A forensic expert is sifting through a two-metre-long "pit" discovered during the excavation of a site that is trying to establish whether the Beaumont children were buried there after they vanished in 1966.

This article in The Advertiser says they were excited because the pit appeared to be filled with different coloured sand, as if it had been dug up then refilled.
But later today they realised that the sand was different coloured because of a stormwater pipe that had been installed, rather than someone replacing sand in a hole.

I wish they could, for sure, find the original hole! This is just so hard for everyone, hoping and hoping and hoping that they can find the children. I think I have had my fingers crossed all week.

How many different people have come out now claiming they saw the children after their abduction? I just can't follow who is who, claiming what now. Does anyone have a firm grasp on the claims and can summarize?

As far as I know, there are 4 people that have claimed to have seen the children after their abduction (by another person). One scenario is correct. MOO

...plus a 5th person with no relation to abductor.
There were other alleged sightings in the afternoon and evening.

1. Haydn Phipps (suspect: Harry Phipps)

"Haydn, who was aged 15 at the time of the disappearance, came forward to researchers in 2007 with the claim that he had seen the children in his father's yard on 26 January"

2, 3 & 4. Allan McIntyre (potential involvement) and his children, Andrew and Ruth (suspect: Anthony Munro)

"Mr McIntyre (Andrew) claims there was sand and blood in Munro's car on the day the children disappeared and believes his dad helped dispose of their bodies."
"Max McIntyre, a former Telecom worker, was investigated over the disappearance after one of his daughters, Ruth Collins, made the allegations back in 2007 but police found no evidence he was involved"

"McIntyre's children said that they and their father initially mistook Arnna's body for that of a boy because of her short haircut"

5. Miss Daphne Gregory
"About two-and-a-half hours later (2:45pm) another witness, Miss Daphne Gregory, sighted the children with the man, who she observed carrying an airline bag similar to one owned by Jane"

there was aanother witness that said she had seen the kids being led into a disused house but she came forward 6 months after the event so the police didn't take her seriously

Just to add to what @Bats has posted, a few days ago The Advertiser (local media) outlined the 6 theories about the children's disappearance.

(briefly paraphrased)

Abduction and murder: Harry Phipps - key suspect, multiple reasons for suspecting him (as we have been discussing), hence the digs at his old Castalloy factory site

Abduction and murder: Bevan Spencer von Einem - convicted child murderer, suspect in the disappearance of Kirste Gordon and Joanne Ratcliffe from Adelaide Oval in August 1973, and the Beaumont children. Video of person looking like him emerged (he was 20 at the time) avidly watching the police search a drain for the Beaumont children the day after they disappeared, a witness "Mr B" implicated von Einem in the children's disappearance

Abduction and murder: Arthur Stanley Brown - perceived resemblance to man seen playing with the children, he also looked similar to descriptions of the man who walked off with Kirste Gordon and Joanne Ratcliffe, he allegedly raped and murdered two girls 7 & 5 years old in 1970 (hung jury) in Queensland

Abduction and murder: James Ryan O’Neill - convicted child murderer, currently incarcerated in Tasmania, potential connections to multiple child murders including the Beaumont children. He himself mentioned the Beaumont children in a police interview (claimed innocence) and had visited South Australia about 15 times around the time of the children's disappearance.

Abduction and murder: Derek Ernest Percy - convicted child killer (now deceased), prime suspect in a number of unsolved cases including a 3 year old killed in Sydney (1968) and a 6 year old killed in Canberra (1966). Was at Glenelg beach on Australia Day 1966.

Abduction and murder: Alan Anthony Munro: (who Bats had mentioned), convicted pedophile, pleaded guilty to 10 child sex offences against Andrew McIntyre and another boy, Andrew gave a signed police statement saying his own father (Max) and Munro abducted and killed the Beaumont children. Police have found no evidence.

Percy admitted to the police that he was there that day. (as per my linked article)

how old would Percy have been at the time

About 17 years old. Died in 2013 at age 64. (as per the article)
He apparently had a series of handwritten diaries and clippings detailing the rape, torture and murder of children.

Apologies if this has been posted before. The link below is quite a good article explaining the claims made by Ruth Collins and Andrew McIntyre about 'Tony' Munro and their father's ('Max' McIntyre) involvement in the deaths of the three Beaumont children.

Coincidentally, both Ruth Collins and Haydn Phipps each made separate claims about each of their repective father's involvement in the deaths of the three children in the same year - 2007.

Does anyone know if this is just a coincidence or if there was perhaps a particular reason?

It was fifty years since the disappearance. There were probably a bunch of articles and news spots about it.

I think it was actually 41 years. The 3 Beaumont children went missing in 1966. I take your point though, there may have been some articles etc.

has there been any attempt to search McIntyres property

I don't think so. There are recent comments from Rachel Vaughan (one of the two police informers), after Cosi's offer to finance a dig at Stansbury, that this is finally going to happen.

imo

with phips wehae one person's word but with munro we have the word of 2 people plus a criminal conviction to back it up so to me he looks far more promising

Adding some additional context, on January 26 1966, in Adelaide (Glenelg being a suburb of Adelaide) the temperature reached 38.8 degrees Celsius (101.84 degrees Fahrenheit). An absolute scorcher.
It was the height of the tourist season, (with Glenelg being one of the most popular summer tourist locations in South Australia) and during school holidays.

"Sightings" of the Beaumont at Colley Reserve, Glenelg were reported. These sightings were reported by observers IIRC, who did not know the children. Colley Reserve is an area of 10,000 square metres (ie 1 hectare). There would have been literally thousands of people squeezed into that small area on that day.
There was also a sighting of the Beaumont children reported by a staff member at Wenzel's Bakery, a stone's throw away. She stated that she served Jane Beaumont, who had used a 20-pound note to pay for purchases. Wenzel's was (and is) a small, but very popular bakery at Glenelg. Employees would have been very busy serving a store full of people seeking refreshments, and calculating prices and change due without the benefit of today's digital technology.

IMO I don't think it can be concluded that any of these sightings were definitely of the Beaumont children.
IIRC the only person who KNEW the Beaumont children, and reported sighting them on that day was the bus-driver who knew them as frequent passengers. Initially he reported that, whilst driving the Somerton Park-Glenelg route, he had observed them walking back towards Somerton Park from Glenelg in the afternoon of that day. When queried on that detail, he stated that he may have been mistaken about the time of day, but was absolutely certain that he did see the Beaumont children (whom he knew well enough to have a chat as they boarded buses which he drove).
