Australia - Russell Hill & Carol Clay Murdered While Camping - Wonnangatta Valley, 2020 #9

His flight attendant wife Melanie Lynn, who had attended every day of his trial, was notably absent.

As was Lynn's son Geordie, who often sat within the body of the courtroom hand-in-hand with his step mother.

They both face eviction from the family home in Caroline Springs, west of Melbourne, as police work to confiscate it due to it being linked to Lynn's crime.

So if GL lodges an appeal, I'd imagine that the family home will not be touched until the appeal has been heard & dealt with. That could take years!
I do feel for his family as they have done nothing wrong but will suffer in many ways for a long time, from his abhorrent actions.

I wonder if it will occur to GL to apologise to them?

25 members of Russell's and Carol's families were in attendance at the sentencing.

The Age article that Tootsie posted ends with .... (paraphrased) Lynn now has 24 years to have a good think about the night he changed the lives of three families.

In some other past cases where someone had died or was injured, the person or persons arrested were told by their lawyers to not say anything that could be taken as an admission of guilt.

From recollection the worst thing they could say is I'm sorry and even expressing any sympathy at all was frowned on by their lawyers.

The widow of camper Russell Hill says she's relieved the man who killed her husband has been jailed for 32 years for the murder of Carol Clay.

"We were just all over the moon when we left (court) because we couldn't wish for a better outcome," Robyn told 9News.

"He is evil because he would have had to work out all of the things to do after the event - a normal person wouldn't be able to do that."

Non parole period is 24 years.

So now I am sure the appeal process will kick in.
If I was headed to jail until I was going to be at least 80 years of age I would be appealing too. Mad not to, no matter what the circumstances. But in this instance, I doubt he'll get any traction.

Dan is trying to make a big deal out of the jury splitting the verdicts but that was offered to them as an option in unambiguous fashion by the judge. It might very well have been an 'inconvenient pathway' to Dan and the murderer Lynn but 'forbidden' as claimed by Dan, it wasn't.

I’m a total novice but I think they’re going to appeal on just about everything. Jury directions, verdict, “prosecutorial misconduct” etc and pray something sticks.

I can’t see any of it working but you never know some justice might just feel the need to bignote themselves about it and provide a decision in the abstract. Hopefully not.

Hard for the victims. When does it end.

Just to explain my absence: This was the trial I most wanted to follow this year but major health issues got in the way and both hubby and I have been in and out of hospital.

I still believe that GL intended to kill Russell. However, I’m happy with Croucher’s sentence because in Victoria, sentences for murder are usually served concurrently, unless the court directs otherwise.

Here's something you all might like to read. It’s an overview of Croucher J’s sentencing facts. It’s a very interesting read and fills in a number of gaps that we were unaware of. On a personal note, I was surprised to learn that his education started at Mt Riverview Primary School in the Blue Mountains which is just around the corner from my home and both my children attended there. I’m sure @Emirates will enjoy reading his pilot history. I think just about everything is included in this document but I'm sure you'll have your own opinions as to whether or not you agree with everything.
