GUILTY Australia - Kylie Maybury, 6, abducted & murdered, Preston, Vic, 6 Nov 1984

  • #121
I'd like to talk more about Kylie but i was only four when she was murdered.
Where do we go from here, Ausgirl?

  • #122
Well. We could keep looking for a similar MO, in both convicted pedos and crimes against kids (as the link above shows, they love their routines). Try to see if we can place any likely pedos in the area. If you need a break (and I often take breaks from child crimes..they can really get a person down at times) there's probably quite a few of unsolveds in Aus not yet on the boards.

Reading on that last pedo article I linked, it was pretty schocking to see parents keep silent. I can understand kids...

Someone out there knows something about the man who took and raped and murdered Kylie. Our cold case people are on it.. I am sure it's a matter of time. Let's just keep hoping it's so.

Thanks for your note Paul

While I remember the awful Kylie Maybury case and still feel for the poor little one and her family, I have to confess I had no recollection of covering that Coronial finding. I used your Wikipedia entry to have a look at the clipping and I am surprised I don't remember it. Back in the mid-80s when I was Court reporting I was in one Court or another every day and some cases stay with you more than others. It is a long time ago and I haven't been in journalism since the late 80s.

It's nice to know Kylie's story is being recorded - she deserves that. Best wishes with the page/site.

Subject: Kylie Maybury

Hi

I was researching Kylie Maybury when working on the Wikipedia article on her murder and discovered that you reported on the 1986 inquest into her rape and murder for The Age. It's a shame The Age didn't invite you back to write an article for the 30th anniversary of Kylie's rape-murder.

I'm in a bit of a struggle to give Kylie a decent article at Wikipedia. Sometimes the editors there can be real drongos. They objected to me describing Kylie's bag as a "toy handbag" even though the phrase "handbag" by itself usually refers to the type used by adult women. They finally agreed to compromise with "little girl's handbag".

I was shocked to find out that the police offered a fifty thousand dollar reward. Fifty thousand dollars would have been worth a lot more in 1984 money than fifty thousand dollars in today's money, which makes it all the more staggering and depressing that nobody came forward.

I've sent enquiries to other journalists that were around at the time of the rape-kill outrage. Hopefully, my efforts will bear fruit and i can find out more information.

For what it's worth, I think that, although Robert Lowe didn't kill Kylie, he was in the Preston area at the time, and probably knew local Preston pedos, including the one who raped and killed Kylie.

"Never forget this horror"

Herald Sun (Melbourne, Australia) - Saturday, November 8, 2014

CONGRATULATIONS to Victoria Police and the Herald Sun for calling for information into the abduction, rape and murder of Kylie Maybury on Melbourne Cup Day in 1984 (“New hunt for killer”, HS, Nov 6).

Although I did not know her well, I went to the same school as Kylie, and I still remember the one occasion away from the school when we played “duck, duck, goose”.

While 30 years is a long time, Kylie has never been forgotten by those of us who grew up around the streets of Preston, and never will be. Someone, somewhere must know something. If that is you, please speak with the police.

The community should never give up on resolving this crime. We owe it to Kylie’s family, and we owe it to the precious little girl who so sadly met this act of unspeakable horror.

What a sad irony it is that it was much safer in the Soviet Union in 1984 to send a six-year old out to buy sugar (Norwegian Moscow correspondent Jahn Otto Johannesen reported in "Hos oss i Moskva" (= At home with us in Moscow) from the Soviet Union how much Russians cared for stranger children in the street), but there might not be any sugar in the shop!

It's awesome that you contacted the reporters, Paul. Sad that the first one didn't remember the story.... Ah well, maybe there's some others who will.

Nice to see her childhood pal writing into the paper, too.

  • #128
Ausgirl, I'm surprised none of Kylie's little girl (now adult women) friends wrote in to the paper. Maybe what happened is more painful for the women, then it was for Kylie's male friend?

I have access to newspaper archives going back to 1992 through my university. I'll post some of the old articles on the investigation of Robert Lowe. Since I'm accessing the articles through my university, they are free.

I've made contact with the lead investigator in the Cold Case Squad. He's offered to help and co-operate with me and us on Kylie.

OMG! Paul! \Unbelievably good move, there, good on you! The Vic squad are awesome. :) Looking forward to what they have to say to us. Maybe ask 'em if the guy who found her was cleared with dna? Or if there's even dna to use for testing anymore?

This is brilliant. :)

I only just got my first reply from him. I'm taking things slowly as I don't want him to think I'm an obsessed true crime wacko. I told him that I'm working on the wikipedia article on Kylie. When things are more familiar, I'll tell him about questions from WS.

Wow, you guys are amazing!!!! I too don't recall this case, though I was only 9 when this happened. What a great job you've both done getting so much info and going to such great lengths to do so!

If I can help in any way, please don't hesitate to holler.

Getting back to Ausgirl's theory that the killer let Kylie buy the chips as a way of "letting her go, without letting her go" and how similar it was to the Beaumont Children and them buying pastries with a pound note they had not had when they left home, I knows it's fairly unlikely it could be the same perp, but a lot of criminals study famous cases before carrying out their own.

I also find that quite bizarre and you are right in that so many perps seem to go a little 'copycat' in their methods! Refresh my memory. Was this supposedly before or after she bought the sugar?

  • #135
It was after she was known to have gone missing, Fence, so after the sugar purchase. Sounds like the witness got a really good look at her, so I'm taking it as a positive ID. And thanks - Paul's the one making the big strides at the moment, but it's great to see people putting effort in for this case. Wonder where Tash is at??

Paul, I dunno about copycat.. maybe? What I do know is that pedos share hints & tips with each other, and also they're very very good at manipulation so it's no surprise some come up with the same strategies. Sick thought, but it could even be part of their 'predator' behaviour, getting a thrill of some kind from 'playing' with the child's sense of trust, or the thrill of just having the child go free in public and no-ones the wiser.

Could also be that he needed to make a phone call to some buddies... :(

It's certainly not the behaviour of a first timer, at any rate. He's on the books SOMEwhere!!!I just know it!!!

  • #136
Yes, according to The Canberra Times, the sighting of Kylie buying a large serve of chips in the Kentucky Fried Chicken was at 6PM, about half an hour after the Food Plus worker said Kylie came in and bought the sugar, and after Julie Maybury had started to look for Kylie.

  • #137
I just want to add that given what I've read, I'm all but certain, that he would called his paedo buddies about his good fortune in "acquiring" Kylie and asking them to join him. I'll ask my cold case squad contact about what evidence was withheld from the newspapers.

  • #138
Just wondering if you guys would like to have a look at the Dane Kowalski thread, he's a missing man from Melbourne. It would be great to hear what your brilliant minds think of it :)

Just got another message from my cold case squad friend:

Hi Paul,

we find that over the years bit of information that started as rumour end up being asserted as fact. It's one of the dynamics that make cold case investigations that little more interesting/difficult.

A lot of what the newspapers reported back in 1984 was therefore either not true or half-true.

Hello All,
Just coming into this thread, like most of you, I have not heard about this case before (although I was only 2 or so when this happened)

I wonder if the neighbor who sent Kylie off, was fully investigated?

I am not convinced this was a spur of the moment abduction, rape, Murder.

Also, in regards to the Firefighter, like many of you, am in 2 minds. If I was to come across a small child lying in the gutter, it would spook me but I would do anything I could to raise alarm, AFTER I checked the childs well being (i am confident I would 100% check the childs wellbeing, before raising alarm). I would certainly not drive off, and go get someone else. I would stand in the middle of the road and scream if necessary. Or would run to the closest house, flag down any cars etc.
Also, did it mention he was in a Firetruck at the time of seeing Kylie's body - why didnt he radio it in, if that is the case.

In regards to the poster above who asked where Tash was, she was banned a few months ago for sending out (very creepy) messages- which I, aswell as a few other members received off her.
