Wanted to bring some good news for a change. This is really a miracle!

On Monday, just before 5 pm, Yavapai County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a missing 2-year-old child who wandered off from his home in Seligman. Over 40 search and rescue members, several deputies, DPS, a DPS ranger, and Coconino County Sheriff’s deputies immediately headed to the property. After 16 hours of searching, a rancher approximately 7 miles away reported that a young child had walked onto his property. Upon arrival at the ranch, deputies confirmed this was indeed the missing boy.

Investigators say a dog named Buford led a toddler to safety hours after he walked away from his home in Seligman.

The high desert of northern Arizona is unforgiving, especially overnight when temperatures drop and predators come out.

“There were even two mountain lions spotted during the search last night,” said Megan Fitzgerald, YCSO’s public affairs and government relations director.

Dunton (the rancher) told deputies that his dog Buford found the boy while patrolling the property and likely protected the child while directing him to safety.

“Going down the drive way and my dog was sitting down there with the little kid,” Dunton told Arizona’s Family. “just brought him up from the horse pasture and brought him over to the gate and was just hanging out with him.”

Dunton said the only explanation he could think of is that Boden followed the powerline all the way to his property.

Dunton said Buford is an Anatolian Pyrenees dog.

"He picked him up at least a mile out. I don't know how far past that, that he found him but he hung with him and brought him back here. So, good dog," Dunton said.

At around 8:00 a.m., Dunton found the two standing at the main gate of his property.

"When I got the little kid to calm down, I asked him 'did you walk all night?' and he said, 'no I slept under a tree' and I said, 'did my dog find you?' and he said 'yep!' and I said, 'you just followed my dog? He goes 'yup' and the dog brought him over here," Dunton recounts.

More at link. Boden is fine and only suffered a scrape on his arm. He had wandered from home while his mom was changing a sibling's diaper. Buford got a steak dinner!

Just out of curiosity, I mapped out the route that I think the Rancher described in his story. The missing flyer says the boy was missing from the area of Jolly Rd & Agave Way. The Rancher says he thinks the boy followed the power lines from his house to his ranch. Conveniently, Mr. Dunton's ranch is labeled on google maps.

There's three homesteads near Jolly Rd & Agave Way, so I drew a line from them, following the power lines to Mr. Dunton's ranch. And I measured it and it's about 7 miles.

Smart kid and smart dog!
