleaning the apartment.
  • Yaffe, who works as a residential cleaner, allegedly arrived at the apartment on 9 October in a RAV4 towing a black fridge on a trailer and helped Ganiev move the fridge to the back of the apartment.
  • It is alleged CCTV captured Yaffe and Ganiev removing an old fridge containing Bell’s remains from the apartment and that it was wrapped in plastic and placed on a trailer attached to the RAV4 on 17 October.
  • Yaffe is accused of moving and cleaning the fridge, with aerosols and other products, and disposing of a bag of items belonging to Bell.
If that last part is true, he definitely knew what he was doing.

Agreed. As a Victorian and Australian I’m shocked and disheartened that this case hasn’t captured more widespread attention (I live in Sydney and very little media here).
I can only hope that VICPOL is working quietly behind the scenes to bring people to justice and I desperately hope that some political action can shine light on such pathetic bail laws. My heart breaks for Isla’s family. Her life was worth more than this.

Key paragraph:
Magistrate Rohan Lawrence released Mr Yaffe back into the community despite police fears Mr Yaffe was a danger to public safety, could interfere with prosecution witnesses or evade authorities either by fleeing the country or assuming a false identity. The decision sparked enormous public backlash, with thousands of men and women across Melbourne and Australia demanding his bail be revoked to keep the community safe. A petition, signed by more than 2200 people, states “the safety and wellbeing of the community, particularly vulnerable individuals, should be prioritised over the presumption of innocence in cases of extreme violence”. “Allowing someone accused of such a horrific crime to remain free, even with monitoring, is not only inappropriate but sends the wrong message about the importance of justice and victim rights,” the petition states. “We call for the legal system to demonstrate unwavering commitment to ensuring that those accused of such grave crimes are held accountable, and that justice is served for Isla Bell and her family.” Mia McDowall, who signed the petition, wrote: “I’m scared for my safety and that of all Melbourne women and horrified that the justice system allowed him to be bailed in the first place.” “Women should be allowed to feel safe,” wrote fellow signatory Britt Henderson.
