I was thinking last night about Kylie's possible last sighting by a member of the public. Surely this would have been verified or discounted after the autopsy, there'd be evidence of Kylie's last meal in her stomach contents.
Unless, we are to believe Kylie was given money to buy chips for someone else which I highly doubt, if Kylie was in KFC, this would have been the enticement by the perpetrator to give her a treat she enjoys, imo.

Brightbird; Comparisons to Interstate child murders were raised by paul1980 re- South Australian Beaumont Children...thus raised by another initially... not me...I was contacted by a websleuths member alerting me to the revised Websleuths Beaumont Children's site and also to Kylie Maybury. But does it really matter!!!
It would be common sense for the lead investigator in Kylie's case to contact those Interstate for any new leads if the case hasn't moved forward in 30 years and S.A. is currently examining historical crimes of a similar nature. Paedophiles also have their Passports stamped and hop on planes to abuse children in other countries where there's easy access re- child sex trafficking, so crossing the border between any Australian State wouldn't present a problem in comparison. The similarities of food purchased as a means of gaining a child's trust is a worthy mention and deserving of further discussion. It could also indicate Kylie knew her abductor. She have given a description or identified him had she survived the attack.

paul1980...Do you know whether autopsy results were able to confirm Kylie bought chips re- undigested stomach contents on examination.

I can't believe it! I was thinking the same before I read your post and wrote mine.
In the cold case for the Grimes sisters, their autopsy report identified their last meal and the popcorn they ate at the movie theatre.

Here's a small example of child murders where Police and Media claim the same perpetrator had crossed State borders and had multiple victims.

Derek Percy: - Convicted for the murder of Yvonne Tuohy age 12 in 1969 / Victoria.

For decades he's also been held responsible for the murders of...

Christine Sharrock age 15 and Marianne Schmidt age 15 ... Sydney 1965 (Wanda Beach Murders).
Linda Stilwell age 7 / St. Kilda Victoria (disappeared / no body found).
Beaumont Children Jane - 9, Anna - 7 and Grant aged 4 (disappeared /no bodies found) Jan. 1966 Adelaide.
Allen Redston - 6 / Sep. 1966 Canberra.
Simon Brook - 3 / found partially clad, genital mutilation / 1968 Glebe Sydney.

Percy denied murdering any of the above (unsolved cases) and refused to give his D.N.A.. He died in prison. There was no "death bed confession".
He moved about from State to State due to his occupation / Navy. Prior to that it was thought he visited Adelaide in 1966 as a teenager. This supported those claiming he murdered the Beaumont Children. No-one added that he would have been 16 / 17 in 1966, had no car and didn't know Adelaide well enough to have managed to snatch 3 children, transport them somewhere and successfully hide their bodies for 49 years.
Also, the witness accounts given for the man last seen with the children the day they disappeared (26/1/66), was said to be more than twice Percy's age (mid to late 30's).

Derek Percy died recently. I read that a D.N.A. sample was taken from his corpse... for testing.
If the public have been repeatedly told for decades, that Percy murdered all the others, isn't it time we were told whether his D.N.A. matched any of those other cold cases, and perhaps give their grieving families some peace.
The perpetrators semen was taken from victims of the Wanda Beach murders, and I'd expect evidence was collected from the other cold cases, bar Linda Stilwell and Beaumont children, who's bodies remain missing.

South Australia has a case going back to Dec. 1958 where 9 year old Mary Hattam was found raped, mutilated and murdered near Ceduna.
A very unfortunate aboriginal man (Stuart- age 27) was wrongfully convicted and jailed. Due to public protest, he was spared the death sentence. A Royal Commission exposed Police rigging his said 'confession'.
Someone murdered Mary Hattam and they remained free.
The same can be said of all those other unsolved murders if it's found that Derek Percy is not a D.N.A. match. Derek Percy was jailed around 1970. He stayed till he died. In South Australia more children disappeared after 1970. More children have been murdered Interstate.

I have no idea who murdered Kylie Maybury, but who would be hurt by broadening the net of possible perpetrators in other States. For 30 years her murderer has been at large. Just like Mary Hattam, Linda Stilwell, Simon Brook, Beaumont Children etc. etc.. So do we have scores of child murderers running freely about Australia...each victim 'a one of' ... or do we have a person/s who never stopped.

Back on topic of the thread thanks folks.

And please leave out the personal attacks.

No-one would want to be thrust into media headlines for something like this. When terrible crimes devastate families, an appearance in the paper doesn't make all their members (victim's family) Public property to be individually scrutinised forever on. This family lost 3 of it's members, not only Kylie.<modsnip>
Same applies to the chap that found her. He 'chose' to stop and subsequently became a witness.
The Police would have examined every angle already. That 'their' job.
He along with the Uncle and the Grandfather, were all eliminated as suspects via D.N.A. tests.
Remember that anyone / any witness, considering coming forward now and regardless of how much time has passed, might hesitate at the thought of being persecuted even though they're doing the right thing. Viewing this thread could be their first step along the path that lead to a Police Station.
Alternately it might see them bolt in the opposite direction.

Is it possible to put Crime Stoppers contact details up on the header page with some direction for anyone with new information / witnesses etc., so they know who to speak with. If Kylie's murderer was a local predator, any other child abuse victims from that area would now be aged either side of 40. As children their input may have been overlooked at the time. Either they didn't understand the nature of their experience, forgot or said nothing at the time but can add to information now as adults.
Any Help Line / Counselling or Suicide Prevention contact numbers might also be of assistance to guide them through the difficult process of speaking up.

for the purposes of illuminating the atmosphere of when Kylie was taken, does anyone know what was Cup Day like for Melburnians in 1984?

I'm two years younger than Kylie so the earliest Cup Day that really sticks in my mind is 1988 because that year Mum let me bet two dollars on Empire Rose at the TAB.

Christmas was only weeks away when Kylie was killed. I'm sure her mother had planned something special for Kylie and Rebecca's Christmas, even with her meagre resources as a single mother. I'm sure Kylie loved her baby sister. Sadly, Rebecca won't have any first hand memories of Kylie.

Paul1980 - Did you ever receive any response back from Darryn or the police??

I am curious to know if anything was found in Kylie's tummy and bag...

Hi newbie here hope the link works.

Link to 1986 newspaper article about the Coroner findings (Top Middle of the paper) http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1300&dat=19860123&id=kcwzAAAAIBAJ&sjid=U5UDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6758,4146460

"The man who found the body, Mr Neil Rickwood, told Mr Adams that he had driven along Donald Road at 7.15 that night and the body had not been there."

He found her at 1 am? So according to this article Kylie was dumped in the gutter between Nov 6, 7.15 pm to 1 am Nov 7. Do we know when LE also searched Donald Road?

Blessed:
Haven't heard anything back from Derryn Hinch or my cold case squad contact. I sent my contact the link to the WS thread.

I am sure there was a reply to mine re daylight savings - it disappeared? Anyway thank you - got me looking at how dark/light it would be to be brazen enough to dump a body on a street that the police had also been searching.

Apparently Nov 6 1984 was two days before the full moon (mmm...)- so very bright. The moon would have been at it Zenith (highest) at approx 10 - 11 pm pm. If you have a play with the link attached the sun setting and moon rising = not allot of darkness to be used for cover (unless cloud cover?). Makes me think a local took her and kept her locally and dumped her when he could/ knew the police had finished in the area. So she may have been found not long after she had been placed in the gutter?

We're talking Preston in the 80's so I'd think there would have been streetlights anyway.

Sorry that was me, lol.
Yes, it was daylight savings in November 1984, confirmed by Ausgirl's link (TY Ausgirl). The hottest day was Nov. 2, 1984 at 29 degrees. I checked the 1984 Melbourne Cup Youtube link and it was a fine day, no rain.
There'd be plenty of light after 8pm still, maybe, Kylie was left at Donald Street after 9pm and before 12.45am, so it was pretty dark.

Imo, the perp didn't drug and assault/murder Kylie in his vehicle, there are too many houses in the area, and I doubt he would come back to dump the body in Donald St. This perp could even have been on foot and walked Kylie to his house in the pretense of showing her something. I believe the perpetrator lived in one of the houses on that map.

KylieM.jpg

EDIT: Donald Street has a park, I think that's where Kylie was left, not many houses in that section of street or street lights.

Pic of park in Donald Street, there is no lights on that side of the street. Easy for perp to dump body undetected. :(

about the "vaginal trauma" mentioned in the newspaper reports... I'll ask my cold case contact whether that means the impact of an adult male's um Johnson in a child size vagina, or whether the police think objects were used too...

I posted a few pages back, some google map images of the street and the park, and the location where Kylie was found is actually close to the entrance of an alleyway, some ways up the street from the park and its various buildings.
