I cannot believe he is still in there, considering he is meant to be alone. Why dont they just barge in or like you suggested always to throw tear gas in.
Can't they just throw in some tear gas or something?

So still going. He obviously hasn’t run out of whatever drug he has. I think they generally keep communication going to wear them down a bit until they tire out. Constant calling etc. I was surprised the father was allowed in, you would expect a deed had to be done in return. Do they cut power and water in these situations. Might be hard in units.
I imagine they are treading carefully due to this being apartments and no doubt families in the zone.
After Lindt Cafe (which is not same situation, I realise ) but it is similar in terms of response, they did introduce new ways to handle these situations. The tactical police will switch shifts, but I am wondering if the poor negotiator has to stay for communication reasons. That doesn’t seem like a job that could change shift over.
It does seem to be going on for a while considering no hostage. Maybe they don’t have good sight into unit or access.
Not sure if that was my son I would be animated and happy after seeing them and then just drive of home. Although animated can explain all types of emotions.

His father left appearing happy and animated?
Well. Okay then.

They were very clear that they believed he was alone in the unit. I'd pull up the post but the search function doesn't work at all for me anymore.
Thanks, I saw that after I posted. I don't understand why they haven't taken him down yet. Or at least remove the people in the surrounding apartments. Makes me wonder what kind of weapons he has-- could he have a bomb or something and he is threatening to blow the building? I hope he is taken alive so he will answer what he knows about Larissa but the longer this goes on the more dangerous it becomes for those poor vacationers trapped in their apartments.

WHAT WE KNOW

    • Body in a barrel murder suspect Zlatko Sikorsky is inside an apartment in Juan St, Alexandra Headland
    • Heavily armed police have him cornered and are negotiating with the 34-year-old
    • An emergency exclusion zone has been active since 3.30pm. Residents are not allowed into their homes while those inside the zone cannot leave
    • Neighbours reported a domestic argument before police swarmed on the area
    • A mobile police command centre is active. More than 40 officers on scene
    • Sikorsky is believed to be armed and dangerous
UPDATE 8.30AM: A holidaymaker staying within the Alexandra Headland siege zone says fugitive Zlatko Sikorsky has "opened his door" to negotiate with authorities.

It has been a tense standoff between Sikorksy and authorities for more than 16 hours. There are reports that the 34-year-old's father has been at the siege zone overnight working with police negotiators.
The Tasmanian tourist has stayed in the same complex in which Sikorsky is holed-up for the past 10 years.

He said he has tried to get back inside the unit three times but been unsuccessful.

"We were in the unit next door and at about 3.30pm yesterday we saw the all police turn up with megaphones and surround the building," the holiday maker said.

"They were heavily armed. So we stayed a little while longer.

"We heard over megaphone the police ask for his mobile phone number, which he gave them.

"We think there was a woman inside from what they were saying but we don't know. Police told me his door is open now so hopefully that helps with everything."

'Snipers are using my home': Fugitive may have assault rifle

Now I'm confused on the bolded statement above about they think there was a woman in the apartment... Did they hear one of the neighbors?

I just watched a police brief with Sunshine Coast ABC just now. It was interesting as he would not comment if anyone else was inside the unit. Last night they were saying no. I wonder why no comment this morning. Although he did state no comment for a lot of inside info.
ETA- thanks gardener - your last bonded paragraph makes a little sense.

Police negotiations with Zlatko Sikorsky for more than 16 hours, and said discussions would "take as long as they take".Mr Sikorsky is wanted in connection with the discovery of a woman's body in a barrel earlier this week.On Friday afternoon #SunshineCoast #Brisbane

Well that's lovely for the people trapped in there and the ones who can't return home.

A man wanted for questioning following the discovery of a teenage girl’s body in a barrel was still holed up in a Sunshine Coast unit after 16 hours, with the area cordoned off by police.

Zlatko Sikorsky, 34, has been wanted since Wednesday over the disappearance of 16-year-old Brisbane girl Larissa Beilby.
Hours of negotiations with police and his father had not persuaded Sikorsky to leave the unit in the Alexandra Headland complex early on Saturday.

Residents in the Juan Street complex were told to remain indoors and the public to avoid the area bound by Mary, Mayfield and William streets as well as Alex Parade.

Police are yet to confirm whether it was Beilby’s body found in the barrel but have revealed she and Sikorsky are known to each other.

Police previously said Sikorsky could have access to firearms.
“We’re just asking people in the local area here to stay away,” superintendent Darryl Johnson said.

“We’re quite comfortable we’ve got the situation contained.

“There’s no threats involved at all.”
Man remains holed up in Sunshine Coast unit after body found in barrel

BBM, um what do they mean no threats? o_O There's an armed gunman who allegedly fled from the scene of a body in a barrel holed up in an apartment building. I think that is pretty threatening.

ETA: I also wanted to say we still don't know if it was Larissa in the barrel. :(

Residents have been asked to restrict their movements and members of the public should avoid the area as roadblocks were in place, restricting traffic and pedestrian movement.

Those heading to the Sunshine Coast for the start of the school holidays were urged to check whether their accommodation was within the exclusion zone.

Police provided an update on Saturday morning saying some units had been evacuated, but the majority of residents were still in their homes and were safe.

I think this morning's press briefing is here but I can't get the video to play: Sunshine Coast siege: Body in barrel suspect still holed up
Hi
I think this is the one I watched. It played for me thank you. Recap is basically negotiations ongoing. Community safe. Trying to allow community to go about limited business. They would prefer people to limit activity. Some residents need to stay put. Would not confirm whether he has weapon, or if anyone else in unit or what the conversation are. Just that he is communicating with them. Confident of resolution and need to be mindful of mans welfare.

With being on the run, now ongoing conversations etc, he needs to sleep.
Then .......

'I said to my mate yeah, come round. It'd be good to catch up,' the tenant said on Saturday. 'My mate brought this bloke!'

Sikorsky and the pair's mutual friend arrived at 1pm.

The tenant did not know who Sikorsky was and had not been following the news he was a wanted man, he said.

Joe's estranged partner later arrived and the pair had a loud argument about 2.30pm, leading to the manager at the Headland Gardens estate to knock on the door.

It was Sikorsky - who has a series of distinctive tattoos - who answered. The employee recognised the fugitive and is believed to have called the police immediately afterward.

Lindt Cafe lasted around 17 hours. This is almost at 24 hr mark. I googled another siege that lasted 40 hours many years ago.
I can’t help but wonder if someone is in the unit. Although I am reminding myself of the nearby residents in units.
The fact people briefly, apparently went in and out and even the manager knocked on door. Yet police turned up tactical with megaphones. I wonder why they didn’t just knock on that door first.
Maybe they were aware of weapons he had actually, that makes sense why they didn’t just knock.

He had a gun when he forced the people to open the gate and let him in. There would be no reason why he would not still have it.

And I am not totally sure that I believe the tenant who said that a friend brought him there and he did not know that he was wanted.

I agree. I just read something like the tenant now says he saw guns and the guy was worried he would call police when he went to shop. Umm he had to know something, a normal visitor does not act that way.

ETA - there’s some errors in the rush to get this out - guns/ funs. But anyways

Larissa Beilby lived in halfway house to escape violent ex
Liberal National Party deputy leader Tim Mander says the case raises serious questions about the state's parole system.

"The person has a long, violent criminal record and is currently out on parole. In fact he had breached parole," he told reporters on Friday.

"And I think it's a reasonable question for people to ask: Why is this man out on the streets?"
