Australia Australia - Janine Vaughan, 31, Bathurst, NSW, 7 Dec 2001

Spontaneous thought. Janine's bag had her phone in it, apparently. Do we know if Janine asked someone to ring it while they were in the Metro, to follow the ring-tone? If they did that, and they didn't hear phone ring, that would be a sign that the bag had been moved, and returned later. Be interesting to know if that was done. End of spontaneous random thought.

I have a real problem with BH's deceptive alibi.
We all make mistakes. However police officer's are fact driven people. Receipts are critical information.
I can accept that sometimes credit card transactions go through later than occurrence.
But in this case the bank statement is trying to bring it forward a day. Simply impossible.

It really does create a big problem to his credibility for me.

wanted to add to above but missed the deadline!

I can see why the commission was hanging onto that sticky point.

But beyond that what a bumbling mess.

The investigation into the investigation was sloppier than what they were investigating.

good lord New south Welshmen..... keep your noses clean people....:confused:

The Night Driver podcast: ‘Bathurst closed ranks against us’, says John Tate

When John Tate first arrived in the historic gold rush town of Bathurst tasked with solving the scandal-riddled mystery surrounding the abduction and almost certain murder of Janine Vaughan, he found the most perplexing part of the investigation was that no one would talk to him.

The former detective inspector had been sent in, with a dedicated team of Sydney homicide investigators, in October 2006 to reinvestigate the 31-year-old’s death and mop up the damage caused by an earlier NSW police strike force, known as Toko.

Weekend Australian 10th October 2020

The Night Driver: What became of Janine Vaughan?

NoCookies | The Australian

"In the case of Janine Vaughan’s mysterious abduction and almost certain murder, those numbers are staggering. Three police strike forces — Toko, Mountbatten, Toko II — with dedicated teams of up to 12 detectives working on the investigation over multiple years, tumbling into decades, along with one coronial inquest and one Police Integrity Commission inquiry.

Lists of almost 200 suspects constructed, dissected and then resurrected; logs of more than 23,000 red cars reviewed and whittled down by a process of elimination to just five potential vehicles used in Janine’s disappearance; and a $1m reward offered up early last year for information leading to a conviction for the person who killed her"

Not sure why I was able to read the whole article but it's behind a paywall when I posted the link.

Just read this article:
NoCookies | The Australian

H'mm, I had totally misunderstood Lynette's reference to the car number-plate being painted over. I had thought she meant the letters had been painted over to create different letters and numbers, as in changing a T to an I, etc .... and yet this article seems to be saying the number-plate itself was painted over, but the rain was washing it off and revealing the numbers underneath. So, that's pretty interesting, unless I'm misunderstanding?
"Something about the car’s number plate also stood out to her. It looked as though the registration number had been painted over and the attempt to conceal it was now being washed away by the pre-dawn deluge."

Oh do you think she meant painted it over in a solid block of colour? I also thought she meant painting fake numbers on.
I totally missed that too, until your post.

Could what seemed to be the numbers appearing and seeming to vanish and paint falling down be just an optical illusion from the rain and the street lights on a dark wet night.

What made me think of it was remembering when I was expecting a delivery, it was raining and a van had stopped out the front. The signage on the side kept disappearing and appearing as the rain flowed over it.
And this was in the daytime.

Mal Pollard has posted a detailed transcript on the official Facebook page of the audio and footage from the cctv cameras at the Tav. I’d like to post it here. How can I find out if that’s allowed?

I guess ask a moderator
I don't think there are any online right now. They show up the top on the right hand side.

That's interesting Tootsie, could have been an illusion caused by the rain, for sure, good point.

On another topic, was just having a look at the contents of Janine's handbag, and noticed there's no keys there, h'mm, thought they were in bag. But thinking about it, she wouldn't need her car keys or shop keys, she maybe just had a single house key in her pocket, or in a wallet/purse she was using to buy drinks. So, she probably would have been able to get back into her house. Unless, of course, someone pinched her keys from the bag. MOO
Sorry, article behind a paywall.

So she didn't have her phone on her, it was in the bag.

Makes sense that she could have had a small purse with her with money for drinks and her keys.
It's also possible she kept some notes in her bra and maybe the keys too.
Or maybe she didn't bring her keys and just hid them under a rock or somewhere at home.

It's something I would never do, but you see it all the time in tv shows and movies. The key hiding I mean.

Was just reading through this article, h'mm, it mentions the keys were found, so maybe the photos of the handbag contents in The Australian article didn't show everything that was in it.
NoCookies | The Australian

"Greg worked at the Metro Tavern at the time of Janine’s disappearance. Janine’s handbag had gone missing at the bar in the early hours of December 7, 2001, and with it her ID, mobile phone and house keys, along with the keys to the clothing store she was due to open later that morning. Greg found the handbag the morning after Janine vanished. Greg says he suspects the bag had been hidden, deliberately."

Maybe the reason the keys weren't in the photo was that they were needed to open the store.
Not a case of robbery it seems, otherwise the money and phone would be gone.

I do have Facebook but don't use it to do anything on my page.
Only use it mainly to see crime related links and only login in for that purpose. Sometimes you have to be logged in to view the page.
I only login if I can't view the page without logging in.

The Night Driver Episode 8 - "Trying Like Mad" is now up on the Podbean site.

I have to learn to have patience. I won't have time to properly listen to it until tonight.

Changed my going out today plan because of eating something bad ( I think).
So decided to stick close the house, don't want to give TMI lol.
Two good things, I did a lot of trimming of my rose bushes out the front, pulled lots of weeds, and trimmed back some other stuff, looks a lot better, even if there's more to do. I have some budding rose cuttings in water, ready to be trimmed and put into vases.

The on topic thing is I can now listen to Episode 8, without having to wait til I get home, because I'm already here :)
