Clever! Has that beach camp been thoroughly searched? Did the dogs go that far?
I believe the Volunteer dogs searched the camps at the back of Tennyson, Tommys camp and the camp in the dunes.

Running with that, what would motivate a transient person to harm Theo? If they live transiently, why not just leave the body and move on and far away?

paranoid schizophrenia?

Morning all,

The LFTH official page has released some of the OPPO R17 testings last night.

Looking for Théo Hayez
Admin · 11 hrs
We are so thankful to the generous community member who loaned us an Oppo R17 phone for a few days and for all of your wonderful suggestions in regard to testing.

We’d like to share some of our findings with you and continue the dialogue around making sense of the information. We apologise that some queries were unable to be answered due to time restraints, technical impossibilities or privacy reasons. Please feel free to ask other questions and we will answer them if we are able.

What happens when you search Wake Up! Hostel after leaving Cheeky Monkeys?

When we searched Wake Up! Hostel after leaving Cheeky Monkeys and walking along Kingsley St, the Google Maps itinerary suggested going back out to Johnson St. When we have done other (non-Oppo) searches previously, the google maps itinerary sometimes suggests travelling to Tennyson, through the YAC and out onto Lawson St. So there is some variability here.

How long does it take for the screen on the Oppo R17 to lock?
The auto screen off time varies from 15 seconds to 30 minutes. In low battery mode, the setting automatically changes to 15 seconds. We do not know what Theo’s phone was set to.

What is the battery life like on an Oppo R17?
When left unused, the battery decreased by approximately 1% per hour. With the torch on, the battery decreased by 5% per hour, regardless of whether the phone was in regular or low-battery mode. When google maps was running continuously on the screen, the battery decreased by approximately 30% per hour.

Could the phone be found with a metal detector if it was buried under the sand?
The phone could be detected to a depth of approximately 60cm under the sand, and also had cell tower reception at this level.

What happens to the phone reception when it is lowered over the cliffs at the lighthouse?
The phone was lowered over the lighthouse cliffs by drone, around 7.30am at a tide level of 1.2m. The phone had no reception on the 4G network for approximately 1-2 metres at the bottom of the cliff.
Other interesting points resulting from replication of Théo’s path:
  • When doing the same google maps search Théo did at the end of Tennyson St, then entering a waypoint for Tallow Beach, the waypoint did not appear in google activity.
  • The direction indicator and time to location indicator were clearly visible on the map at all times.
  • When searching the itinerary for Wake Up! Hostel from the end of Tennyson St, google maps indicated that this was a “flat route”.
  • When approaching Cosy Corner, google maps automatically issued a caution - “Use caution - walking directions may not always reflect real world conditions” and recommended walking west on Tallow Beach Rd towards Lawson St.

Just to clarify (not tested on R17) but an Iphone.

When I stood on the slab at Tennyson St where it was reported he seemed to pace back and forth on the slab.

I stood completely still there for couple of minutes and my location services was completely out. The blue dot also moved back and forth whilst I was till as if i was pacing. When I tried it again the dot was more accurately placed within about 2m however still had me moving around which I wasn't.

I just can’t get my head around the reasoning behind some information being shared, and other info being withheld. What have they got to lose, and what could they potentially gain through putting the lot on the table? Just don’t get it and with all due respect, and due to no explanation about the reasoning, it feels disingenuous to be honest.

Not really fair to wish for more info then complain when they release it...

True and believe me I factored that in when composing my reply. My point is, it is stalled and thumbs are twiddling and momentum is being lost. I feel that is a huge shame as there would be a lot more that could be shared yet isn’t. I just cannot understand why.

There is another approved Theo's Facebook Page entitled "General Discussion". A day or so ago a member found out about WS and was discouraged to come and peruse here because of no Verified Insider, lots opinions, ideas, no verified facts that would put them off track and so on...

Aren't they trying to divert attention of the public to cover an undergoing inquest, investigation ? Idk.

Thanks Espirtu. There’s a person posting on that TH discussion page who has satisfied my concerns about the control of released information. I think her take on this case is sound and it aligns with my thoughts (screenshots & link attached here). I think it’s just a wait for the outcome (and possible revelations) of the coronial investigation now.

Thank you Rocket333. Yes, the post you state came later than the one I was concerned about.

It's come about as a Page associated with the Looking for Theo Hayez Page.
Originally, the family decided on the Looking for Theo Hayez Group (confirmed by discussions with Chloe).
The Page was set up by a random after a suggestion was made to use a Page to put sponsored posts on Facebook. The Page has since had other admins and moderators join but I can only see one family member there. Some of the rest are ones we've seen in the media.
I don't think there's a cover-up but it seems there may be a level of control attempting to be exercised.

So this is the beach the "The Judge stick was found in Byron) seems to be becoming quite seedy.

Bushwalkers are feeling threatened and unsafe in this vicinity,' she said.

'Fires have occurred as a result of illegal campers and we do not support this at all.'

One resident said on Facebook that 'Clakes had become a a creeper hotspot' with so many illegal campers in the area.

(Please be warned the story may be considered upsetting or graphic)

I'm with Rocket on this one... we have stalled. It would be great to have some other information to sleuth on.

I wonder, how is the Private Investigator getting along? Have they have learned anything they could share to rally more support?

I have been working on routes and possible directions he may have gone after the beach.

As it was reported in final podcast there is an additional location towards town that was picked up.

I also went back recently to check out any points of interest other than the Lighthouse.

The only thing I found was Captain cook lookout which is just up from Tallow beach rd. You can also walk off the viewing platform to the beach which goes back in the direction to Wake up.

His GPS / location services stopped working just after midnight. Why? Why would he shut it off?

If it was poor signal IMO there would have been more GPS locations on and off through the morning and up until the final ping when good signal came about.

I strongly believe Theo was with someone that night.

I also sway towards him staying at a nearby holiday accommodation or property possibly with whoever he had met up with IMO.

What happened after that is anyone's guess.

I think it really does look like he was operating his phone. So I imagine he was either comfortable with where he was at the time, or he was trying to save battery.

By the way I shouldn't have said 'we have stalled', I meant the thread had stalled with the holiday season.

Kudos to you and others in the area for keeping at it.

Also for those not familiar with the area: from the Lighthouse it's relatively straightforward to walk back along the well travelled tourist path all the way back to Clarkes Beach which becomes Main Beach and then then you're back in town and close to Wake Up at Belongil. The path is a bit up and down but signposted and nothing dangerous.

But... if you're at Cosy Corner wanting to go to Wake Up then it's a much longer walk to go up to the Lighthouse and then around the cape and then back down to the beaches on the other side. You'd only do that if you wanted a long scenic walk. To just get to Wake Up without going out of your way it would be far easier (almost flat) to just go to the Tallow Beach Carpark, walk down Tallow Beach road and then you're on Lawson near Calrkes Beach. And then it's an easy well lit walk back to Wake Up through town.

Google maps puts the Tallow Beach road walk back to WU at about 50 minutes. See screenshot attached.

One interesting thing to note is that putting in CC as your location and then asking for directions to Wake Up, Google starts your path with some grey dots that take you into the bush where you're supposed to meet the end of the CC trail. See the second screenshot. So it seems that Google Maps was not telling Theo to go up to the Lighthouse and around the cape, it was telling him to go into the bush and back towards Tallow Beach road.

I wonder if this could be Theo? Police say a body was found on the coast near Coffs Harbour and they have begun an investigation to find the identity of the deceased. About 12pm (Sunday 26 January), police received reports that the body had been located on the shoreline at Safety Beach, just north of the Darkum Creek.

I would say highly unlikely Theo as it is reported a body and not human remains.

More likely this:

Search continues for missing swimmer

Or a suicide IMO

Seems to be a lot of deaths in the water up this way at the moment very sad.

Police are conducting DNA tests on two hairs found on the suspected hat of Belgian backpacker Theo Hayez, eight months after he vanished in Byron Bay.

The discovery and testing of the hairs has taken Hayez’s family by surprise, after they were previously told DNA tests on the Puma cap were inconclusive.

Byron detectives informed Hayez’s family of the hairs and new round of tests this month, it can be revealed.
