I tried to find out about the potential success of a landfill search, statistically as opposed to opinion.

According to the only study I could find (from North America, done in 2019) there is at least a 50% chance Lesley will be found.
Although, I think it is possible that because it has been less than 30 days since Lesley disappeared, there might be a greater chance. Seems to me that it would be a case of the sooner, the better.

A comprehensive analysis of landfill searches for human remains suggests if searchers don't start within a month of a body ending up in a landfill — and commit to spending at least as long looking — the potential for recovery drops dramatically.

"At the 30-day mark, the chances of being successful are near even, but they drop precipitously after a month has passed"

The authors of the American study, which was published in the journal Forensic Archaeology in January 2019, reviewed 46 landfill searches in the U.S. between 1999 and 2009. Of those, 20 — or 43 per cent — were successful. The successful searches took 17 days on average.

Searches that got underway within 30 days of remains being deposited were most successful, and searching for at least 30 days also increased the odds of success. Over 90 per cent of the successful recoveries happened within that "magic" window, said Paulsen.

The study discourages law enforcement from searching after two months had passed.
"There was instances of recovery after 30 days, but it was much, much rarer"

The lack of closure for the family if they don't find her too. Have there been any cases like this that have gone to inquest? I know it is early days on this and it has not been ruled homicide yet officially but if a body cannot be located, the cause of death unable to be ruled would it go to inquest in the future?

Latest Interview re Lesley Trotter on 4BC

Mentions it may be a death by misadventure.
Looking at the pictures taken at the tip I can’t see anything recognisable, just the odd bit of colour, hope she was wearing or near something bright in the truck.
Mostly everything looks brown, maybe it’s sand, or been raked to try and decompress it.

I did a search on the QLD crime map for the last month, 3 incidents are listed on the map. Unfortunately the map wont allow you to zoom right in to see an exact address and just has the hotspot to mark where the incidents occurred so it can be out a little bit. A cluster of 3 incidents. The blue hot spot appears to possibly be in a unit complex next to or 2 doors up from 58. Initially police reported 2 crime scenes had been set up.

7 Apr 2023 — “We believe her death occurred close to her unit block on Maryvale St, Toowong, and we currently have two crime scenes set up in that area.”.

I'm not sure if this could also be linked but this happened a few streets away at the end of July 22.

Very interesting interview. Even though they have mentioned that bringing in the dogs likely would not be successful, would they still not at least attempt it? This guy sounds like he has been involved in some very interesting cases.

I really hope it’s something relevant and means potentially they are close to finding all they can/need to.

From the information posted recently about rubbish dump searches, finding her so early would greatly increase the chance of collecting critical evidence. I hope it pans out.

I really hope so too. It would mean that they are definitely searching in the right place.
I notice that channel nine have also added “At this stage, it remains unclear if the items are relevant to the investigation.”

It seems inevitable that they are going to find items that are of interest to the police but not linked to this case. Hopefully there is more information on what has been found soon.

I wonder if there was a neighbour who had been doing dodgy things like cooking meth or drugs or something like that, and Lesley had seen them discarding chem or items associated with it. Then they were at risk of being caught out if she told authorities

Anything is possible at this stage

Disappointing if correct

If they found mail addressed to Lesley's unit complex or nearby ones, would that be of interest, even if it was nothing to do with Lesley.

But at least it would show they were looking in the right area.

Queensland police have confirmed that a preliminary examination of items located at a refuse site are not related to ongoing investigations into a missing 78-year-old woman.

Several "items of interest" were found on Thursday afternoon at the landfill site, which was being combed for the remains of retired teacher Lesley Trotter

Perhaps Police want to keep knowledge of those items interest to themselves at this stage ??? For purposes of the investigation ??

Easiest way is to tell the public they are not related….

Could be a possibility??
IMO

I'll bet there might be some worried people who tossed something out, never expecting the rubbish to be gone through in such detail. I suppose drugs or remnants of would be the top one, and hopefully it's not in an envelope with their name on it.

So yes, the discovery might not be about Lesley.

Why on earth would ANYTHING be released until they are certain that they are truly items of interest?
Lesley's family probably do not need this type of roller coaster. And probably should be told first, if anything is found.

Unless they are trying to spur a potential POI into some action. And, if so, did they actually leave enough time between the two different types of announcements to spur that action?
