Police will prepare a report for the coroner following the discovery of human remains near Leeman at the weekend.

On Saturday, police were advised of human remains located in an abandoned vehicle 20km south of Leeman.

According to a WA Police spokeswoman, the remains had been there for some time and a forensic examination determined the death was not suspicious.

The identity of the deceased is not been confirmed, but is believed to be a long-term missing person.

FOR Kelmscott couple John and Dolly Gallager, last week marked the sixth Christmas without their son Shayne, who mysteriously disappeared in 2003.

While Shayne’s parents still hold out hope that he will one day return, they know it is likely his remains are somewhere near Leeman, where he had been working as a crayfish boat deckhand.

Good find, Toots. Looks like a likely match, IMO. Shayne’s AFP Missing Persons register entry:

Shayne GALLAGER

Two weeks after skeletal remains were discovered in bushland in WA’s Mid West, police have formally identified the individual as a cray fisherman who had been missing for 17 years.

On Tuesday, a WA Police spokeswoman confirmed the remains had been identified as Shane Gallager saying his next of kin had been notified.

The spokeswoman said a forensic examination had concluded his death was “not suspicious” and a report would be prepared for the State coroner.

Rest in peace, Shane.

Oh dear. I wonder if it was suicide? And how long he's body had been there? All 17 years?

RIP Shane.

At least his parents have closure now.

Missing for all that time and he was only 200 miles up the coast. Sad.
