Australia - Shane Snellman, mummified Body Found In Deceased Hoarders House, Greenwich, 29 May 2018

Maybe evidence indicates the remains are more recent than Mr. Roberts' death?

It seems that’s one of their lines of inquiry, cb. From Morrisa’s link (above):

‘Investigators are now looking at a number of lines of investigation, including whether the person's death predates that of Mr Roberts, whether Mr Roberts was involved in his death or whether the victim had been reported as a missing person.

"We must treat the death as suspicious. It is believed the body has been in the home for a considerable time.’

Sounds like they have all the bases covered.

It looks as if our mystery man’s remains were also in the house when Mr Roberts was discovered deceased by police last year:

‘A decomposed body found in a hoarder's house in the Sydney suburb of Greenwich last week was inside the property for more than 10 years, police believe.’

‘While forensic investigations continue, senior police sources, who have characterised the case as "a mystery", say indications are that he died more than 10 years ago.

"It certainly seems to be the case," a senior police officer working on the case said. "It's correct to say that the victim has been in the house for a long time. [But] there are a lot of factors that come into the investigation, like time, temperature and so on and the forensic investigation continues."

It is understood that police have formally identified the victim, and are in the process of notifying the family of the man, who was aged in his 30s or 40s when he died.’

Police I would assume know from missing person reports when the male went missing which is why they would know the 10 year period. This will allow some closure and to say goodbye to a loved one.

Hi
Just bouncing of this one.
Yikes so when they went to get the deceased person last year the other male was dead in the lounge room also but went unnoticed. The house has been left vacant since. This story is crazy. Without being morbid who would have thought a rug thrown over could mummify a body. I think one of the articles up thread said something about an item found on or with the body let them know it was not natural. (Is that right)
Both known to each other. So I wonder if this person was missing did they go their originally to ask about person or ??

The news piece linked just above your post states that the man was never reported missing due to having been estranged from his family. In the same article, LE seems to be saying that their 10 year figure is based on a number of forensic factors.

On a different but related topic, I wonder if the condition of the corpse could have been an initial stumbling block to nailing down a time of death since it is said to have been 'mummified'. Inside a hoarder's home, wrapped up in a carpet, with stuff piled up over it-- and this Mr. Roberts apparently ran space heaters inside the structure too, further drying out the environment. TBH the place sounds like it was a tinderbox, I'm surprised it never burnt to the ground.

If a person died of natural causes it is not the responsibility of police to clean up. Most articles say Cleaners found the body. This article 'Mummified' body was in Greenwich house for more than 10 years: police says that forensic cleaners found the "mummified corpse."

As Mr Roberts was a hoarder, the place would have smelt. I wonder if that is part of the reason that the 2 dead bodies went unnoticed at different times.

No doubt. I don't like to think about being his neighbor.

The initial articles mentioned "The unidentified body of a suspected murder victim who died about a year ago had been discovered by cleaners." This changed to 10 years in later articles.
Unidentified suspected murder victim found in Sydney home

If police have been able to identify the person, who was known to them, they would have some record of the last contact. This would have been used as part of the estimation of the time of death, I assume.

My great-uncle's cabin was like that. He could have had half a dozen bodies under the stacks of magazines and boxes of old car parts.

And it did eventually burn, with him inside :(

NSW Police Force

The body discovered at a home last week in Greenwich has now been positively identified.

On Tuesday, 29 May 2018, a body was discovered at a home on Greendale Street, by cleaners after the occupant died over a year ago.

The body was taken to Glebe morgue where an autopsy was conducted.

The body was positively identified as Shane John Snellman and it is believed he sustained a number of injuries.

At this stage it is unknown when he died.

The man’s death is being treated as suspicious and officers attached to Strike Force Grimmett are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

Anyone who has information about the man’s death or his history are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

It seems the deceased Mr Roberts may have had good reason to keep a low profile:

‘A gun and an old Nokia mobile phone may unravel the mystery of how a petty criminal, whose mummified body sat in a Sydney hoarder's home for more than a decade, met his grisly end.’

‘The piles of rubbish and junk which fill the home apparently meant Mr Roberts' body was removed without anyone noticing Mr Snellman's corpse in the living room.’

‘A postmortem examination showed he had suffered a number of injuries and his death is being treated as suspicious, investigators said last week.

A gun was recovered from the property during the search and is being tested by forensic experts, AAP understands.

A mobile phone, believed to be an older model Nokia, will also be examined for clues to Mr Snellman's fate.’

It looks as if you have some of your questions answered as of today, @Horror (see my post above).

I’m sorry to hear about your Great Uncle, cb. There are quite a few older reclusive people who lived on Sydney’s Lower North Shore who have been found deceased in their residences after a period of time. A couple of years ago a block of social housing units not far from Mr Roberts’ home were badly damaged by a fire started in a hoarder’s home and fuelled by their cache. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

Yeah, it sadly happens far too often.
