I don't know the total outcome but Australians can certainly be proud of their law enforcement and safety services. They have been exceptional and deserve a parade. That was such a difficult hostage situation. I can only hope all hostages got out alive.

A 16-and-a-half hour siege in the Sydney CBD has turned violent, with police firing a volley of gunfire into the Martin Place cafe following what sounded like an explosion.

After police fired into the building, a second explosion-like noise could be heard.

Police were seen carrying injured hostages from the building in the wake of the incident, with and ambulance crews transporting people from the scene.

The source of the explosion-like sounds has not been confirmed at this stage.
