It’s understandable why people are reluctant to trust police. I hope someone will share where he may have taken her though. 😔 How far could he have made it on foot with her? The terrain doesn’t look particularly easy to traverse.

NT police commissioner speaking to ABC Radio Alice Springs

This morning NT Police Commissioner Martin Dole will be speaking to ABC Radio Alice Springs to provide an update on the search for missing five-year-old Alice Springs girl Sharon Granites.

Today marks day five of the search for little Sharon, who vanished from a home at Old Timers town camp on the outskirts of Alice Springs.

Police believe people are assisting Jefferson Lewis

NT Police Commissioner Martin Dole says he is still adamant that there are people who know information about the whereabouts of Jefferson Lewis.

"Our hope is that piece of information comes through, that someone in the community knows something and that they let us know," he said.

"There's people out there who are assisting, and that do know something, and that aren't feeding that information into the authorities."

Commissioner says resources poured into search similar to Falconio case

Commissioner Dole says the investigation into the case of Sharon Granites is "the biggest one I can recall in a very long time".

Noting comparisons to the Peter Falconio case, the commissioner said "that is the type of resources we're pouring into this".

"We've got specialist sections here, we've got assistance from interstate, we've had offers from interstate all over the other jurisdictions, we've got inquiries happening in other jurisdictions, and we're pouring every available resources down here to assist," he said

"And overwhelming support from the community as well."

Sharon's non-verbal communication 'complicates' search

Commissioner Dole acknowledges family reports that Sharon Granites is non-verbal, often communicating with her hands.

He said that this factor does "complicate" the search in a variety of scenarios.

If she is with Jefferson Lewis still, it means "she's unable to communicate needs".

And if she's wandered off at some stage, it makes searching "difficult" because "she's not able to communicate with searchers".

Police explain why they believe Jefferson Lewis is in Alice Springs

Commissioner Dole offered reasoning for police's belief that Jefferson Lewis is still in Alice Springs and being helped by some members of the community.

"The evidence is the lack of information. It is the absence of any sightings, anybody seeing him since the sighting at [Old Timers] camp that evening, that is highly unusual," Commissioner Dole said.

"By now we would have some information, somewhere that somebody would have said, 'Yes we have seen that man somewhere in the last four days,' and in that absence [it] tells us someone is assisting."
The commissioner added that "extensive searches" had also been done in communities outside of Alice Springswhere police know Jefferson Lewis has "linkages".

A lack of any sightings from people in those communities has led police to believe he is still in Alice Springs.

"People in communities know when there's somebody that's there that shouldn't be there or somebody that's not normally there, that's not the information we've got, so we're quite confident that he's not in any of the areas that we know he's got linkages to."

Police confirm Jefferson Lewis wasn't on bail

Police have previously told the media that Jefferson Lewishad only been released from prison six days prior to the day Sharon Granites went missing.

Commissioner Dole confirmed in this instance, Mr Lewiswas not on bail, instead he was released from prison after his full sentence had been served.

"So he wasn't subject to any conditions," Commissioner Dole said.

Commissioner urging community to hand-over information

Commissioner Dole said his message to those in the community who might have some information is "don't be scared".

"You might be fearful that there's some retribution if you give that information to police, please have the confidence that we will treat that sensitively, because our number one priority is finding Sharon," he said.

The commissioner also noted that "severe penalties" can apply to those who help a person during or after a crime.

Forensics from crime scene evidence expected today

NT police told the media yesterday “a number of items" had been seized from the crime scene at Old Timers camp.

Among the items was "a doona cover, the shirt that Jefferson Lewis was wearing – it was a distinct yellow one – and we seized a pair of child's underwear from that location," Assistant Commissioner Malley said yesterday.

Commissioner Dole has confirmed that the results of forensic testing for these items would come in today.

"They're being forensically tested for DNA to see if we can confirm or exclude DNA attributed to Sharon and attributed to Jefferson," he said.

'We can't close ourselves to any possibility in this case'

Commissioner Dole said investigators were being "careful of not being subjected to confirmation bias".

"So we can't go with a theory and pour all our resources and go that's what's occurred.

"And so that's why extensive searching is still continuing, because whilst we believe Jefferson that has taken her, and we believe that he may have her, there is a possibility that there is a lost and wandered scenario.

"We can't close ourselves to any possibility in this case".

Doesn't look good for finding Sharon alive. They are looking for a man who was released from prison 6 days ago. Jefferson Lewis.

Sharon's own father is in gaol now, according to Daily Mail. How little Sharon, 5, is linked to violent ex-con who 'abducted her' It's not unlikely others present that night also had criminal records. We haven't heard whether the found clothing forensically matched either of them, or whether the items were located close together. It's strange to me that Jefferson should dump his own T-shirt. Perhaps they've both been murdered. Perhaps he walked away with her not thinking it was a big deal--apparently he's family in some sense--and suddenly police were after him and he's scared. Perhaps somebody else took Sharon, and Jefferson having been named is scared anyway.

'Getting to the end of that timeframe of survivability'

Commissioner Dole has said NT police have consulted bush survival experts during this investigation.

He said that based on that advice, Sharon's chances of survival are now "starting to become quite concerning for people".

"We do consult people for survivablity and that's what gauges our search areas," he said.

"So we're getting to the end of that timeframe of survivability unfortunately, but that doesn't mean our search efforts are going to reduce significantly because like I said anything is possible in these scenarios."

Commissioner ends by issuing message to Jefferson Lewis

Commissioner Dole ends his update to ABC Radio Alice Springs by issuing a message to Jefferson Lewis if he is listening.

"Jefferson give us a call and we'll come and pick you up. You're not going to be able to avoid us forever," he said.

"We know that you're involved in this.

"My plea to Jefferson is to reach out to police."

I would say he removed his shirt as it was highlighter yellow and easy to spot.

I imagine some members of that community are too scared to rat the perp out. So few people, it would be easy to figure out who talked and retaliate…

The dynamics remind me a lot of small Native American communities in the US and Canada. Does Australia also see disproportionate numbers of missing Aboriginal women? This is the first case I’ve heard despite the fact that Aboriginal people make up a significantly larger percentage of the Australian population compared to Native Americans here.
Yes, the dynamic is simialr to Native American people. Australia has a disproportionate number of missing and murdered Aboriginal women, and their cases often don't get much attention :(
Aboriginal people make up roughly only 3% of Australia's general population but have much, much higher rates of victimisation, crime, illness, etc.

Does anyone else find it odd they didn't announce Sharon can't speak until only yesterday? If she's alive, the poor baby can't scream or call for/respond to help right?

Poor poor Sharon :(

I am wondering how kinship dynamics may be impacting on the search for precious Sharon. I am trying to be factual and avoid speculation or generalisations, however in some Aboriginal communities, culture and family relationships are complex and hierarchical and difficult for outsiders to understand. If this is such a community, and the perpetrator is from a family with higher community social standing and status then this may affect people's abilities to speak out.

There may also be other unsaid business going on between members of the community relating to past grievances that affect their abilities to speak out, and it would not be information that people would share with the authorities.

I hope that Sharon is somewhere safe and being cared for.
