Following Mr Lewis's arrest there have been violent scenes outside Alice Springs Hospital, where it is believed he was taken.

A police vehicle was set alight and police were pelted with rocks after hundreds gathered at the hospital.

Police with riot shields have used tear gas and rubber bullets on the crowd in an attempt to disperse those involved.

Rest In Peace Kumanjayi Little Baby. 💔 This is horrifying. I’m not surprised that an angry mob gathered, this is an unspeakable crime to commit against a little girl. Heartbreaking.

I feel for the poor police who have to protect this monster. Too bad the family didnt get to him first.

He probably won't be there too long. Unless he is in protective custody 100% of the time.

84% of prison detainees in the Northern Territory are of Aboriginal ancestry. I don’t think he will have an easy time in gen pop…

Members of the crowd were reportedly heard shouting “bring him out”, while officers can be heard telling people to “back up, back up,” in vision from the scene.

At one point a police car was set alight, and officers reportedly used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The Australian is reporting a viglinate group tracked down and allegedly beat the 47-year-old suspect who was taken to hospital by police at about 10pm.

Also feeling for the doctors and nurses whose job it was to patch him up after the beating.

Jefferson Lewis, 47, was flown to Darwin early on Friday morning due to “safety concerns”, Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole confirmed.

“Safety concerns for the hospital and medical staff, safety concerns for the police and lastly safety concerns for Mr Lewis himself,” Mr Dole said.

In The Australian this morning, they are reporting that he has an extensive head injury.

When the police went to get him from Charles Creek town camp, a crowd had gathered at the edge of the camp - crying things like poor sweet baby, that’s him over there … that prick, let him die, hit him, murderer, he effing took her life, don't effing save him.

The police had to patrol the area to allow the ambulance attendees to get him into the ambulance and to the hospital.

The article has a photo of the police shielding Kumanjayi Little Baby's body as they removed her. It is right by the river bed, among tall grasses, and near a couple of gnarly trees that are almost falling over (root balls exposed).

Commissioner Dole confirmed that when emergency services arrived at the scene, Mr Lewis was being assaulted and police had to intervene.

"Our police officers were attacked at that time, as were the the St John Ambulance crew that attended to assist," he said.

"They were turned on by about 200 people, but they were able to get out of there and get Mr Lewis to hospital."

A video of the arrest, seen and verified by the ABC, showed Mr Lewis unresponsive and face down in the dirt as officers wearing gloves put handcuffs on him.
