A few things about this conman jumped out to me. Has this person been talked about? Business, identity and tax fraud declared bankrupt in 1999.

Paul Joseph MacMahon, aged 60
Was Paul McMahon
Changing his name again to Paul Rawlings Mann

Recent article but behind a paywall.

Basically convicted conman, tax fraud, 42 counts of identity fraud including false passports. The kicker is he lived in Casino/Lismore areas which is very close to Byron Bay and he quote “left in the lurch creditors in Sydney Ballina, Casino, Lismore as well as Sweden, The Netherlands and Luxembourg.

Paul Joseph McMahon was sentenced to six years jail last September for a string of charges of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception and attempting to obtain financial advantage by deception.
Conman takes company
Very interesting StarrChance :)

I'm trying to remember... in the past we've talked about fraudster Goran Markovic, but his timeline didn't match up with Marion's.

I think this is the first I'm hearing about conman Paul Joseph McMahon / Paul Rawlings Mann.

He's known to use aliases and also has ties to NSW north coast, Byron Bay and Luxembourg.

Here's two free articles about him:

Australian Financial Review 1999

Sunshine Daily Coast 2010

Hi,
I saw this thread when I was searching google about Paul McMahon. He actually lives in my street and is pretty unusual. Does the podcast mention him at all? If so I will give it a look.

I know his property has been raided by what look like AFP / ATO staff in the last few years.

He claimed that in March 1998 he had been appointed a director of a major European holding and development company named Innoheld SA. His family lived in Byron Bay's top street, Lighthouse Road. When they travelled in Europe they had homes in Sweden and Holland and were said to stay in the Royal Apartments in Luxembourg.

A few of my own observations - A man went missing in May 1997 after visiting someone in Southport, NSW. His disappearance was within 10 days of Marion's deedpoll change. His daughter told me that the man seen in the fast food car park by Sally could match his description but there is nothing else at all we could find. The person in question worked for Hunter security after the army so this may fit in with someone calling themselves 'Clark Hunter' and messaging Marion's daughter Sally. He was dating a teacher but told his family that she was more his age at the time which was 31yrs and that she was from a local state school. I think his daughters step father also met the teacher and said she was young and very hot so she can probably be ruled out. Strangely though his daughter remembers as a child visiting a place with a kind teacher who had a house with dimmed lamp shades (Marion liked her Laura Ashley lamps). She also has a vague recollection of the name "Sally" which is the same name as Marion's daughter.

Here is my second theory - We hear throughout the podcast that Marion liked her men. I cannot for one moment imagine any theory that would suggest Marion decided to become a man. However I do wonder if Marion may have decided to participate in a polygamous relationship, possibly with a Mr Remakel like the name in the small ads and another woman. I don't know enough about Mr R in the podcast only that he is a retired midfielder football player from Luxembourg. What he does in his private life is really his own business so I don't want to speculate. Just to say that I think polygamy could be something which hasn't been looked at more closely.

My understanding is that the dentist interviewed in the podcast was some random parent of a child in her class. It is one of the weird tangents that the podcast goes on, like the whole irrelevant episode about Hermes FarEasternShining.

The man interviewed is not the dentist who signed the back of her passport photos. Apparently the police know who this person is (as they just asked the passport office). This is information that they did not disclose to Sally but will have to divulge at the forthcoming coronial inquiry. How it is even known that this person is a dentist I am not sure of - maybe she told that much to someone at the time.
There was something in the press about a 70 year old Gold Coast dentist in Southport who was cleared of an assault related to a bag of sex toys. His Co-accused both pleaded guilty for assault. The same dentist was then up before the courts again more recently facing drugs charges and according to the press had a suspended jail sentence for failing to give police access to his mobile phone. A dentist with the same name was on the lady vanishes podcast.

Yes I know Southport well, have been there many times.
My geography is not so good. *Correction** Southport is immediately north of the border of New South Wales and part of the Gold Coast.

Oh wow, thanks TootsieFootsie, I'll be listening ... I'm still completely fascinated with this case, will be following along with great interest. Hope they can solve it, and clear up the mystery of the Remakel name. Cheers

Yes the Remakel name can't just have come out of nowhere. Unless it did mean Remake 1.

Ie a new beginning. A new person.

Only 19 days to the new episode, if that's what The Lady Vanishes returns does mean.

Countdown is on, just a week to go! I am desperately trying to keep my expectations in check, but my god am I excited that Marion and her family are finally getting due process!

For anyone that’s interested, here’s some info on what an inquest is and what it can achieve….

The Coroner investigates unexpected or unnatural deaths, as well as long term missing persons that are suspected to be deceased, as is the case with Marion.

The Coroner’s purpose is to determine the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the death. This is mostly done behind closed doors.

Police assist the Coroner with the investigation, and family and witnesses are interviewed. Many times, this type of investigation is sufficient, the case is closed, and a 'finding without inquest' is published.

Only a very small percentage of cases go to an inquest and court room. These are when a death is part of a larger public safety issue, or cases with significant public interest.

An inquest has the same elements of the initial ‘closed door’ investigation - to determine the circumstances surrounding the death, but they also bring in experts and discuss whether the death was preventable. The Coroner can make recommendations intended to improve law enforcement procedures and public safety.

The main thing to remember is that the Coroner doesn’t ever find people guilty. It's not their purpose. It’s not a criminal court but an inquisitorial court. They can’t actually say, "this person is responsible for that person’s death”.

If during the inquest preparation, law enforcement find proof of suspicious circumstances and involvement of a particular Person Of Interest, then the Coroner usually places their inquest on hold, the POI is charged, and a new case would begin at a criminal court.

Once the criminal component is complete, the Coroner resumes their inquest and gives their finding. They may or may not agree with the criminal court outcome.

I've heard of a few cases where the criminal court let a POI “off the hook” because they didn’t have enough evidence, so once the Coroner finalised their inquest, he made a point of saying the death showed involvement from that same POI, who couldn’t be convicted, lol.

The deceased’s family can appeal the Coroner’s findings. The family are also allowed to see the file once the inquest is done. However, there is usually a caveat that parts of the file not be made public. Media can request the file, but they usually only get a fraction of it, not as much as what the family gets to see.

What does this all mean for Marion’s case? Given the inquest is still going ahead in a week, it likely means they DON'T have a main POI to bring charges against.

Here are some of the possibilities of how it might go… The Coroner can:

· find that Marion is deceased due to an unrelated accident
· find that Marion is likely deceased with no idea how she might have died
· find that Marion is likely deceased and refer case to homicide squad
· confirm LE made many mistakes that hindered finding Marion sooner and prolonged her family’s distress
· make recommendations to improve missing person’s procedures
· close the case saying Marion’s status is inconclusive.

In any case, at least Sally can see the file, then appeal the Coroner’s finding or take the issue to another court.

Marion's case is tricky in that there are no remains... that we know of. Here’s an example of a recent inquest of a decades long missing person who turns out died in a car crash but police failed to investigate properly:
Inquest hears of catastrophic failures by police in missing persons cold cases.
