An Australian state has offered a large reward for information after sewing needles were found in strawberries sold in supermarkets, in what the federal health minister described as a "vicious crime." The issue came to light last week when a man was taken to hospital with stomach pains after eating the fresh produce bought at a supermarket in Queensland state.

Since then, people have posted on social media photos of other strawberries with small metal pins stuck into them.

Several brands grown in Queensland have been withdrawn from supermarkets, and there have been multiple reports of other cases in the states of New South Wales and Victoria.

PETER Dutton has called on Australians to remove social media posts containing fake images of contaminated fruit as the number of cases skyrocket.The Home Affairs Minister’s plea comes as the government attempts to push through tough new laws that would see people face hefty jail sentences if caught meddling with food.

More than 25 cases of strawberries contaminated with sewing needles are being investigated across the country, but Mr Dutton said more than 100 cases of dangerous fruit had been reported.

Police in Australia are investigating more than 100 reports of needles found in fruit. They believe that there is more than one perpetrator and that some of the cases are the work of copycat offenders or hoaxes.

A 50-year-old woman has been arrested over the strawberry contamination scandal in Queensland.
Strawberries contaminated with needles were found across the country in September, sparking nationwide panic that resulted in tonnes of fruit being destroyed.

Police arrested the Caboolture woman this afternoon. She is currently in the Brisbane watch house and expected to be charged this evening. She will appear in court tomorrow and faces up to 15 years in jail if convicted.
