Australia - Martin Place siege: 2 Hostages killed in Lindt Chocolate shop, Dec 2014 - #2

Who still thinks this event was primarily about religious extremism, as opposed to his 47 counts of rape and pending accessory to murder charge, etc (etc being violent psychopathy)?

Really, I'm curious.

Agree, nothing to do with religion, all to do with living out some kind macho psycho BS before going to jail for years. Whoever the judge was should be removed and sent back to deciding whether to enter convictions or not for outstanding parking fines etc. Clearly not intelligent enough to keep the community safe from dangerous offenders.

Interesting listening to a reporter sitting, waiting next to a sniper with clear view from the channel7 studio.
They both could see the gunman with iPad moving hostages around and becoming agitated. The reporter said the sniper was not at all talkative, he was concentrating of his job.

This journo said suddenly words "window 2 hostage down" and the sniper was gone. Within seconds all hell broke loose.

Wow. So it looks like when the creep started killing hostages, the authorities rushed to save as many lives as possible. It could have been worse.

Who still thinks this event was primarily about religious extremism, as opposed to his 47 counts of rape and pending accessory to murder charge, etc (etc being violent psychopathy)?

I do. Absolutely. Groups like isis and extremist leaders prey on the unstable and violent. Their messages are carefully designed to resonate with unbalanced, ticking time bombs and sociopathic monsters. They entice, coerce and command these people to carry out "the will of God" and seek vengeance on innocents. They inspire and incite the unstable and the evil. So yeah, I think it has a ton to do with religious extremism.

I think a little from column A, a little from column B, personally, after looking at his background a bit more. I think he was a psychopath and a fanatical type of personality, long before he was an extremist Muslim. So identifying with ISIS' ilk when Australia proved intolerant to his crap makes perfect sense.

I doubt he was affiliated closely with a major organised group -- they'd be claiming him by now - but I guess that'll come out, if he was.

Monis argued that Australia's policy in Afghanistan "has a significant role in jeopardising security and peace in the world especially in Australia", challenged the Prime Minister to a debate about the Afghan war and promised to support government policy if he lost the debate.

"However, if it is proven in our debate that the government's policy endangered Australia, if it is proven the government made Australia unsafe, if it is proven that Australia and Australians will be attacked, in that case I expect you to change the Australia's (sic) policy."

Monis last week praised the Islamic State group for its provision of services in Syria and Iraq – though most experts say that such services are largely used for propaganda and in fact the group predominantly terrorises local populations.

He has also claimed to be one of the "victims and witnesses of the torture by the barbaric and terrorist Australian authorities".

Mr Rudd vowed to review Australia's immigration laws after Iranian-born Monis – who arrived in Australia in 1996 as a refugee - was charged with seven counts of harassment over the letters to soldiers' families.

As recently as December 5, Monis was still fulminating on Facebook about Mr Rudd's comments, insisting it was up to God as to whether he would be deported from Australia.

Good old Ruddy. What a pity he never got the chance to review those deportation laws....

It's a shame they didn't take a shot at him when they had him in their sights early on in the siege, but it's so easy to say that now, this is just sad :(

Just last week Monis – who had more than 14,000 "likes" on social networking site Facebook - branded Australians who supported the United States and its foreign policy "racist and terrorist" on his Facebook page, which late on Monday night was taken down.

"Shame on Team Australia and shame on those racist and terrorist Australians who support the governments of America and its allies including Australia."

The Facebook page bills itself as a "counter terrorism" page and states "it is 'Team Islam' against Australian oppression and terrorism."

He went on to congratulate Muslims who had "chosen 'Team Islam'".

Thanking all the officers involved in the siege, Commissioner Scipione said: "I want to point out they have saved lives, they have saved many lives."

He said of the hostages: "I can only imagine the terror that they've been through. They are very brave people who in many cases were buying a cup of coffee and they got caught up in this dreadful affair.

"We should reflect on their courage, the courage that they displayed during the many hours in that room."

He said it was an isolated incident and urged: "Do not let this sort of incident bring about any loss of confidence of working or visiting our city.

"It was the act of an individual. This should never destroy or change the way of our life."

It was frightening to watch it live

Wasn't it just? As we went back to bed afterwards I told my husband it was the most intense and frightening thing I have ever seen on live TV.

9-11 was the single scariest thing I've ever seen.. I woke up that night, *ping* wide awake. Put the telly on, just in time to see the 2nd tower get hit. I thought it was a movie for a few minutes. I remember feeling nauseous when it dawned this was real. My household sat in front of the tv for two solid days, just in shock and horror. I'm not sure we even showered, heh.

This was a close second.

I hate -- *really hate* -- that one person, a handful of people, can do this to a nation let alone to the individuals directly affected.

Watching Sky News, yes it's an isolated incident, but it does show that no matter what we have been told by the authorities that we are not being kept safe by the courts and 'watchlists' .. if this guy was free to roam the streets, who on earth else is?
