A total of 14 males took part in the attacks.

Brothers Bilal Skaf and Mohammed Skaf were among the convicted rapists and led the attacks.

These charges relate to crimes committed over 12 years ago! It looks like VicPol are looking through all relevant unsolved crimes ... and maybe have received some tips. Good. If found guilty, surely serious consecutive sentences would mean this dangerous sicko will be put away permanently!

I find it remarkable that Doyle believes CCTV is “draconian”, when it strikes me as Luddite and therefore draconian not to have CCTV. Seriously, is this guy delusional? I think we all know where the truth lies when we saw the word 'costly'.

Why is he on bail? I'm surprised since he is charged with rape, and when I first heard this story in the news all I got from it was that he indecently hugged her, not rape. There's so much we are not being told.

Why is he on bail? I'm surprised since he is charged with rape, and when I first heard this story in the news all I got from it was that he indecently hugged her, not rape. There's so much we are not being told.

Maybe they're charging him with rape as a strategy to extract some confession from him as to what really happened, because he's denying involvement or playing it down- so they're playing it up, and they'll meet somewhere in the middle.

ONE of the men jailed for the series of horrific gang rapes in southwestern Sydney was set to be released to a caravan park on the state's south coast today with only his brother as a supervisor.

A Corrections NSW source said none of the specialist community compliance officers had been rostered on to check on his welfare during the caravan park visit.

"It's hard to believe that no one would check on him besides his own brother, but that's what was going to happen," the source said.

Howard Brown, from the Victims of Crime Advocacy League, said the person who approved the day release "should be sacked".

"This is like releasing a kid into the lolly shop without any supervision," Mr Brown said. "It's a silly decision for the community there and also for the offender.

"His brother as a supervisor is completely inappropriate. It's not in his interest to report anything that happens. It's just a disgraceful decision."

Shadow attorney-general Paul Lynch said he too was shocked at the decision.

It depends on the definition of rape. Does rape include what is called 'digital rape'? Maybe that is what they're meaning by rape. I fail to see how he raped in the commonly thought of way, if it was just a hug. If they mean digital rape, then the charge is not a tactic by the police.

It does say he hugged her and then sexually assaulted her, so I guess it depends what it means by "sexually assaulted". Seems pretty brazen behaviour in such a public place, so definitely concerned about how far he would go without an audience...or maybe that was the point!

Is there still some lingering archaic doubt in the court's eyes about the seriousness and violence of sexual assault?

JURIES will recommend what sentences criminals get for serious crimes if Labor wins the next state election.

Under the plan, to be tried if Daniel Andrews becomes premier in 2014, County and Supreme Court judges would be required to consult jurors and listen to their views before passing sentence.

Like judges, jurors would see the victim impact statements and pre-sentence reports, and hear submissions from counsel.

They would then be asked to recommend a minimum non-parole period.

This all sounds good, but I doubt this will make a real impact on crime. It sounds to me this is more cosmetic than anything else- just to give the people a sense of control over what they will in reality have zero control over, just as they do now.

It is very important to note that not all charges turn into convictions, yet we must remember what charges were brought, because they were brought by police, detectives who always knew more than was admitted into court; and narrowly remembering, or admitting, only convictions, does a great disservice to &#8216;context&#8217;, which is referenced in the latter part of the quotes:
"These are not ordinary people and we need to assess them in that context. We need to remember that some offenders get gratification from their crimes."

Yes, but then the civil libertarians come in with "He's done the time" type of bull s... Rehabilitation is such a joke! Legal and Prison systems Australia-wide need to look at the research of re-offenders and the type of crimes, and work out just who CANNOT be rehabilitated. Then stop spending money on these lost causes! Do these people get a kick out of their crimes, or do they just want to return to the routine of prison? Maybe a bit of both.

Whatever happened to castration? Not that it would stop murder. Maybe, just maybe, the death penalty is the only option. When AB attempted suicide, why not just let him go? Isn't that HIS right?

Sorry, I've caught the ranting bug. It is just so outrageous!

Parole violaters to go straight back to jail under new legislation

SEX offenders and violent criminals convicted of further sex or violence offences while on parole will be automatically returned to prison, under legislation to be introduced into State Parliament today.
The Government will also announce today that former Victoria Police deputy commissioner Kieran Walshe is to be appointed to the parole board, following calls by Victoria Police, and members of the public, for the appointment of a serving police officer.
