Yet another perp 'known to police' ! also a nine year old boy was held overnight on the central coast of NSW and molested by a perp 'known to police' when will this stop? What will it take to realize these 'things' have NO rights of anonymity from the public.

It's disgraceful....The Victorian justice system has a lot to answer for. I hope now something will change. We need to demand change.Stop slapping these criminals on the wrist and sentence them according to magnitude of their crimes.

I never involved myself in the idea of bringing back the dealth penalty but I am all for it now. We should not have to pay for their protection and for them to carry on their lives when they so cruelly take anothers.

Just turned on ABC24 to see the news scrolling across the bottom that they'd arrested the 47-year old they were seeking for this murder of Sarah Cafferkey

Sorry - off topic on this thread, I know. But for those not following the separate thread, I thought this may be of interest.

EDIT: "Police said that comments on social media sites may potentially affect the outcome of court matters relating to this investigation.
They requested people refrain from posting hateful or inciteful comments on those sites.
"

They and the judicial system really are just going to have to get used to it, aren't they? They are going to have to move into the 21st century, and out of the antiquated systems they cling to currently. But that's a whole 'nother discussion...

Good point about the RSLs etc Marly. I was thinking more along the lines of a whole bunch of clubs from a recognized precinct such as Kings Cross, or the Valley here in Brisbane. It wouldn't cost them all that much each if they all combined to have one or two shuttles buzzing about between, say, 11pm and 3am. And to restrict trips to a radius of, say 5Km or 10Km - something appropriate for their location but that taxis wouldn't like to do.

Just an idea - maybe not a goer...

Its good to hear some area's have good transport in action.

At the time of Jill's disappearance, I spoke with friends about the Melbourne city taxi situation and we collectively thought for those 'business' minded folks, there certainly exists a good potential market for a Female driving service, one which perhaps women can share ride. One which holds 'saftey' as a service delivery priority. Also a great market for our culturally diverse community!

Just came across an interesting piece of information. It is alleged that Adrian Bayley, (the accused in Jill's case) and Steven Hunter, (the accused in Sarah's case) were cellmates in Ararat Prison. www.aussiecriminals.com.au

Some positive socio/political/legal changes at State Government level as a result of this tragedy:

Domestic violence laws to be hardened, John Ferguson, Victorian Political Editor, The Australian.
TOUGHER laws to cut rates of domestic violence and crimes against women and children will be introduced next year by the Baillieu government in the wake of the murder of Jill Meagher and a spike in family-related assaults.

With respect Mr Baillieu, how will those laws help victims like Jill and Sarah? Does he think the offenders will go and read the Crimes Act first and change their mind?:twocents:

Unless something changed, I don't think the images were suppressed, just publication of info about his past - and that order is in force until the next court appearance in January.

In refusing the application to ban publication of Mr Bayley's image, Deputy Chief Magistrate Felicity Broughton said lawyers for the Herald Sun - who opposed the applications - submitted that images should only be banned when identity may be an issue at trial.

.. she said the issue of identity had not been flagged by either the defence or prosecution during yesterday's application and it was not her role to speculate.

She therefore refused the application to ban publication of Mr Bayley's image.

Excellent point about taxis and short trips. They hate it, and DO refuse them - often.

There are a few places overseas where late night entertainment precincts, such as Brunswick, or Kings Cross in Sydney, or the Valley in Brisbane, for example, collectively sponsor minibus shuttle services. I'm not aware of any here in Australia, but if all the club/bar/hotel owners got together and sponsored one or two shuttle buses that would take patrons home within a certain radius - one that would be considered too short for taxis - then I'm sure they would reap far more in custom than the cost of providing the service.

Bit like the free airport shuttles provided by collectives of hotels.

Wonder why nobody has suggested that to the clubs etc in Kings Cross who whinge so loudly about the problem of patrons getting home, resulting in fights at taxi ranks, girls having to find their own way home, and perhaps a lot of people simply not going out as they know they will have problems getting home.

Just a thought....

a club having a shuttle doesn't mean patrons will get home safely. Only weeks after Jill Meagher was murdered I heard of a local RSL clubs shuttle service choosing to drop a woman of nearly 60 at a railway station late at night, knowing full well she had no phone and no money on her, she had to walk the rest of the way home. It would have taken the shuttle about 5 minutes to deliver her safely home. A few people were quite disgusted and outraged that they would put a patrons safety at risk like that.

I assumed the media gag included images too. After his trial date was set, didn't all of AB's pics in the media suddenly have pixelated faces? What that deputy magistrate above says makes sense - if his identity isn't in question, then pics of him should be fair game :behindbar

I for one couldn't get over how average AB looked in his fb pic at least. We all need to see as many of these pics as we can - so we can get over any misconceptions we might have about what very bad people look like!

Once he was charged his pics in Vic publications were pixellated.

So agree with you about some of these offenders looking 'average'. People who do very bad things don't necessarily look very bad.:twocents:

Hi everyone :rocker:

I am a newie & have now registered after being totally consumed by JM case, and now with SC case, and from many moons ago JBR case.

I will have to go back and read through all previous threads ( says Miss time poor!)

Feeling the need to do something the Monday after her disappearance I had posters made up thanks to Plenty rd Officeworks ( Coburg and Preston were not interested in helping ) & placed them around my area ( Reservoir )... with the help from hubby who had a chat will the local police about the ins and outs of placing posters around the train station.
Weird thing is they were asking hubby about JM, said they had heard "something about it" but were not really aware of the details... or so they told him.
However they did not take down hubby's name or details.
This is just a personal snip of info that happened .

Driving alone in the car with Jill's missing posters staring back at me was a weird sad experience for me, I felt that she was no longer with us.... She was in the prime of her life, out with workmates... hubby just a stones throw away, what could possibly of happened to her?? But I just knew.

I did walk in Jill's footsteps to deliver flowers to her door on grand final day, this was the day after her body was found.

Interestingly enough, after she had been found I did see on other social media sites people taking about if they should remove her missing posters from poles, station's and street signs, I am in two minds about this because as far as I know not all witnesses came forward from the CCTV footage from Duchess boutique.
The more witnesses the better & the fellow that turned around in the footage .... well what did make him look back?
A shocking shocking crime that has forever changed my approach/views to walking on my own at night.

Hi Scoobysnak & welcome to Websleuths...glad you could join us. Great job putting up the missing posters!!

Re CCTV footage/witnesses...there may very well have been others who did contact LE but police have chosen not to release any further details to date. Perhaps once the case gets to court we could hear more.

Thank you very much Fuskier for that information.

MILLIONAIRE wife-killer James Ramage will be forced to explain at a hearing why he's been using an alias since being released on parole.
The Sunday Herald Sun can reveal the Adult Parole Board will hold a hearing late this week to determine if Ramage breached conditions of his release.
The board was informed that Ramage has been using the name James Stuart at Dimmeys, where he works in the head office.
The parole board has obtained emails that allegedly show Ramage's new moniker.
If Ramage has breached his bail conditions he could go back to jail to serve out the remaining two years of his term.
Ramage was released from prison last year after serving his minimum eight years for killing his wife Julie in 2003.
He beat a murder charge after his lawyers successfully argued Ramage had been provoked by his wife. The provocation defence has since been scrapped after widespread outrage.
Ramage admitted that he had strangled the mother of his two children after he had bashed her at their family home.
He then buried her in a shallow grave near Kinglake.
Ramage - whose middle name is Stuart - is prevented from changing his name without the parole board's permission.
The Sunday Herald Sun revealed last week that Ramage made inquires to change his name in March but was yet to submit a formal application.
Parole Board general manager David Provan said it was made "very clear" to Ramage that he would be in breach of his parole conditions if he changed his name without permission.

<modsnip>

**The Parole Board will determine in a hearing whether he Breached Conditions of his release.....***
Of course he breached those conditions, imo he should just be picked up out of his Porche and put straight back to jail. He was warned that he would be breaching those conditions if he did not make a formal request to the Parole Board to change his name. The Parole Board never received that formal Request.

He was released from Prison last year after serving his minimum 8 years...
He is living with a woman who has children???? Does she know his background?**

I can just imagine it ….

"Mr Ramage, you’ve changed your name. We made it very clear that you couldn’t do that without our permission."
"No really, I didn’t, I just dropped my surname."
"But Mr Ramage, that is representing yourself as someone different."
"No .. no … just decided to drop my last name. I’m still James Stuart Ramage, just prefer to call myself James Stuart."

Hope this isn’t another legal loophole that needs closing, otherwise it could be that AB and others will be trying it!
Thanks to whoever spilled the beans to the media about this fiasco.

MOO

Trust the jury to get it right in the Jill Meagher case by Justin Quill.
www.heraldsun.com.au
This article discusses authorities fears of social media influence on our Jury system, but suggests that Courts and judges must move with the times and accept that social media is here to stay. While the traditional media follow the rules of subjudice, so must social media because the rules of a ‘fair trial’ must be sacrosanct. The community and our courts must trust in our jury system because Jurors do their job - and they do it well. A trial will overtake social media in a juror's mind because of the impact of sitting in the front row of a trial for six or eight weeks; swearing an oath to do your duty; The Judge giving you directions on what you must do. The community and our courts need to trust our jury system to get it right in the Jill meagher case as Jurors will be influenced more by the direct experience of evidence produced at trial more than social media in the way authorities fear.
