Australia Australia - Theo Hayez, 18, Belgian backpacker, Byron Bay, 31 May 2019 #4

  • #261
A couple of things post watching the show which aired tonight (Under Investigation). Mind you I agree with investigators it appears Theo sadly met with foul play. I wonder how they know the phone went ‘overland’ when it travelled a couple of hours after 1am? We know Theo’s model phone was waterproof. Is there a chance it has gone into the water and moved around the headland (based on the image they showed)? Second, remind me how they know he wasn’t with the phone at that point? Was it based on the fact it wasn’t used again?

So interesting re the ‘handshake’ with another mobile. I wonder if they have been watching someone for sometime.

Devastating for the poor family. What a wonderful young man he seemed to be.

Eerie twist in missing backpacker case

An eerie twist in the case of missing backpacker, Theo Hayez is revealed in phone data which shows he met up with a mystery local.

Startling evidence claims the 18-year-old deliberately went to a remote haunt in the international tourist resort town with the person, but then his phone was taken from him.

Poor Theo, and his family :(
I hope law enforcement follows-up full force with any new information and is truly invested in solving this.

Is anyone able to do some kind of write up please about points covered this evening on the TV Australian programme.
I tried to watch but it says that I am not in Australia so not covered in my area.

The million-dollar question is....
Why have they not followed up on so much information previously? It was clear in last nights program and hinted several times that police had not followed up on several things that the family and the PI's had handed over. It is this part of the case that truly baffles me (and saddens me for the family)

How long did Theo plan to stay at the backpacker hostel?
It is strange that the management did not give the alert until six days later.
Does this mean that he had booked for several nights and that no one was worried?
Discover here the feedback from Anna who was paying long term and who gave her opinion on this hostel:
Google Maps

Here is the opinion of Silent Entax who reveals what happens when the following residents arrive :
Google Maps

Motoki's life says: "guy died here".
Google Maps

What should we think ?
Translated onto google translator it says:

'Dude died here'

I wonder if this person makes any further comments anywhere. It looks like they have an Instagram account which also mentions Byron Bay.

Google Maps data pulled from Theo's phone revealed that instead of returning to his hostel in the centre of town he headed towards Tallow Beach and the Cape Byron lighthouse (shown in map above)

Investigators reveal backpacker Theo Hayez, 18 WASN'T alone that fateful night in Byron Bay | Daily Mail Online
''Police have always held the working theory that Theo fell from the jagged cliff face and was swept away by the sea, with one of the largest missing person's investigations in Australian history finding nothing but his baseball cap.

But private investigators working with his family, along with an army of internet sleuths, believe something more sinister happened to the talented science and mathematics student, pointing to a 'WiFi handshake' with another mobile device as proof he was not alone.'

''One of the first things Theo did after leaving the nightclub was search for the route back to the Wake Up! hostel where he was staying.

However, instead of following the directions, he walked in the opposite direction until eventually coming to a dimly-lit park and staying there for seven minutes.

It's by the cricket nets at the Byron Bay Recreational Grounds where Ken Gamble, a private investigator working with the family, believes Theo met someone.

'The only reason he would stay for close to seven minutes is because he would have been talking to someone,' he told Channel Nine's Investigations program.''

''Theo's godfather Jean-Philippe Pector explained: 'It's not a really inviting place.'

'To the contrary, it looks a bit dark. It's not frightening but you wouldn't feel really relaxed in an area like that so he may have been guided there,' he said.

From there Theo takes an inexplicable path through a narrow track in hidden bushland to the beach.

Byron Bay resident Many Nolan said it's a route only a local would know, suggesting he may have been led along the path.''

''Theo's phone activity stops just after 1am but remains on for a further 12 hours, with geolocation data indicating it moved overland around the cliff top.

'Whatever happened to him at 1am separated him from the phone,' Mr Gamble said.''

The only evidence I have heard or read so far that Theo could have gone off course and into thick bushland is his phone. No sightings, nothing concrete that is was Theo after his final whats app message from his phone. Even his hat being found is not enough evidence that it was Theo and he wasn't mugged with his hat and phone stolen. I now understand that the CCTV sighting of Theo walking near the hostel in front of the Gosamara Holiday Apartments and also in front of the Caltex Woolworths gas was ruled out. Did someone come forward to say that it was them rather than Theo?
I was unable to watch tonight's documentary as outside of Australia. Maybe my theory of Theo ending up in the Belongil Creek\Cumbebin wetlands will change after I hear about any fresh evidence. My personal theory remains that he did try to make it back to the hostel and took a wrong turning or that something foul was afoot and he got mugged nearby. There is a hidden drain at the Cumbebin wetlands so I am going to try and find out if that was ever searched.

Please read through these threads if you can, it’s a lot, but you’ll find they contain a lot of discussion, lots of links to media you may find helpful, and a lot of questions already answered.

After watching the tv show my question is: did Theo meet Thea Liddle? (Maybe with others?)

Was Thea about to speak up about what happened and therefore found dead in the same area?

I tried to watch but it says that I am not in Australia so not covered in my area.

If you want to, I think you can sign up for a (free) Ch9 account and watch it here.
I am not sure if a Ch9 account is geo-dependant, but I wouldn't think so (with so many Aussies living overseas).

Watch Under Investigation Season 2, Catch Up TV

Essentially, the most important things the show stated (that they say we haven't heard before) are:
  • Theo's phone did a handshake with another phone, after Theo was at Cosy Corner and after he had watched the little bit of the video he watched
  • Theo's phone moved around the headland - from south to north/east -before it stopped moving that night, they presume it moved around the headland over the rocks because the tower at the top of the headland didn't pick up any pings from the phone at that time (very late at night ... I think 1am-ish)
  • They think that Theo's disappearance could be linked with the disappearance of Thea Liddle months later (Thea was later found, deceased) - perhaps same perp(s)?

Thank you for filling me in with all of this SouthAussie
Anyone outside of Australia has not got the user privilege to tune into ch9. I tried to sign up incognito but that failed too.

Maybe Thea Liddle was killed as she knew too much about what happened. Then there was the conversation someone heard in a pub saying that Theo Hayez had been killed and some of his possessions where at the same house where Thea had been staying. This was checked out and they did find some of Thea's items there but not Theo's.

I am still not convinced that it was Theo moving around the headland from South to north/east.
  • What was the video Theo watched and was it something he would normally watch?
  • When Theo's hat was found in bushland was there any other DNA on the hat?.
  • His phone showed that Theo wanted to get back to the backpackers hostel so that was his intention before he went missing. The Whats app message sent to his family was coherent and does not seem to show that he was totally intoxicated.
  • Are detectives going to check handshakes/other mobile phone data in the area at the time.

They seemed to think that Thea's disappearance and death was theft related, and seemed to think that may be the case for Theo as well.

The video Theo watched was the intro for a show he always watched. Theo's dad said he would have only watched the intro, due to the length of time he watched it for.

They didn't speak of any other DNA on Theo's hat. It is possible/probable that they don't know.

Theo googled his way back to the hostel one more time, at Cosy Corner (or just a little way up the hill from Cosy Corner). Google showed him that he needed to go up the hill - towards the lighthouse.

They don't know if police will check (or have checked) the tower for other mobiles in the area at the same time as Theo.

The people who were involved in the show were not police ... they were the PI (Ken Gamble), a mobile technology expert, Theo's dad, a Byron local (Maureen) who is heavily invested in finding Theo, and Theo's cousin.

Mandy Nolan was on the panel too.

Oh sorry ... I might have got the name wrong. I thought it was Maureen, but it was probably Mandy - a blond haired lady. (I don't know who she is, other than a local who is committed to finding what happened to Theo.)

Thank you everyone for clarifying the new information. The fact that Theo listened to a video he was familiar with and had again logged into his phone does make it sound like him up to that point. A stolen phone would probably need to be unlocked by a specialist so any person mugging him could not have gone into his youtube account or whatever he was using.

The episode is now available for overseas viewing:

Yes, they think that Theo was in control of his phone until after the video, the handshake with the other phone, and the final look at Google to see his way to the hostel.
Then he/someone went into the phone settings and turned off location services. The rest of the data that has been discovered (after that) is due to the fact that other apps on Theo's phone retained their own location services ability.
