At least four people are dead in Darwin after a gunman went on a shooting spree.

Northern Territory police duty superintendent Lee Morgan said a 45-year-old man is in custody.

“At this stage we’ve got reports of four deceased and a number of other people who have been shot,” Morgan told Guardian Australia.

An ABC reporter at the scene said the gunman entered a motel with a shotgun.

Reports said one woman was shot multiple times in the legs. Police say they do not believe there are any other suspects.

The gunman fled the scene of the shootings in the suburb of Woolner, police said, before being arrested.

According to ABC News reporter Stephanie Zillman, there are multiple crime scenes.

At least five people have been killed and others are injured after a Darwin man allegedly went on a shooting rampage across the city tonight.
Parts of Darwin were thrown into lockdown before 6pm tonight as police scoured the city to find the alleged gunman, believed to be armed with a sawn-off shotgun.

"He was wearing high-vis, we found one person in the rooms that he shot up. Scary," Mr Rose posted.
"We witnessed the man walk through the hotel shooting 10 times and then get into his truck and drive away," he wrote in another comment.
Police earlier said the suspect was described as wearing a high-vis shirt and driving a while dual-cab ute.

Police commissioner Reece Kershaw said the alleged gunman was “well known to police” and confirmed the man had been released on parole in January.

A shotgun was used, the exact type is not yet known.

Kershaw confirmed the suspect was wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet at the time.

“We’re still trying to establish the intent and the motivation behind this,” Kershaw told reporters. He said the incident was not terrorism related.

Asked if the man was a member of the Rebels motorcycle gang Kershaw said he may have associated with those entities.

Kershaw said the man may have been trying to hand himself in to police.
