After spending the better part of 10 years and tens of thousands of dollars out of his own pocket investigating Janine Vaughan’s murder, Dennis Mead is convinced he knows who killed her — and nothing short of a courtroom acquittal will convince him otherwise.

The retiree had no knowledge of the case — nor any connection to the Vaughan family — for years after she vanished following a late night out with friends in the quiet country town of Bathurst in the NSW central tablelands in early December 2001.

It was only after a terminally ill friend named Les mentioned her baffling disappearance and his misgivings about the police investigation that Mead turned sleuth.

THE TWO women tormented her for more than a year, terrorising her with mysterious phone calls and drive-bys. She even claims her house was shot at and vandalised with eggs and that cow manure was dumped in her yard.

All three women had a relationship with the same local policeman, yet when he became a murder suspect and the target of a major police inquiry, the campaign of harassment was uncovered in a covert surveillance operation.

Young, a civilian police employee involved in a ''very casual … but an intimate relationship'' with Mr Hosemans, provided him with an alibi for the night Ms Vaughan disappeared. So when the PIC was monitoring her phone for six months in 2006, it got more than it had bargained for. Once, after Cuneo had left Bathurst, Young texted her: ''Hi went past the advocate quickly no blondie''.

Days later Cuneo inquired: ''Who'd know all secret service! any blondie … sightings?'' Later she encouraged Young to phone Ms Walker ''just to stir her'', while in another text-message she wrote: ''I'll be doing everything to sabotage that [Ms Walker's new] job! … Pay back blondie.''

Ms Walker changed jobs to work in another town and still feels as if someone is constantly watching her. ''It has left me fearful of my safety, and emotionally and mentally affected.''

I think I got a bit upset so took awhile off from reading but back now.

I think we should just discuss what we've read or what we've heard like we do usually.

This article is about another women who worked at the Metro, Hayley Stewart. She was targeted by a stalker a year before Janine disappeared .

She had finished a "graveyard" shift , and Mal & Trevor ( the owners of the Metro ) would often shout them a drink after shift.

This night , Hayley walked to her home a few minutes away & entered the back door ( unlocked ) & left again shortly after via her front door to go to a friends place ( this was just before sunrise ) . A man had followed her home & entered her house. Her flatmate was home asleep when the man went into her room asking her " Where's your mate from the tavern? Where's she hiding because I just saw walk in the back door" He than went on smother her with a pillow to sexually assault the flat mate. She told him she was " on her period ". “He just kind of backed off and ended up just walking out the door,” Hayley says.

Years after Janine disappeared Hayley was contacted by the homicide police investigating Janine's case.

A female bartender was tracked to her home by a violent stalker before he sexually assaulted her housemate in a crime police fear may be linked to Janine Vaughan’s abduction and murder.

Hayley Stewart was 21 and working behind the bar of Bathurst’s notorious Metro Tavern when she was targeted by the anonymous stalker, just a year before Janine vanished outside the venue after a night on the town with friends in December 2001.

Yes it does make it hard to discuss.

But I do understand the reason they have made it a subscription. They have been working on this for over 18 months. Must cost alot of $'s

Some of the articles have been not behind a paywall, while others are.
I agree re them wanting and needing to recoup their costs, especially with less people buying the physical newspapers.
A lot of news outlets would have gone bust by now, I think, if they hadn't turned to subscription only.

I'm just hoping that some who might know something will finally come forward.
I stayed up late last night listening to the second episode Stalkers.

There are over 200 more people following The Night Driver on the Podbean site. Imagine if you added up all the podcast sites. There is huge interest in the case.

I assume all the Australian articles are subscriber only too??

Something that made me cringe every time Hedley said the name of the town Gulgong.
As a long time resident of the Central West area, no one including any of the local newsreaders have ever pronounced Gulgong the way Hedley did.
It's meant to rhyme with Gull.

The funniest /bizzaar pronunciation I have come across Goonoo Goonoo (near Tamworth).

Pronounced 'Gun- E-Gan -oooh'!!
