Australia Australia - Janine Vaughan, 31, Bathurst, NSW, 7 Dec 2001

Re Episode 8. Interestingly in the 2009 inquest LB gave evidence that "the car had a pink tinge, maybe some sort of special colour". Is there a photo of AJ's Renault from the time .... I've seen a photo of one they say was similar and it looked like a solid red colour, does anyone know? There have also been a few descriptions saying the car that Janine got into was a salmon pink colour.

Just having a bit of look around the archived material on Trove, came across this .... hadn't heard it reported like this before.
Janine's last minutes before she vanished from Bathurst
  • MINUTES after telling friends she was going to buy more alcohol, Janine Vaughan vanished.
The Bathurst shop assistant's last known moments were yesterday revealed on CCTV footage from the Metro Tavern nightclub, where she partied on December 7, 2001.

After leaving the Bathurst club at 3.47am, the 31-year-old told her two friends: "I've gotta go. I'm getting more drink. Gotta go to the Ox(ley Hotel)."

That would have been the Oxford Tavern, or The Ox. The Ox,being short for The Oxford Tavern.
There has never been an Oxley, Pub, Hotel or Tavern here, in Bathurst.

Thanks Tootsie. Just the way it's reported, it sounds like someone was going to drive her to pick up some alcohol, by herself. Before I had thought she was going to continue on to the tavern with her friends. I found that article pretty interesting in that respect.

That was a good find, Itsapuzzle! I don't remember hearing what her last words were. Apart from her wanting her friend to get off the phone.
Sorry I wasn't being picky to you, sorry if it seemed that way.
Trove often gets some words wrong. Though it is am amazing collection to have.
If she just wanted to get some alcohol, why didn't she just get it from The Metro Tavern. Also the Oxford Tavern wasn't a bottle shop and would have similar to what the Metro had anyway.
I had thought the plan was they were just going to the Oxford, and have drinks there. Who knows, maybe The Oxford stayed open a bit longer, I'm not sure.

I found some unknown to me photos of my grandmother as a passenger on a ship, on Trove. I looked up the ship and it was a very interesting story in itself through the life of the ship. I think the ship was a cargo one that took a few passengers. Seemed sort of like some of those old romantic movies set in the south seas.

It did look like Janine wanted her friend off the phone and got tired of waiting and seeing it was raining took up the offer of a lift.
I wish someone would just own up to what they did!

No worries, didn't think you were being picky at all, all good :) Just seeing it reported this way, it puts a whole different spin on it, to me anyway. The "I gave him my number" at the door, now sounds like it's the fellow who's going to give her a lift to get some more alcohol. The Metro was closing, that's why they were leaving. After reading that, it really sounds like it was someone who was in the hotel. Yes, Trove is great, I especially like the archived websites, that's where I picked this one up. How wonderful to have found those photos what a gem of a find!!! It's a great site.

They were heading to The Ox for "staffie's " drinks apparently ( they had also been their earlier in the night ) .

Don't think she ever said anything about getting more drinks thou

  • #348
Not sure what "staffies" drinks are or were. Is that for staff who worked there or did they have their own little party.

I googled the term and it is free drinks for staff who work there. I learned something new today.

I still haven't had a chance to listen to Episode 6, The Pharmacist yet.
Had to go out and still catching up on other stuff.
How dare life get in the way of what you really want to do!

So, no-one knows who Janine gave her phone number to. I find that odd. She would have given him her first name only, no doubt, and the number. He obviously never rang back because the police would have traced the call and got back to him. That's my theory now, that she got in the car with this fellow who was at one of the hotels that night, which would explain why he never rang her number.
MMOO .... my mad opinion only.
PS: I wish they would release some more CCTV footage.

There weren't a lot of CCTV cameras around the businesses in Bathurst back then.
. It was quite rare for any businesses to have them at all. So rare that as recently as 10 years ago, it was a novelty and you had people joking around, waving to the cameras. I know I did lol.

It's only in the last maybe 5 years that a lot more businesses are getting them.
It seemed for a very long time that the businesses thought that the local council should provide and pay for the CCTV.
There was some thing the council had going, maybe 10, 15 years ago where they would go halves in the cost of the cameras but even then most businesses didn't want to spend the money.

PS: I wish they would release some more CCTV footage.

i have seen the buying more drinks comment in an article before too, not sure if it’s the same one. I’ll try to find it.

I like your theory. She could have seen the guy she gave her number to getting in the red car as she was leaving the Tav. The car drove past just as it started to pour (according to Strop’s account), so she could have decided to get out of the rain, buy more drinks, go home with this guy, get a lift to her house or to the Ox. It is strange that the person she gave her number to has never come forward, that we know of, and said that he was the one she was talking about.

A man, who recently spoke with the family of murdered Bathurst woman Janine Vaughan about her disappearance, on Monday found a human jaw bone on the banks of a local creek while walking with his son.

The human remains were discovered near the historic Bridge Hotel in the village of Perthville, about 15 minutes south of Bathurst, in the NSW central tablelands about 2pm.

After picking up the bone, the local resident took it to his mother, a nurse, who identified it as a human jaw and he drove it in to police and made a statement.

Bathurst Mayor Bobby Bourke told The Australian, which has been reinvestigating Janine’s unsolved murder, that all work on a levee being constructed on the banks of Queen Charlotte Creek in Perthville had been halted as a result of the discovery.

“I’ve been advised … that a member of the public has identified at the Perthville levee construction site what may be a human jaw bone. Details of where it came from and how it came to be on the site are unknown. NSW police have commenced an investigation with council staff and contractors assisting as required.”

I can't find anything about the finding of any bones recently in the Western Advocate.

Oh wow. Trying not to get my hopes up but it could possibly bring closure for Janine’s family, Jessica Small’s family or Andrew Russell’s family. I wonder how long testing will take?

Agree, very strange they never came forward or rang Janine's number. It does seem like a logical explanation. Sorry, I forgot to add the news link for the Tim Vollmer article, so adding it now. Would be interested to see any other articles you may have seen it in, Loxoli, for sure. I wonder if there was a way out of the hotel via the back where there were no cameras, otherwise there should be footage of everyone going up and down those stairs where we see Janine leaving.

Weird I can't find anything about any other bones found at Perthville either by googling or by searching the Western Advocate, apart from the ones in 2011, that turned out to be historical.
But the podcast quote is from our current Mayor so it does seem current news ?

I think the article said they were found on Monday, so I’m thinking Hedley may have got the inside scoop. I’m sure other media will follow if it turns out to be significant.

Just weird that a find like that wouldn't go directly in the local newspaper like they usually do.
