Murdered teen Larissa Beilby never on child safety radar: Minister

[...]

But Ros Bates, the Queensland opposition spokeswoman for women, said child safety sources had told her a school counsellor helped secure Larissa temporary accommodation.

“There have been allegations made that she went to a school counsellor and said she was in fear for her life,” Ms Bates said.

Ms Bates also questioned why an “amber alert” — used for abducted or high-risk missing children — was not issued.

“It seems that the system that’s supposed to protect our vulnerable children may have failed another poor young girl,” she said.

Detectives have laid 16 additional charges against Zlatko Sikorsky, who is also accused of murdering Larissa Beilby after her body was discovered in a barrel south of Brisbane on Wednesday, including torture.

Mr Sikorsky was initially facing one count each of murder and misconduct with a corpse, and has since been charged with 16 other offences, including torture, deprivation of liberty, possessing weapons and dangerous drugs, and dangerous operation of a vehicle.

He is expected to face the Maroochydore Magistrates Court this morning.

This is just horrid. It is getting worse.
He can hide all he wants, the world will now see him, as he is.
Yuk.

Sikorsky's lawyer, Brendan Ryan, told ABC News his client "did not commit this murder" and that "it isn't a murder."

"Unfortunately the way it looks at the moment is this young girl disappeared from her relations and she has unfortunately passed away, but Mr. Sikorsky certainly did nothing to cause her death."

Ryan said he "absolutely believed" Sikorsky was innocent having "received instructions" consistent with innocence.

Queensland Police first began searching for Sikorsky on Thursday, after a body was found in a barrel in the back of a black ute in Stapylton on Wednesday.

What the heck does he mean by "received instructions"? Is this an Australian legal phrase?

The man accused of murdering 16-year-old Brisbane girl Larissa Beilby and leaving her body in a barrel on the back of a ute has not attended his first court hearing. Zlatko Sikorsky, 34, did not appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday after being charged with murder, interfering with a corpse and 16 other charges, including weapon and drug offences.
The matter has been adjourned for committal in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on September 3
