I rewound to watch the start again. Three women escaped shortly followed by a man. About 5 mins later another woman escaped then it looked like police were expecting something to happen. An officer fired a flash gun followed by officers throwing approx 4 grenades, followed by shots. The police wouldn't have taken this action unless there was an imminent threat to the hostages. CPR was performed on 1 person on the footpath & another on a stretcher as they were racing the patient away from the scene. My husband is an Ambo & I recognised an ex Vic Ambo officer. Makes sense as he is stationed from St Vincent's

I am heartbroken that at least one of the hostages is dead. :( A normal day, off to work with a stop for a coffee and now life is over.

Better if it's two including him.

BBC: they haven't removed gunman's body from the building.

Australian security forces on Tuesday stormed the Sydney cafe where several hostages were being held at gunpoint, in what looked like the dramatic denouement to a standoff that had dragged on for more than 16 hours.

Heavy gunfire and loud bangs rang out shortly after 2 a.m. local time (10a.m. ET on Monday), and moments earlier at least six people believed to have been held captive had managed to flee the scene.

Medics moved in and took away several injured people on stretchers, but it was not clear whether they included the gunman who had been named by a police source only minutes earlier.

Bulldust this was about religion.

This was a psychopathic rapist and horrific murderer, on his last legs of freedom for decades, spewing venom at the country who took him in when he needed us.

Clearly mad as a bucket of snakes. Violent psycho.

Police say they cannot confirm reports that two people have been killed, only that #sydneysiege is over.

One thing I'm wondering is, where is the gf he was co-accused with on the letters case, and who was accused of actually committing the murder of his ex wife he was accessory to?

"I want to take you back to the fact that there are family members who have been in this area all day .. they would have heard the shots .. they have been shown videos of their loved ones in the cafe during the day .. this must be an unspeakably horrific thing to go through" - Ch 2 News
