Here's an extract from a book "

Gendarmes and the State in Nineteenth-Century Europe

By Clive Emsley
Brilliant find. When was that book published? I wonder what historical document the author was quoting from? The story is amazingly similar to RBs unless he lived a previous life?! RBs horse story about a stallion and a mare in heat is so RB. Blame the mare!! Would they even use stallions?

The latest episode of TLV brought up the relationship of Barry Cooper and Mr AKA.
Barry will have us believe he barely knew him(AKA) despite working (???) in close proximity to one another in Ballina for quite some time.
He seems to share more than a few traits with AKA IMO.
Barry’s statement to police about JO and AKA also seems to contradict information given by JO during the inquest about her relationship to Mr AKA.
I believe JO version
Barry also seems to have a close relationship with JO’S ex husband.
So many interconnected people here.
So many intersecting stories.
IMO Barry is privy to much more information from and about AKA.
Someone always knows something more don’t they??

It was strange and I can't explain it - but the way it came across at the inquest made me understand that Barry and Mike were actually in a relationship together! ??

I found BCs comment about DdH’s weight really bizarre.

didn't know if was just the way they read the statement but I agree .. I do recall one customer from that time that I knew as Ric, I recall his surname was West ... as if he could only just remember him ... but then went on with some details you wouldn't know or remember about just a "customer"

Friendship
Perhaps in cahoots with one another.
JO husband very unhappy about property settlement at the end of their relationship???

I think there's a general consensus here on WS that old mate Bazza knows quite a bit more than he's letting on. IMO he's trying his best to put distance between himself and the whole investigation but I have to wonder why. Something to hide Mr C?

Is BC a wealthy man?

I'm not sure. He apparently made a lot of money from buying & selling rare stamps in his early years.

Everyone is different. I actually enjoyed and got more out of this latest episode than most of the others lately.
I think the sound effects were a brilliant touch and were like an audible timeline.

I feel I know more about the character of the man than I did before.
I feel more hopeful now.
I’m with you, @TootsieFootsie. I appreciated the compilation told as fact. An audible timeline. The sound effects punched it up and added satirical notes like the wedding bells. After listening I now believe DdH does know all and I believe he does have, did have criminal cohorts in UK and Europe. The trips to Europe! The money he’s spent! Gambling?? Or?? Finally, it was good to hear the bookstore guy’s side of things. I found him believable but then I don’t know as much about him and RB as you all do.

So did I - why would he find it necessary to mention she was "grossly overweight"?

I suppose if it was on record that she was "grossly overweight" she wouldn't be suspected of impersonating a slim Marion would she?

It seems to be a natural thing for some people to body shame women.

I had a different take on the overweight comment. He-- don't remember his name. too many players for me-- mentioned he only saw DdH a few times then mentioned her weight. I took that to mean he only ever saw her from a distance and her weight made a visual point to him. By offering a detail, he did seem to be deflecting a bit. I might "think" that kind thing or note it, but sadly too many of the old geezers I know (shaming phrase!) reach a non-censoring point in their lives and say exactly what's in their pea brains. What I mean to say is I hear what's behind a comment like that rather than focus on its inappropriateness. He also noted the daughter -- not surprising-- and what her function was at coin shows. So maybe those of you who suspect him ARE right!

A misogynistic justification of why RB might do whatever he did with other women?

The book was first published in 1999. Clive Emsley (4 August 1944 – 5 October 2020) was a British historian and criminologist. He wrote historical books including policing in England and France.

Mr AKA would have heard stories about horse accidents while working for the Gendarmerie. But he appears to be good at collecting snippets from books as well and IMO I'm sure he plagiarised a lot orally and in written form.

This could account why the women got different stories. He hasn’t read that one yet, and once he did, he upgraded his tale?

I wonder where the purchase of all those home goods went ? The chandeliers etc? Does anyone remember the year? We’re they living in Belgium at the time or Burwash? Furnishing their home in luxury with false bank cheques?

I think the weight comment from BC was either a comment made to stop the theories of DdH posing as Marion OR a deliberate public jab at her. Who knows maybe they’ve had arguments over things in the past?

Then again, he could just be a pig. I don’t think age is an excuse. I don’t know anyone in their 70s or 80s that would describe a random woman as “grossly” overweight. Even if asked about their appearance they’d say overweight or maybe “ bigger” something a bit softer. Grossly overweight just seems nasty.

Those items were stolen in 1976 shortly after he married DdH. Some may have made their way into his home but I imagine most would be sold on for cash. I doubt they had a permanent home at that time.

As to Mr.C's comment - IMO it was very deliberate for whatever reason.
