I notice, too, in the article posted by slinky, that he had previous encounters with police. And had charges dropped. May have led to feelings of infallibility (along with a young person's feelings of invincibility) .... and the utter apparent carelessness with Sam's life, and the botched covering of one's own tail end.

The charges relating to a mva could have been anything, but yes maybe felt infallible but if they were off their nut or itching for their next hit they wouldn't be thinking right either.
Also, Ashley had lost a lot of close friends, not just in Kurdistan but before he left and also upon his return. Both women, one apparent suicide, after leaving a valley nihhtclub and jumping to her death and the other was beaten to death.

Enough to make you spiral further down and devalue life a bit more.
This is just my opinion.

Thank you Ms Sleuth (you know who you are) for finding her name when my memory failed me.

And we wonder why the govt does not want regular citizens going off to fight in these war zones. :sigh:

They have had none of the continuous mental and physical prep of the armed services. Have not qualified to be psychologically capable of handling the trauma or dealing with it in an appropriate manner. Nor do they have the freely given resources to help them to cope when they return, as our armed services personnel do.
Even our troops dont get properly equipped to deal with their work on deployment. Take a look at the figures of suicides and PTSD. Our EMS dont even get debriefed or councelled for the trauma they are exposed to. IMO it is disgusting.

Nor do they have the given resources to help then to cope when they return, as our armed services personnel do.

I know, right?! It's full on.

Obviously you need gallows humour to survive that kind of scene....any traumatic job requires that to an extent.....but there's no way anyone posting something like that is cool to just come back and integrate into normal, everyday life in Australia.

He would have needed a whole lot of ongoing, professional psychological support to debrief, process and integrate his experiences. Looking at where he's ended up, it doesn't sound like he got it

SO true. The same with LE.....anyone working in these traumatic fields needs psychological support. The old-school mentality of 'tough it out' or 'they'll be right' helps nobody.

We can just imagine how it is even more impossible to cope and adjust, for someone with none of the military attempts at support.

I wonder if his family got Dyball into any kind of therapy. Or maybe he was too stubborn and macho to feel that he required it. He certainly didn't come home when they travelled to Syria to try to get him to come home.

I notice they seemed to have a close relationship with the Immigration Minister, at the time. He personally sent Dyball good wishes for his 21st, and some years later publicly said that they hadn't pressed charges for Syria as he came from a good family. Maybe that is why the family were allowed to travel to Syria for their attempt to get Dyball to come home?

BBM

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton yesterday said that it was “difficult” to punish Mr Dyball because he came from a “very good family”.
“The difficulty is that, my sense is that, this is a very good family. His mum and dad obviously love him very much and it is an emotional issue, but we have to recognise that this is a theatre of war and people going off to role play in whatever side that they might see fit is just not acceptable under Australian law.”

Julia Dyball said she was proud of her son, who “didn’t even know about the laws when he left”. He would need help after witnessing beheadings and other atrocities committed by Islamic State. “He’s seen bombs put on the bottom of slippery slides ... they put bombs in blankets ... they put bombs in fridges,” she said.

Dyball had been wished a happy 21st birthday from the now Immigration Minister Peter Dutton just two years before heading overseas to fight ISIS.
“I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all the best on your 21st birthday, I sincerely hope you are able to celebrate this very special milestone with your family and friends,” Dutton wrote, the federal member for Dickson.

“Congratulations and best wishes for a happy and successful future.”

<modsnip>I know it is expensive privately but what price do you put on mental wellbeing. Also being entitled to 5 free psych sessions under Medicare would have been a start. It can be a struggle to get them there especially if they dont see their mates needing or getting help. But a majority of guys don't generally sit around talking about things like that. Hence the push for the "Black Dog".

Im sorry for your losses, Karinna. I can't even begin to imagine losing one child let alone both. I came very close last year and that was bad enough.
Thinking of all those who will always be forever young x

Thankyou Drb. Sorry you had a close call and hope all is good now. The grief journey is a difficult one, and there are many other people out there to help and it gets us through, and that they are a testimony that we can survive the worst times of our life, because they have been through it too. I was very grateful to have had such help. One thing all of it has taught me is that life here is very fragile for all of us, and there are no guarantees. I tell my surviving two boys i love them every day because we never know.

Oops sorry! Don't input often (obviously as I am techno challenged) [emoji4] but love following all your posts! Just reading an unrelated story but couldn't help but think how much it sounds like theories of ST's discussed on here! What do you think?

Thanks, Justamum!
We have a thread for the murder of Peter Milos here on WS (related to the bust in your link).
I remember discussions about this case and this suspected drug ring.
