This new episode, inquest Part 4 is the most interesting so far. Hey, they read out the two postcards .... some good clues in these cards about where Marion was staying. Fabulous.
*****spoiler alert .... JLZ bravo

I wonder if Marion and her family knew a dentist growing up or if Lee was particularly interested in dentistry, the way the dentist was brought up like that was a bit random. My guess re the Mazz comment - maybe Lee often called Marion 'Mazz' and Marion was remarking that she found someone with the same nickname. That's sort of how that came across to me.

It must be referencing this Tootsie .... h'mm, I haven't really noticed that before, good pick up. What's George's storage - is that a business or a person? Interesting.

Might be Chris' grandfather? She had items stored at his house.

I understand why people are being critical for the NSW police barrister for challenging some of the smaller inconsistencies with statements and the like, but I myself admit that I sometimes get caught up by these little details being wrong too. I fully and 100% understand that Sally is a victim here (and empathise with her a great deal), I just have noticed a loooot of heat towards this barrister on the FB page.

It is frustrating me that the police are taking a battering for the handling of the case in the early days and I think NSW barrister is on the defensive over the bad publicity and the accusation of mishandling the case in the beginning . I don't like that they seem to be coming out all guns blazing for Sally, that is not fair or called for, she is a victim no matter the reason for Marion's departure. However I really do think that we have been lead to believe that she was reported as a missing person by Sally, I don't think she was, and I can see how the confusion took place, if you are asked to establish if the removal of money was a fraud or the actual person, that is not a missing person case and therefore the missing persons process not followed. Sally commented "in my mind she was a missing person" that doesn't mean others understood the situation in the same light. Unfortunately for both parties this miscommunication put the case on the wrong track from the beginning but I don't believe it was totally the polices fault as well as the fact Sally accepted the police findings a week later in a phone call. It is very hard to convince the police to re-open a case as a missing person when you have previously accept the fact that someone has chosen to be estranged.

Somebody did do some investigative work, if Sally did not supply the bank account numbers or contact details for the bank to the police, they must have done this themselves and the matter looks to have been taken seriously, the bank must have in turn run down the lead and verified Marion as the person making the withdrawals. The statement that she no longer wished to connect with her family, closes this case. If its not a missing persons case then the police did not have to sight her, it was a potential fraud case and the bank needed to be satisfied that no crime had been committed.

All a big mess really and I am sure in hindsight people would have said and done things differently, I really really want Sally to get an answer and she is the victim here but I don't like it when people don't own what they did or didn't do.

It couldn't be that she was storing her container stuff at George Yardleys or his sister in the UK ?
I can't make out enough of that letter to tell.

She's telling Sally to access the storage.

"On the plane I worried about a number of things especially school. I want you to pack up the kitchen scales + weights (?) in a box and deliver it A.S.A.P. (underlined twice) to ? ? along with a couple of things from George's storage In a blue plastic bag you'll find 2 teddy bears--with "

? ? looks like Jersey Hills or Jenny Hills--the last part of the second word obscured by red ellipse. Maybe Hilton?

The dentist was apparently Dutch that Marion met in the UK.
Yes, that’s interesting. Marion apparently loved Holland. I bet they can find this dentist, they’ve found all the other ones.
Just taking screenshots of all those phone book entries you’ve put up so I can look more closely. Wonderful and thanks for sharing

It’s in the latest podcast released today

I personally really appreciate all of you who are sharing so much from the episodes! I’m struggling to keep up with listening to them at the moment and I love that I can come on here to get up to speed.

does anyone else find it odd that the name Remakel was spelt incorrectly (Remekel) 3 times, against 3 different entries ?

from the National Archives website

Yes this IS interesting. Do you think this is just a case of the person who uploaded the records making an error? There’s no chance any of them included this spelling in the actual documents right?

My thinking is they are upload in order, maybe in batches, I have no idea how often they do an upload, but there would be a decent gap between the outgoing and incoming cards been uploaded. I assume a person enters the information ? at least in 1997 they may have ? the chances of the same person doing the entry and making the same mistake twice ?

Both actual cards had Remakel spelt correctly (by either Marion or an imposter)

If you search on the naa.gov.au website under Remakel nothing comes up, which makes me wonder if Mr F Remakel's entry (if it happened) has been over looked by the authority's if its under the incorrect spelling.

In answer to Poppycorn and your share of the postcard.
Spruce and silver birch type trees can be found both together here in East Sussex. Brede High Woods - Visiting Woods - Woodland Trust. From this I have looked at the nearest Oast Houses like Chittlebirch Oast in Cripps Corner. Here is a map of all the Oast Houses including any bed and breakfast ones. I was thinking though that the Oast House in Tunbridge Wells could be a strong possibility. The Oast House, Royal Tunbridge Wells, UK
The Oast House in Tunbridge Wells is certainly very interesting as it has the cattery and a cinema in the garage. The cinema was mentioned in lots of local newspaper articles and owned by a BBC producer so would have been a well known Oast House to stay at.

I am not sure it was a guest house in 1997 ? the below mentions it was set up as a B&B in 2018

Built in 1875 the Oast House located in Liptraps lane TN2 3AA provided hops grown locally for Kentish beer production until 1935. The Oast House was converted to a family home in 1950. The Oast House B&B was set up April 2018.

If anyone's interested, this is translation of postcard No.2 - might be a word wrong here and there - forgiveness. It sure doesn't sound like Marion's planning
on leaving the UK any time soon, she's having the time of her life and buying heaps of stuff. It's very strange - really wondering if it was Marion who returned now.

Postcard No.2 - postmark Tonbridge, 7 August 1997 (Picture of the Strand Gate at Winchelsea.)

"Sister Dear, hi, hope you and the family are well. Am having a ball. England is just the most beautiful place. So much to see, do, explore, learn, eat, and op shops galore. I say to myself, "Where's Leap?" Good bargains too. It's sad because I can't possibly carry one more thing. Talk about shop till you drop. I'm totally in my element. Beautiful gardens, weather's been fine - am wearing shorts. Delayed my orient trip till late August. First available re-booking, due to earlier rain and floods in Germany. I don't want to leave the UK just yet. Heaps of private schools - could have had a job in a local village school, relief, but not ready yet. Lovely families in old Oast houses I've stayed with, and B&B's. Met a Dutch dentist and a lady called Maz. Love you heaps, M xxxxxx"

The postcards also don't sound like Marion is needing to distance herself from her family.

i thought exactly the same thing when they read it in the podcast. sounds like someone having a good old time enjoying life and keeping in contact, hardly like someone actively planning a disappearance.

Thank you Itsapuzzle !! I cant read her writing for the life of me so really appreciate this.

I am so confused I feel like we are dealing with 2 totally different people / personalities ... are we sure it is Jane Austen she was into and not Agatha Christie !!

do you think Marion has Narcissistic personality disorder ?

  • #838
Maybe both. She did want to go on the Orient Express.
