Melbourne police say there is no indication this is terror-related. The driver has an extensive mental health history.

This is what police have said about the driver:

• He is a 32-year-old Australian citizen of Afghan descent
• He was known to Victoria Police
• He was not currently on bail or under any corrections orders
• He has a history of drug use and mental health issues

Patton said the alleged driver of the car was a 32-year-old man of Afghan descent who was known to police. He is not currently on bail or subject to any corrections order, but has

The driver was arrested by an off-duty police officer, who is one of the 19 people injured in the incident.

The other man who was arrested, a 24-year-old man, was not connected to the incident but was seen filming the incident and allegedly had knives in his bag, Patton said.

Police are satisfied only one person was in the car.

Acting police commissioner Shane Patton is speaking in Melbourne. He says there is no evidence the incident is connected to terrorism.

"At this time we do not have any evidence for any intelligence to indicate there is a connection with terrorism. I want to reiterate that. At this time we do not have any evidence or intelligence to indicate a connection with terrorism. Having said that, however, we continue to support this investigation without counterterrorism command to ensure that there isn’t that connection and that there is no ongoing threat."

The second man arrested had been seen filming the attack and had three knives in his bag -- although police believe he had no connection to the attack, the report said.

Witnesses say the vehicle ran through a red light and sped up outside the Flinders Street train station and sped up as it neared pedestrians.

I have read before that you can be deafened for awhile after car airbags deploy, but I don’t know much about it. I hope that the perp can talk to investigators soon so that his mental health and motives can be better understood. If he is temporarily deafened it could delay the investigation.

I believe once the investigation is complete this will be another lone wolf terrorist attack.

I am sure he will be more than willing to tell the investigators his motive since this was a deliberate act.

Having mental issues never means he couldn't have carried out this terrorist attack against totally innocent others. He doesn't have to be connected to terrorist groups for him to carry this out on his own. He was certainly mentally capable of deliberately mowing people down just like all of the other terrorists have done.

Government officials have warned Australians of the likelihood of terrorism, and Melbourne recently decided to install a public address system in the downtown area to warn of an attack, according to media reports.

Melbourne Mayor Robert Doyle said two weeks ago that the city faced the threat of an individual inspired by a foreign terrorist organization.

“That’s always going to be hard to stop, but so far our intelligence services and our police have done a magnificent job in keeping us safe,” he said in an interview published Dec. 7.

I don't know how many responses to posts I've written and deleted just on this thread tonight.... sometimes it's just best to walk away....
But, rather than respond directly to anyone, all I will say is... people will find the bits they need to fit their own rhetoric, even on this site people often refer to confirmation bias. For me, there is insufficient evidence to suggest the motives of the person who carried out this act.
I feel for the individuals and families who were impacted by what happened today, but proud of the response of the aussies running to aid the injured and make sure the guy didn't get away.

Imo, that was also domestic terrorism. This attack happened in Australia though. All of these acts are terrorism no matter how many were killed or injured. Millions of peace loving Muslims have also been killed by radical Islamic terrorists. No one has a higher body count for death and severe injuries than the Islamic terrorists around the world. IMO

Thank goodness this man in Australia wasn't in a huge airplane where he could have crashed it into a tall building possibly murdering thousands like we have seen happen before. I am also thankful he didn't use a huge semi-truck weighing tons which would have most likely resulted in mass casualties including many deaths, and severe injuries like the free world has seen recently.

Its good to see the concrete barrier stopped him or he would have gone on to maim many more than 19.

Prayers for all of the innocent people who were injured today. I hope they all recover from this deliberate evil act.

I am registered with the govt site Smart Traveller, and receive alerts from them about the countries where I travel.

Last week I received a notification from them for all Aussies to avoid being in crowds during the Christmas period, to be alert if in a crowd, to report any suspicious activity within or around a crowd.

This was a worldwide alert, including Australia.

Just wanted to share that here.
