A man who told people he was "adopting" a child days before kidnapping a toddler with whom he had formed an "obsession" will be released after serving less than a year in jail.

In the District Court in Brisbane on Thursday, Olando Aleki, 31, pleaded guilty to one count each of child stealing and entering a dwelling with intent.

Last February, Aleki disguised himself in a surgical mask and wore leather gloves to break into a Darra home in Brisbane's south-west, where he snatched the 20-month-old from his cot in the early hours of the morning.
.......
The court heard Aleki suffered an adjustment disorder and was subject to "repeated attachment disruption" during his childhood, but had no psychiatric conditions that would deprive him of the capacity to understand his actions.

......
Aleki was also given a three-year parole order and warned that due to his New Zealand citizenship he will likely face deportation following his release.

Man who claimed he was 'adopting a child' convicted of stealing toddler from Brisbane home

It's incredible, he's being released after less than a year. Are children safe from this man, is he getting help for these obsessions? It's amazing the selfishness and entitlement issues. Aleki suffered from disruptions in his own childhood and yet, felt the baby being raised by the grandmother wasn't suitable, did he crown himself a better parent?

Feb 8, 2021

A man accused of taking a one-year-old boy from his cot at his Brisbane home yesterday will stay behind bars after appearing at Richlands Magistrates Court.
Olando Emile Aleki, 31, is facing two charges including stealing a child and enter dwelling with intent. He applied for bail but was refused.
His lawyer Tahlia Boettcher tried to argue Aleki has mental health issues, but admitted he is undiagnosed and unmedicated.
......
"He told police he was a schizophrenic and is hearing voices. And he's [allegedly] entered someone's residence wearing a mask and gloves ... there's obviously on the police facts, some thinking behind that."

Police claim Mr Aleki was captured on CCTV walking into the Darra home and taking the sleeping toddler straight out of his cot, then walking out.
The boy's step-grandfather realised the infant was missing an hour later and called Triple Zero. An Amber Alert was issued and detectives located him at a Salisbury home, unharmed seven hours later.

Accused Brisbane child abductor was 'hearing voices'

Aleki knew the child's mother and spent limited time with the baby but became obsessed with him.

Olando Emile Aleki showed no emotion as family members described the gut-wrenching moment they discovered the young child – who was known to him – was missing in the wee hours of the morning.
Disturbingly, family members of the child told the court that Aleki, 31, had given virtually no reason for his actions.
.....
Family members of the child described the ongoing trauma they suffered after the incident, with the boy’s grandmother feeling constantly on edge and “overprotective” on simple outings like taking him to the park. Another family member said she felt angry that Aleki had never given any answers to “why he did this”.

Mr Corsbie said Aleki had shown no insight into his offending as he told doctors he wished he could have spoken to the child’s mother and acknowledged he “could have gone about it a better way”.
“He perceived rightly or wrongly he could provide that care he himself hadn’t received as a child,” Mr Whitton said.

Shock reason man snatched sleeping boy

If the family didn't have cctv, who knows how long it would've been before police found him? It doesn't appear like the family would suspect Aleki, they've got no idea why he did it! And with most obsessions, it would pass and then, reality kicks in....
Poor little boy, understandably, he's quite fearful still. :(

How can he be released so soon? Do they believe he has been rehabilitated ?
There's no mention that he's required to get treatment. The grandfather is totally shocked he's going to be free and he could run into him anywhere.
I just throw my hands up at these lame sentences and no mandatory treatment order as part of the 3 year parole period.

Something to think about -

Penalty for stealing
The head sentence for stealing is generally five years imprisonment (s 398 Criminal Code). However, this head sentence can be increased to ten years imprisonment where the following features exist:

  • the property is stolen from the person by another
  • the property is stolen from a dwelling and exceeds $1000 in value, or was taken with a threat of violence
  • the property is stolen from a vehicle
  • there is a relationship between the stealing and the defendant’s position (e.g. public servant, clerk, servant, company director, agent or tenant)
  • the value of the thing exceeds $5000 or after previous conviction
  • the property stolen is a firearm.
Where the property stolen is a firearm and is being stolen for the purpose of committing an indictable offence, or the property stolen is a vehicle, the head sentence can be increased to 14 years imprisonment. Finally, where the property stolen is a testamentary instrument (a will), the head sentence can be increased to life imprisonment.

Stealing

It appears stealing someone's property is taken more seriously than kidnapping a child when it comes to sentencing. The justice system needs an overhaul, we're still in the dark ages where children once held little value. :( JMO
